Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

We will not go back.

The lights are all blinking red.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Giving up is unforgivable.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

This chaos was totally avoidable.

In my day, never was longer.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Stand up, dammit!

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

The Inner Geek Appears Again

So I am watching the premiere of Farscape in order to get the background before trying the series, and I had a thought I had never had before regarding science-fiction and the concept of time. The characters kept using ‘alien’ units of time, and it occurred to me that I have never really contemplated how they quantify time in this sort of show.

We all know how we measure time, and here are a few alternatives, but how do most science fiction shows treat time? How would yuou measure time if you were a fiction writer? Is a reconceptualization of how time is measured and treated be an integral part of any science fiction?

Ceviche

by John Cole|  June 17, 20057:09 pm| 8 Comments

In case you are wondering, the ceviche came out great. I used:

Sea scallops
Shrimp
Red Snapper
Mango
Peach
Green and Red pepper
Jalapeno
Roma tomatoes
Limes
Lemons
Cilantro
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

I whipped it all up, let it cook in the fridge all afternoon, and placed in a bowl lined with greens and topped with sliced avocado.

And I washed it down with Laphroiag.

It was as tasty as it was pretty. If I don’t post tomorrow, it is because I have dropped dead from food poisoning.

Fictional Books Fiction Choices

Ted Barlow has his list of books up from the book survey.

Michele’s can be found here, Kimmitt’s can be found here, and my list is here. I have given up on the others- they just won’t play.

And Gary Farber has decided to be coy and won’t pare his list down below 100 books.

Michael Demmons has his list here.

The Truth Laid Bear has a brand new design, and it is great. I really like the communities feature, and I am a member of the RINOS, along with Dean, Michele, Der Kommisar, Andy, Chris, and many others I need to check out.

Well done, Bear.

The Tv Tome (like the IMDB but for television) seems to be under new management.

Also- have any of you ever made ceviche at home? Tips, cautions, and recipes would be appreciated.

What Can 30 Hornets Do?

This streaming video of what happens when 30 hornets find a bee colony is just, well, cool. Put this in IMAX, please.

BTW- Loved the helicoptor sound effects- would it have been too over the top to have the Ride of the Valkyries playing in the background, ala Apocalypse Now?
