I have no idea what the hell they are talking about, between the BNP and Putney and Oxfordshire, but I am loving the BBC coverage of the UK elections. There really ought to be a channel where we can watch election results from all over the world 24/7.

I would always vote for Plaid Cymru if I could.

From the still of the YouTube video, I was half expecting an Austin Powers dance. Liberal Democrats, Oh, behave!
Hah! After clicking on the video, looks like I called it.
Well done, sir. Well, done.

Love the Monster Loony party candidates.

HorseRaceTV, maybe?
I think I’ll pass, but I see what you’re saying. I would also like to see a channel like that, in some universe where a channel like that could a.) exist, and b.) not instantly turn into a dog’s breakfast featuring daily soapbox commentary by surrus historian Newt Gingrich.

And BTW, how late am I to the “Goddamn I hate this Wal-Mart gift card audio advertisement” party? Did anybody save me some punch?

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs (rowr!). You heard their two albums of covers? Excellent.
Somehow every girl I dated in high school looked like Susanna Hoffs. At least when I closed my eyes.

+ Refusing to sign up to the euro, but inviting the rest of Europe to join the £ pound
+ Drivers can go straight over a roundabout when there’s no traffic coming “to make driving through Milton Keynes more fun”
+ Traffic cops “too stupid” for normal police work to be retrained as vicars
+ Withdrawal of MPs’ £118,000 expenses allowance, and the money “in future be distributed to the poor and needy so that they can waste it instead”
+ Any MP whose constituency sells off a school playing field for development will be required to relinquish their own back garden as a replacement sports facility for the school
+ All motorways to become massive cycle tracks instead
+ All speed cameras will be abolished and replaced by a new device fitted to cars which will automatically slow down to the speed limit when driven though an infra-red beam
+ The introduction of a 99p coin to “save on change”
+ Banning semi-colons; no-one knows how to use them
+ Banning vaccinations, to be replaced by nurses with shot guns to hide around playgrounds
To be honest, I’m rather pro-semi-colon; I can get behind the rest of the platform, though.

I’ve been listening to the BBC political coverage for the past hour, just to follow the results for my favorite British candidate – Tarquin Fintimlinbinwhinbimlim Bus Stop F’tang F’tang Ole Biscuit-Barrel (Silly Party).

@MikeJ: Yeah they have some catchy stuff, I heard the first one and was impressed. Matthew Sweet, talk about a whirlwind of a career, he went from being the total bad-ass of the universe critically and popularly to almost totally obscure in about three years time. I saw him live at a sold-out concert at Chastain Park in Atlanta during his 100% Fun tour, thought he was great. Three years later I just happened to catch him playing the Northside Tavern for about thirty people. I was a semi-pro musician myself in those days, and seeing “here today, gone tomorrow” in real life like that scared the frickafrack out of me. But it’s good to see that he has soldiered on; he always did have some of the best backup players in the world behind him.

Damn, lost the intro to that list whilst editing. Anyway, it’s the Monster Raving Loony Platform.

Jason Bylinowski:
I don’t know about totally obscure. Girlfriend is a classic, especially with all that guitar work from Robert Quine (Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Lou Reed) and Richard Lloyd (Television), plus the Fred Maher production which separates the guitar parts into separate channels.
If anyone wants to criticize Sweet’s career, he can always come back with, “Hey, I fucking recorded Girlfriend , what the fuck have you done?”

@JGabriel: Anyone who’s lived Europe for a while starts to understand that they just copied most of those from reality.
I love my friends in the UK and I used to live there, but all you have to do is get off the train in London to realize that Monty Python was a documentary.
AhabTRuler
@JGabriel: Yeah, Girlfriend is the one song of his that I have. I tried the album that it’s off of, but I just couldn’t hack it. Strangely enough, the SO thinks I’m a pussy for liking it, but I just try to convince her about the guitar work.

Two from Matthew Sweet:
Evangeline (Quine on left channel)
Girlfriend (Live in Studio, 2000)
She’s some kind of angel if you know what I mean – Evangeline.

@Jason Bylinowski:
That ad has burned me once a day at work to the point where I don’t give a shit any more. In defense of Cole, he probably doesn’t have editorial control over individual ads, just the company that provides them. And like he says, they pay the bills that cover the bandwidth. Whatever it takes, AFAIAC.
But yeah, even I agree, Waaaah about the fucking walmart ad.

Jason Bylinowski
@JGabriel: Well yeah I agree with you, Girlfriend is for sure one of the best of the 90s and you’re right that Robert Quine was a madman, maybe only surpassed (in my mind at least) by the world-class Lyle Workman, who played for Frank Black before he started playing country-rock or whatever the hell he is up to nowadays. But at least in terms of the zeitgeist or whatever the hip term is, Matthew Sweet’s star was really short-lived.
ChockFullO'Nuts
I dunno, I watched some of that BBC coverage on C-SPAN earlier and it looked like something out of a 1968 Jane Fonda movie, with campy overblown graphics and a color scheme on the set that was certainly 60s science fiction movie.
And a reporter prancing around in front of the graphics and talking about them as if the graphics were the actual election.
Bizarre doesn’t even begin to describe it. All it needed was some odd tuneless music and maybe a dwarf in an alien costume.
AhabTRuler
Ladies and gentlemen, the part of Ed Balls will tonight be played by Michael Palin.

@ChockFullO’Nuts:
And that’s bad?

@Ty Lookwell: I’m more interested in the ongoing antics of Kevin Phillps Bong. Of the Slightly Silly Party.
ChockFullO'Nuts
@DougJ:
Not at all. I love those old Jane Fonda movies.
However, the mere suggestion of her appearance in anything now makes me want to strap on a rocket belt and blast the hell out of there.
