Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

“They all knew.”

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Abuse Update

Another soldier convicted:

An Army Reserve private faces up to 16 years in military prison when he is sentenced for beating one of two Afghan detainees who later died.

A military jury found Pfc. Willie Brand guilty on Wednesday of assault, maltreatment, false official swearing and maiming. It acquitted him of similar charges involving the second man. His sentencing hearing begins Thursday.

Brand, an Ohio reservist with the 337th Military Police Company, was accused of repeatedly beating the two detainees while working as a guard at a detention center at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan in December 2002 and then lying about it. The detainees died later that month.

The conviction was for abuse of a prisoner known as Dilawar. An Air Force medical examiner had testified the man was injured so severely that his leg muscles were split apart. Homicide charges were dropped earlier this year.

As the verdict was read, Brand, 26, wiped tears from his face. His attorney, John P. Galligan, said the conviction will be appealed.

”When you send a man who has been to war back with a conviction, that’s punishment enough,” Galligan said.

Military prosecutors did not comment afterward. They had asked the jury of four enlisted soldiers and three officers to reject Brand’s claim that he just did what he was told and taught.

”It’s an excuse that comes up when you are caught,” 1st Lt. David Trainor said. ”He was not confused about it (his orders); he lied about it.”

I just find it hard to believe this is just a few rogue soldiers acting up. There is more to this.

More Able Danger

More on the Able Danger saga in the NY Post today:

A veteran Army intelligence officer said yesterday the elite military intelligence unit known as Able Danger might have been able to prevent the 9/11 attacks — if it had been allowed to alert the FBI that Mohamed Atta was living in the country.

“My first reaction was, ‘We had him.’ It was a sinking feeling in my stomach,” Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer told The Post in an interview yesterday, describing how he felt after learning that Atta was one of the hijackers.

Shaffer said that before the attacks, in 2000, Able Danger used complex computer analysis to identify two of the 9/11 terror cells, including one centered around the mastermind, Atta.

But Pentagon lawyers wouldn’t let them sound the alarm with law enforcement agencies, he said.

“I believe there was a potential — had the information been passed from Special Operations Command to the FBI — that our information may have been one of the keys, if not the key, to pull together and make sense of the data they already had,” Shaffer said.

Read the whole thing- I don’t know where this is going.

Renew America- To the Stone Ages

by John Cole|  August 18, 20054:29 pm| 29 Comments

Renew America has up yet another in their unending series of articles attempting to legitimize intelligent design as ‘science.’ Nothing really noteworthy, other than this picture, which gave me a good giggle:

Heh. I guess the final paragraphs were also worth a chuckle:

Like the theory of evolution, intelligent design science has links to a philosophy, namely the philosophy of Deism and natural law. However, intelligent design science is protected from corruption by its careful adherence to the empirical disciplines of Francis Bacon.

In conclusion, whether one believes in evolution or intelligent design science, one is obliged to consider that at present, the intelligent designers are operating at a higher level of integrity than the evolution establishment.

Not only are those evolutionists wrong, but they don’t have the integrity to admit it! Thank goodness for the Onion:

Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New ‘Intelligent Falling’ Theory

KANSAS CITY, KS—As the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools continues, a new controversy over the science curriculum arose Monday in this embattled Midwestern state. Scientists from the Evangelical Center For Faith-Based Reasoning are now asserting that the long-held “theory of gravity” is flawed, and they have responded to it with a new theory of Intelligent Falling.

“Things fall not because they are acted upon by some gravitational force, but because a higher intelligence, ‘God’ if you will, is pushing them down,” said Gabriel Burdett, who holds degrees in education, applied Scripture, and physics from Oral Roberts University.

Burdett added: “Gravity—which is taught to our children as a law—is founded on great gaps in understanding. The laws predict the mutual force between all bodies of mass, but they cannot explain that force. Isaac Newton himself said, ‘I suspect that my theories may all depend upon a force for which philosophers have searched all of nature in vain.’ Of course, he is alluding to a higher power.”

Founded in 1987, the ECFR is the world’s leading institution of evangelical physics, a branch of physics based on literal interpretation of the Bible.

That is worth two chuckles and one chortle.

Partisan Hackery

I understand the folks at Daily Kos aren’t big Bush boosters. I get that they aren’t fans. I have figured out they don’t like them. But this sort of nonsense is just preposterous:

Bush can’t meet with Cindy. Not anymore. It would be seen as a surrender. But he could’ve spoken out against this desecration.

But he didn’t. Of course.

The idea that because Bush did not speak out about some yahoo who ran his truck through a bunch of crosses, he is somehow awful, is petty, silly, and one of the reasons it is often hard to take Kos seriously.

This Should Be Interesting

Via the always interesting Don Surber, the news that WV Sen. candidate Hiram Lewis will be on Hardball tonight:

Hiram Lewis, Iraqi war vet and candidate for US Senate (R-WV), is expected to be on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews Thursday evening, August 18th, around 7:30 p.m. “We are unsure of the exact time, but we expect it to air sometime during Thursday evening’s show,” Lewis said.

Chris Matthews has been interviewing Iraqi war vets interested in serving in Congress. “I watched Chris tear into Patrick Murphy (D-PA) yesterday. I felt sorry for the guy,” Lewis said. “Hopefully, Chris will take it easy on me.”

Lewis continues to support the war effort in Iraq even though polls show weakening support. “We must finish the work we started. We must have the resolve to see it through,” Lewis said.

“If the anti-war crowd has an alternative plan, let’s hear it. Let’s have the debate. If not, then support the troops in the current mission or volunteer to participate in the execution of the current mission. Attempting to sway public opinion against the war, does nothing but encourage the terrorists to kill more soldiers and lower our morale.”

That will be a lively show…

Live and Let Die

Pierce Brosnan is no longer Bond:

A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That’s how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

“One phone call, that’s all it took!” the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

“You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond,” says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time GoldenEye premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002).

Personally, I thought he was a great Bond. Connery was still the best, though. Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton were abominations.
