I did not want to vote for Romney. But I did not want to vote for Santorum or Gingrich or Paul. Choosing between them has been like choosing the tallest midget. I have been left uninspired for various reasons by each.

So I went with Rick Perry. Consider it a protest vote. But at least, unlike many, I went with who I liked as opposed to voting for someone to be against someone else or some other strategic pattern of voting…
Erickson’s man-crush on Perry just may have something to do with Erickson’s recent bell-ringing for upscaling the GOP-friendly War on (Some) Drugs:

And the media rarely reports the extent of the violence or that it is spilling over into the United States. These are not acts of crime so much as acts of terror. They are escalating. Neither Republicans nor Democrats have a plan to help Mexico in this war.

Look again at the article. It has no author. Why? Because the reporter is in danger of losing his life. He must be kept anonymous. But this local reporter is willing to report and keep reporting. It is not something national reporters have yet started doing. I wonder if they are scared or just do not get how bad it is and will become.

The only other very obvious explanation is that this war does not fit into some sort of media narrative to make it newsworthy. It’s Mexicans killing Mexicans and the occasional Texan. Surely that’s not why the media is ignoring it. Do they not care about Mexicans and Texans?

Clear and Present Danger
Tom Clancy wrote a novel about a President writing an Executive Order finding there was a “clear and present danger” to the security of the united States posed by the Drug cartels in COLUMBIA. I would like SOMEBODY in DC to grow a set and set up a series of clandestine NSA listening posts, and Special Forces outposts along the border, and when the NSA is able to identify a center of activity, that night a black helicopter would make a crossing of the border below radar and then next morning there would be an apparent new battle between the cartels, and cause the fighting between the bad actors to escalate. If somehow it leaked, it would be demonstrable that their was PLENTY of precedent, the Mexican American War, Blackjack Pershing going into Mexico after Pancho Villa (who did much less than what the Cartels have done). The amount of attrition the professional troops could inflict upon the criminal element (in a foreign country, I’m NOT suggesting violating Posse Committatus, or using them WITHIN the US) SHOULD be sufficient to allow the Mexican authorities to regain control of their own country.
It seems to me that Mr. Erickson has been discouraged in further pursuit of legal remedy against those snotty little Iranian gas station attendants who (he is convinced) are deliberately overcharging him (and don’t get him started about the whole ‘self-service’ insult, these people used to be grateful for Erickson’s business!) So he’s decided to turn his attention to hectoring the Home Owners Association to enforce the rules where the landscapers are supposed to leave their crummy pickups and garishly-painted commercial vans outside the gates, dammit. STANDARDS, people!

or maybe we should consider legalizing and regulating drugs instead of waging an ineffectual war for the last four decades. Despite the cash thrown at this issue, does anyone believe that folks that choose to light up or shoot up can’t? We have functional addicts all over the place but we simply choose to not recognize the fact that they walk amongst us (along with the sluts and teh ghey). Hell, make it regulated, tax the living crap out of it (like we do with booze and tobacco). Do the same thing with sex. It would likely help put a big kabosh on STD’s and sex related crimes. I’m tired of the preachers and the pastors attempting to set our moral compasses while building megachurches that are more devoted to Mammon than Christ or diddling little boys in the name of the holy spirit.
Maybe I am completely lacking a moral compass here or perhaps I am standing on an ethical precipice but I am damned tired of seeing the pious hypocrites attempting to legislate morality and I would welcome a different approach.

South America has already taken care of ridding itself of the dictators we installed by themselves. This was one of the biggest developments on the planet in the late 1990s and early 2000s — South America arguably becoming politically and economically independent for the first time since pre-Columbian times.
However, since they have overwhelmingly elected liberal to left governments since then, then obviously this means they’re all dictators.
Also, it’s entirely Mexico’s fault that we provide a gigantic consumer market for billions and billions of dollars worth of a product against which no amount of US military aid has proven effective.

@piratedan: I don’t think many folks here are opposed to the idea of legalizing drugs and prostitution. I’m all for it. I think it is long overdue and would be a great improvement over the status quo. I do think people here get put off when someone decides that we all shouldn’t vote for Obama because he isn’t championing this idea and by extension we should all rally behind Ron Paul.
Ideally, I strongly support and hope for the eventual legalization of drugs and prostitution, and someday it just may happen. Practically I don’t expect or demand it from this president at this time.

His point about the terrible toll the drug war in Mexico has caused is corret. As for the cherry picked comments, wacko’s are the norm at red state. As one person pointed out, we are the driving force for all the drug issues in SA and we should stop turning our country into a war zone with a police force that is waging war on us.
