So I missed wishing everybody a Happy first night of Chanukah, but commentor J. at J-Two-O gives me a chance to rectify my oversight…

As an animist, and a progressive, I believe in celebrating every possible festival of lights. The Neopagan calendar’s four cross-quarter festivals are Imbolc (candles), Beltane (bonfires), Lammas (hearthfires) and Samhain (lanterns). Those of you who follow other traditions are gonna have to send me emails (click my name near the top of the right-hand column) to bring me up to speed, though… I know there must be some wonderful Diwali YTs…

As an alternative for the grinches militant atheists among us, Mozilla is sponsoring a red panda webcam at the Knoxville Zoo (h/t Gawker).
If red panda cubs can’t improve your mood, well… got any suggestions?

Gawker (Gizmodo) told me about this, and later let me know that it did indeed reach Walter C. May’s girlfriend…. virally. Comments seem to be split between snark about linking ‘viral’ and ‘girlfriend’, and the suspicion that the whole thing is just another marketing ploy. As an Old Person, the thought of being tracked-via-proxy seems a little more Stalker than Romantic, but on the other hand, it’s a pleasant little ditty, isn’t it?

Since I am not a Straussian: By commentor request, I plan to post an “Artists In Our Midst” thread this evening, for everyone’s holiday-shopping convenience. If you or your loved ones have art or craftwork to sell, get your links lined up, and be ready to put them in the comments.
Meanwhile, a little solstice-themed music to get you in the right mood (for avoiding the mall):

Oh, Mary, this London’s a wonderful sight;
There’s people here working by day and by night;
They don’t sow potatoes, nor barley, nor wheat
But there’s gangs of them digging for gold in the street.
At least, when I asked them, that’s what I was told,
So I just took a hand at this digging for gold;
But for all that I’ve found there, I might as well be
In the place where the dark Mourne sweeps down to the sea…

I’m down to a handful of pet stories and pictures, after the bounty everyone sent me back in August/September. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to share your tales, please email me at [email protected] (or click on the link near the top of the right-hand column), and don’t forget to include the pseudonym (nic) you use here on Balloon-Juice!

As half the populace gears up to travel cross-country and the other half prepares for their visits, many thanks to commentor Republic of Stupidity for news of the latest snark against security theatre:
(Available from Skreened.)
I think it would coordinate nicely with a bold, manly kilt… ABC News reports that “Some women may be asked to remove their skirts in a private screening area, and they will be given a towel or gown to put on”, but they don’t specify whether this also applies to lads wi’oot trews.
And for your late-night listening pleasure, an upbeat little ditty for “faint-hearted [or ‘unwary’] travellers”:
