Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Republicans do not trust women.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Fight them, without becoming them!

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Early Morning Open Thread

Many thanks to JeffreyW for linking to this morning’s Moment of Zen:

The mechanics of hovering had been explained to me, but I’d never realized how much these little guys would look like swimmers treading water…

For those who were impressed, and moved, by the Esquire profile of Roger Ebert, he will be debuting his “own” computer voice on Oprah today:

A company called CereProc has taken voice samples from Ebert’s DVD commentaries and created a computerized voice that Ebert can use to “speak.” This could even lead to Ebert using the voice for other media, including podcasts, video, and commentaries.

And finally, in my best “following the circus parade with a push-broom” style, I would greatly appreciate it if any of the more tech-savvy Balloon Juicers can tell me whether I should worry that my reaction to the NYTimes article “Striving to Map the Shape-Shifting Net”

In a dimly lit chamber festooned with wires and hidden in one of California’s largest data centers, Tim Pozar is changing the shape of the Internet. He is using what Internet engineers refer to as a “meet-me room.”… What Mr. Pozar does there is to informally wire together the networks of different businesses that want to freely share their Internet traffic.
__
The practice is known as peering, and it goes back to the earliest days of the Internet… Originally, the companies that owned the backbone of the Internet shared traffic. In recent years, however, the practice has increased to the point where some researchers who study the way global networks are put together believe that peering is changing the fundamental shape of the Internet, with serious consequences for its stability and security. Others see the vast increase in traffic staying within a structure that has remained essentially the same.

… is a heartfelt, “And this should mean something to me… because?”

This post is in: An Unexamined Scandal, Getting The Band Back Together, Open Threads, Good News For Conservatives

As I’ve mentioned before it seems that all of Jack Abramoff’s old scandal buddies are getting back into the game. Patrick Pizzella, Dick Armey, Matt Kibbe and others are running the Tea Bagger movement from their puppet master perches on K Street and the Avenues of power inside the DC beltway. JD Hayworth, Richard Pombo and others are running for office again.

Could Jack’s core cadre of grifters be far behind. Of course not.

The word has leaked out that Ralph Reed is getting ready to run for Congress in Georgia. Micheal Scherer at Time has more details.

Reed is a creation of Abramoff. Jack plucked the young plagiarist from Georgia decades ago and set him up in DC. The grifters have been working together ever since. Reed’s greed for payoffs became so intense that at one point Abramoff and fellow co-conspirator Micheal Scanlon were complaining about Ralph.

Jack told Mike:

He is a bad version of us!

And then there is that system of human trafficking, forced abortions and force prostitution in the Western Pacific that Ralph, Jack and the gang protected in exchange for cash. I hope the FSM gives these weasels what they deserve when their number comes up.

But things are what they are and so: yes, of course Reed will run for Congress. He’ll tell the rubes he is a “Christian” and the fools will support this grifter with an ice cream face. The only good thing one could say about Congressman Reed is that you could file an ethics complaint against him the moment he is sworn in.

Regardless of the drawbacks, I’m sure this is good news for John McCain.

Cheers

Speaking Of Health Care

DougJ is right, the Senate has (apparently) resolved their differences (for now) and Pelosi has the ball again. If that’s true then you may still have a chance to help push this thing over the line. Do you know where your Congressperson stands on HCR? Phone and ask. We especially need calls from readers whose House Member belongs to the Congressional Progressive Caucus or the blue dogs. Any single Congressperson on the fence can swing the vote one way or the other. Whether it’s about abortion or a strong public option, wavering congresscritters take a small shot of courage from each supportive phone call.

Switchboard: (202) 224-3121.

Guide for first-timers here.

Anyone else watching this bizarre closing ceremony?

And apparently, Canada is the home of giant beavers. There are jokes a plenty to be made with that one.

I know the answer, but…

This post is in: Movies, Open Threads, Good News For Conservatives, Mainstream Media's McCain Mancrush

I still have to wonder how the Sunday shows could not find a moment to mention that Senator Jim Bunning is obstructing 1.2 million Americans from getting unemployment benefits just to be a dick. One would have thought that this might merit a comment somewhere. On ABC there was ample time to discuss the departure of the White House Party Planner, but not the real world impact of obstructionism on so many people’s lives. I guess important ‘journalists’ can’t be bothered with things like news when catty Georgetown gossip is at hand.

It might have been a good question to ask Gramps McCain as he guest hosted another one of these shows, but it didn’t happen. (I think it was on the Network that has a funny show on Thursday night, but he is on so many of these Sunday shows it is hard to tell which network will toss the old fella softballs on any given weekend).

Yes, I already know why. And yet, I thought I would ask the question regardless of that.

I recently watched “The Most Dangerous Man in America“, a documentary film in theatres these days. It is the story of Daniel Ellsberg and the release of the Pentagon Papers. It is pretty amazing film and reminds one that there was a time–not so long ago–when people actually practiced journalism in America.

Now we just get MC Rove’s back-up dancers.

***sigh***

Feel free to treat this as an open thread.

Cheers
