Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

How stupid are these people?

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Celebrate the fucking wins.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Tick tock motherfuckers!

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

The lights are all blinking red.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Accountability, motherfuckers.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Please, Just Go Away

It seems the “Big Me” wants Congress to change an amendment or two (surprisingly, it isn’t the 2nd):

Former President Bill Clinton said on Wednesday Congress should change the rule that barred him from seeking a third term in the White House, but stopped short of saying he wants to return as commander-in-chief.

Speaking at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum here, Clinton questioned certain aspects of the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prevents a person from being elected president more than twice.

Readers of fiction and fantasy enthusiasts will be pleased about this news:

Clinton said he was writing his memoirs, which were due to be published in the autumn of 2004, although he said they may be out before then.

The Beginning of a Groundswell?

by John Cole|  May 28, 20037:15 pm| 7 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

Yesterday, Gary Farber, Matt Yglesias, and I all wrote about the Congo and the wholesale slaughter that is taking place, and Gary today re-states the challenge Nick Kristoff issued yesterday:

Have you blogged on the issue today? Written a politician to ask that the US (or your government) get the UN to act, and contribute troops and logistics? Called a talk radio show? Done anything at all?

Have you? I see that Jonah Goldberg has mentioned the issue his piece for Townhall. As bloggers and average citizens, we won’t decide the actual policy. But by writing about it, talking to our friends, and doing the simple things Gary has suggested, we can keep the issue alive, and slowly but surely it will bubble to the top of the public conscience. And then, maybe, hopefully, our government will do something about it. Members of the mainstream media may not read me, but they are reading someone I am linked to- I can guarantee that. They are reading someone you are linked to. Keep the issue alive. Write about it. It really is that simple.

The Clinton Wars

This post is in: General Stupidity

Why is everyone picking on poor Sidney Blumenthal, who is clearly telling the truth in his new tome? I mean, everyone is either lying about him or questioning his integrity and honesty. The list of liars include:

Ronald Brownstein: Ultimately [Blumenthal] is too much the believer to be believed.”

John Giuffo: The last thing Clinton White House strategist Sidney Blumenthal’s groin-pull of a hagiography can be called is objective.

Michael Isikoff: Sid Blumenthal rearranges facts and besmirches the character of his fellow journalists. And he wonders why people dislike him.

Christopher Hitchens: In his new book Sidney Blumenthal presents a disconcertingly cynical yet naive account of the Clinton years

Joseph Lelyveld: Out of all this turmoil, high aspiration, low comedy, and misspent passion, a certified writer who had achieved a little distance and perspective might have been able to fashion a memorable book. His dual status as a courtier would hardly have been a disqualification. But any thought that a Duc de Saint-Simon might have been lurking in the Versailles of the Clinton White House is soon dispelled as one endures the vertiginous experience of reliving our last president’s operatic ups and downs through this massive volume.

Dick Morris: For those who haven

Goodbye, Saint Patrick

Like him or not, you can not deny his greatness:

Colorado’s Patrick Roy is retiring, ending the 18-year career of one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. Patrick Roy didn’t leave with another Cup, but he will retire with the most NHL victories.

Roy will make the announcement at a 2 p.m. ET news conference Wednesday, team spokesman Jean Martineau said.

A four-time Stanley Cup champion, Roy is the NHL’s career leader in victories with 551 and games played with 1,029. He also is the career leader in playoff victories, games played and shutouts.
