Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

John Richardson has made excellent use of the internet to add some extra notes he gathered while researching “Newt Gingrich: The Indispensable Republican” to his Esquire blog. I’m not going to quote much here, because you don’t want to read this stuff over breakfast (or just before you go to bed). But here’s a teaser from Mickey Edwards, a former Congressman so conservative he was one of the original trustees of the Heritage Foundation:

[Newt] was the one who really more than anybody got Republicans to start thinking of themselves not in terms of their constitutional obligations, but thinking of themselves first as Republicans. The classic example of when this came back to haunt us is when George Bush became president and started doing these things that were unconstitutional, like his signing statements. Republicans rallied to support him. My whole life has been in the conservative movement, and if Lyndon Johnson did those things we would have had a mass protest. But they went along with it because he was their leader. That’s the fruit of what Newt brought.

Sorry for Being So Cranky

by John Cole|  August 11, 20107:37 pm| 161 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Looking over the last couple of posts I’ve written and participated in, I realize I’ve been a bit of a jerk the past few days. Sorry. Got a lot to do, it is hot as hell, my battery was dead in the car this morning because I left a domelight on, I need a root canal, it is becoming pretty clear the economy is screwed for a decade and we are going to be bombing Iran soon and there is nothing we can do about it, and Rosie is driving ME INSANE with her constant need for attention. I actually crated her for a time out this afternoon so I could get some work done.

This did make me laugh, though:

John: maybe you should institute a color coded system like Homeland Security had. You could post it on the top of your homepage and give us liberals a quick way to judge whether we’ve stepped over any lines.

Green: John Cole is Serene. Liberals are quietly accepting whatever shit comes their way.

Yellow: John Cole is Aggravated. Liberals are grumbling about quality of shit forced to eat.

Orange: John Cole is Ticked. Liberals won’t hush up and let me get back to pruning my tomatoes.

Red: John Cole is Goddamned Mad. Liberals are risking losing my support. Or maybe I’ll just hold my breath until I turn blue. Stop it you mouthy Liberals.

I should never have gone to peaceful, blissful Madison. Maybe I should just go back.

*** Update ***

On the other hand, I have not completely lost my shit like this guy:

Police in Buffalo arrested 51-year-old Gary L. Korkuc after they pulled him over for blowing through a stop sign, and found four-year-old Navarro marinating in his trunk in a mixture of oil, crushed red peppers, chili pepper and salt. Spicy! So why would Korkuc want to eat his cat? According to a memo from the staff at the local SPCA, obtained by the Buffalo News, Korkuc said he no longer wanted Navarro because the cat was “possessive, greedy and wasteful.” He told police that Navarro was mean to him. The memo added, “Do not under any circumstances adopt to this man ever again.” Yeah, that’s probably a good idea. Navarro has already been adopted by a family, and his new name is Oliver.

WTF….

*** Update #2 ***

Not even going to go into the specifics of this McMegan post about retirement, I’ll leave that for the professionals, but I will let you all savor this typo for all ages:

I spent a lot of years trying to spread the bounty of my pubic sector.

Found it concrete, left it marble

The CountertopBoating (or is it SwiftCountertopping?) of that Palin protester continues at Gateway Pundit (via). During the Frost debacle, after it was revealed that the countertops were concrete, not granite, we were told that was even worse since concrete is more expensive than granite. If it had been alleged that they were marble, we would have learned that concrete is more expensive than marble too. This time, we will likely learn that teaching Theater Tech is worse than singing in a drag band, since Theater Tech teachers earn more than drag band singers, at least in Alaska.

But that’s not the point of this post. The point of this post is to ask why winger bloggers like to call themselves “pundit”; you’ve got Allahpundit, Gateway Pundit, Vodka Pundit. Why?

Open Thread: “A Sort of Missouri Compromise for Our Times”

by Anne Laurie|  August 11, 201010:17 am| 82 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Republican Stupidity, Assholes

Harold Meyerson at the Washington Post takes a lead from our own Dennis G:

… On this page last week, my colleague E.J. Dionne Jr. rightly noted that by attacking the [14th] amendment, Republicans seek to undo one of their party’s greatest and most inclusionary achievements. Civil War- and Reconstruction-era Republicans took pains to ensure the citizenship not only of freed slaves and their children. They — in particular, Abraham Lincoln — also decided not to permanently keep millions of Confederate soldiers and sympathizers from regaining their citizenship.
__
The Confederates had renounced all allegiance to the United States. They made war on the United States — the Constitution’s definition of treason — and, in an effort to keep 4 million Americans enslaved, killed more of our soldiers than any foreign army ever did. Yet Lincoln was determined to make it easy for Confederates to regain their citizenship. By taking an oath to support the United States and its Constitution, Confederates were made Americans again.
__
Suppose, though, that Lincoln had been filled with the spirit of today’s Republicans. The crimes that Republicans ascribe to today’s illegal immigrants pale next to those of Confederate leaders and supporters (chiefly, treason). A Lindsey Graham-like Lincoln would never have let the Confederates regain citizenship. Moreover, he would have denied citizenship to their children and their children’s children. A large share of the nation, certainly of the white South, would have drifted endlessly in a legal limbo. The current Republican Party, anchored as it is in the white South, would scarcely exist.
__
So, the question for Lindsey Graham is: Are you serious about revoking the citizenship of 4 million children, their children and their children’s children? How about a package deal: Stripping their citizenship in return for stripping the citizenship of Confederate descendants. A sort of Missouri Compromise for our times. Bipartisanship in action.
