Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“But what about the lurkers?”

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

This post is in: Election 2008, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?

FacebookTweetEmail

Seems this shin-dig is starting promptly at five pm. I am watching on C-Span for now, because I simply can not take any more babble from the pinheads.

5:27 pm: Ok. This is boring as hell, so I will talk about something else for a bit. About the ‘Greek Columns’ nonsense that the blogosphere seems consumed with today- have people simply not learned? Sure, the Obama campaign probably thought they were just using something nondescript that every fucking building in DC has, and thought it wouldn’t cause a problem, but what people fail to remember is that no matter what they did, the wingnuts and their surrogates would have a field day no matter what.

You really don’t have to read folks like Tom Maguire for too long (and I have been reading him for years) to realize that no matter what the backdrop was, he and others would be mocking it. If it were nothing but American flags, Tom and others would claim he is really over-doing the patriotism because he knows he is weak on the issue. If it were just a normal stage with a few flags, Tom and others would claim it seems like he is afraid of overdoing the flags because the left-wing base hates America and would be turned off. Heads they win, tails you lose.

So it is Greek columns in the background, and Tom and others are mocking it. I am shocked by this turn of events.

5:35 pm: This is really boring as hell.

5:36 pm: A republican turncoat is nominating Obama. There are a lot of us, bro.

5:38 pm: This Republican is nervous as hell. Also understandable. All those Democrats under one roof staring down at him? YIKES. Or maybe he is picking out the 72 virgins Soros promised him.

6:01 pm: Ok, this is actually kind of fun listening to them all add their own little spiel before voting. I think I was just hungry and crabby earlier. I wonder what the GOP Alaskan delegation will be saying during their roll call vote.

6:09 pm: The Hawaiian delegation was the best looking so far. Well, one part of the Hawaiian delegation.

6:20: The Louisiana delegation looks like the most fun to party with. I bet that woman makes a mean ass gumbo.

6:28pm: Pretty clearly, this will never make it to WV unless they do some passing and shuffling, which kind of sucks, because I might know some of the delegates. On the other hand, this state is going GOP again in 2008, so I guess there is no point giving us face time.

6:37 pm: I am doubling down on my bet from yesterday. After Hillary’s speech last night and after listening to former Clinton advisors Begala and Carville lament the lack of economic talk, I am betting that Bill Clinton unleashes holy hell tonight and rips the stuffings out of the GOP. Why? Because he can, and he misses it. Even if the reports are true that he doesn’t like Obama, I bet he gets up there and unloads, because no matter how much he does not like Obama, he hates Republicans more. Anyone want to bet? Going even farther, I bet there will be at least one point when he wags his finger and tells the people what the Republicans are saying and says “Don’t you fall for it.”

6:48 pm: And it is done. Obama is the nominee. Hillary moves to end the proceedings, and once again I don’t know how she does it. She actually looks like she is over it, and I don’t know how. There is no doubt she is a trouper.

6:54 pm: Love Train was an interesting choice.

7:01 pm: C-Span really is the way to go.

I’m torn between watching C-Span to view the convention as it SHOULD mostly be presented by the MSM (analysis after speakers)
…and watching CNN/MSNBC to see what most of the portion of the general public who are watching the convention (instead of ignoring it for something else) are seeing and hearing.

QUERY: Is it fortunate or is it unfortunate for the dems that the majority of people who will actually watch part of the democratic convention will likely only tune in to hear Barack Obama’s address tomorrow night, rather than any substantial portion of the rest of this week, given how stupendously awful most of the available MSM convention coverage has been?

The Obama-speech set appears to resemble the Lincoln Memorial, for reasons that — for most sentient people and maybe one or two McCain staffers — should not be difficult to surmise.

I guess Obama should land at Invesco Field in an Air Force fighter jet, get out in a flight suit and declare the election over. That way, the Republicans couldn’t paint him as presumptuous.

Then again, they probably still would.

    John,

There was a Diary over at the GOS pointing out that the columns may just be part of the stage “skeleton” since the whole thing isn’t set up yet. Also the ones on the sides seem to be for holding giant televisions. But I guess it’s the reason d’jour to wet ones pants over by some people.

Is it fortunate or is it unfortunate for the …

    fortunate.

most of the speakers are bad at delivering their horribly boring and content-free speeches.

and, they should really put the big names up at 9:00 or so.

Why would you consider the nominating process boring? This is the part that may prove the most interesting. Granted, it’s not filled with music and lights and fanfare, but, it’s the hard work that needs to be done, and there IS controversy attached to this current nomination so sparks may fly (not that I’m hoping to see that personally).

Jesus, John, can you go yell at Sullivan for a bit? Do you He’s been in hysterics today about how everything is going to hell and the democrats are committing suicide and Obama has lost the last four weeks. What’s wrong with that guy that makes him so apoplectic?

I mean, for christ’s sake about the columns. George Bush used columns too.

I know this convention is super boring, but what do you think the Republican convention is going to be? Excitement city? It will probably just a bunch of old people boringly taunting Obama and trying to make lemonade out of the shit pile they’ve landed us in after 8 years.

He would be dressed in a toga and wearing a laurel wreath, just like Caeser in his triumph through the streets of Rome. The path before him would be covered with rose petals and trumpets would blare. Then Heffner’s Girls Next Door would escort him to the stage. (NOTE: By this point eight percent of the PUMAs would have dropped dead from a stroke, as would a significant number of other people in the McCain demographic. Might improve our chances just a bit).

what do you think the Republican convention is going to be? Excitement city?

I expect it to be very tightly managed and choreographed. Their 2004 convention was instructive. They had scripted audience laugh lines, chanting. I felt the Kerry convention was more free-wheeling and genuine, but the Bush convention was tight, on message and had more impact. When I saw it, it was the first time I had doubts about Kerry’s chances.

So yes, I expect the Republicans this year to have the attack dogs and dynamic speakers out 100% of the time, and the media will eat it up. While we play make-up (do you think the Rs will have to spend an entire night talking their supporters down from the ledge?) and listen to snoozefests like Warner’s speech and interesting but non-dynamic speeches like Pelosi’s and generally kind of muddle through.

But we still have Biden, Clinton and Obama to go and maybe the Rs will suddenly forget how to craft a ridiculously simplistic yet effective message.

Personally, if you’re a Clinton supporter who is going to vote Green because Obama’s not progressive enough for you, I can see that. I don’t share the opinion, but it makes sense.
