Mission Accomplished!

by John Cole|  March 16, 200811:34 am| 52 Comments

This post is in: Military, War, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

From the NY Times:

The Baiji refinery, with its distillation towers rising against the Hamrin Mountains, may be the most important industrial site in the Sunni Arab-dominated regions of Iraq. On a good day, 500 tanker trucks will leave the refinery filled with fuel with a street value of $10 million.

The sea of oil under Iraq is supposed to rebuild the nation, then make it prosper. But at least one-third, and possibly much more, of the fuel from Iraq’s largest refinery here is diverted to the black market, according to American military officials. Tankers are hijacked, drivers are bribed, papers are forged and meters are manipulated — and some of the earnings go to insurgents who are still killing more than 100 Iraqis a week.

“It’s the money pit of the insurgency,” said Capt. Joe Da Silva, who commands several platoons stationed at the refinery.

They did say the war would pay for itself.

Just A Quick Question

Andrew Ferguson has a piece on Barack Obama at the Weekly Standard titled the Wit and Wisdom of Barack Obama. I have to admit that in my current narcotic induced haze, I did not read the piece. I do, however, have a question:

Is it appropriate for the magazine that has delicately and lovingly fondled George Bush’s scrotum for eight years to ponder about the wit and wisdom of anything other than a tree stump?

So my ear got unbearable last night and I went to the emergency room, and I had a real learning experience:

Never go to the emergency room in a college town over St. Patrick’s weekend.

I think I was possibly the only patient not vomiting green beer. At any rate, they inserted a wick in my ear, gave me some painkillers (finally) and some strong drops and oral penicillin, and even though I didn’t get home until 4 am, I already feel better.

I hate going to the emergency room, especially when I had just been to the doctor Thursday morning, but this had to be done. I was in agony and getting worse. In my lifetime, I have been through the windshield of a car and bit a molar in half, exposing the nerves and suffering for two days with an exposed nerve so the swelling could go down before they fixed it . I have fallen off a tank, breaking my collar bone and 4 ribs. I have broken any number of fingers (every finger has been broken at least twice), dropped a wooden bench on my big toe breaking it, and suffered several concussions. I have even been hit in the testicles so hard by a lacrosse ball during a game that it broke my cup. I have had all of those injuries and many more.

And all of that paled in comparison to the pain of my ear ache as it progressively got worse yesterday. It was all consuming. It throbbed, it burned, there were flashes of pain streaking from my inner ear down my neck and into my shoulder. It gurgled, and sloshed, and ached some more. My jaw was sore from trying to equalize the pressure. The entire outer ear area and my jaw was swelling. It was awful. I was seriously near tears, and it was not so much just the pain, but that I could not think about anything else. Every thought, every second the ear pulsed, was how MUCH MY DAMNED EAR HURT.

At any rate, I got a few hours sleep, and already my ear feels better. The miracle of modern pharmaceuticals. Hopefully this will be well on the way to clearing up before I go to the ENT specialist on Monday or Tuesday.

Consider this an open thread.

Sinking Ship

It’s official! Cap’n Ed has sailed a little farther into Wingnutistan to join the rest on the sinking ship that is Hot Air. What a shame. Agree with him or not, there was a time when Ed Morrissey’s ideas were well thought out and rational. On the upside, Captain’s Quarters is one less link we’ll have to click for our daily dose of the heebie jeebies!

Yet Another Sign of the Apocalypse

by John Cole|  March 15, 20086:10 pm| 52 Comments

This post is in: Popular Culture, War on Terror aka GSAVE®, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

This:

UCLA Medical Center is taking steps to fire at least 13 employees and has suspended at least six others for snooping in the confidential medical records of pop star Britney Spears during her recent hospitalization in its psychiatric unit, a person familiar with the matter said Friday.

In addition, six physicians face discipline for peeking at her computerized records, the person said.

Questioned about the breaches, officials acknowledged that it was not the first time UCLA had disciplined workers for looking at Spears’ records. Several were caught prying into records after Spears gave birth to her first son, Sean Preston, in September 2005 at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital, officials said. Some were fired.

That is thirteen more people than have been disciplined at the FBI and other collective agencies for their transgressions. If the UCLA Medical Center ran like the Bush administration, some flack would have been dispatched to say that “there had been some mistakes, but they have all been fixed now, so trust us” and that no, you are not allowed to find out what exactly happened.

Gail Collins Doesn’t Get It

by John Cole|  March 15, 20081:15 pm| 88 Comments

This post is in: Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Gail Collins has some solid snark today:

This is not the first time Bush’s attempts to calm our fears redoubled our nightmares. His first speech after 9/11 — that two-minute job on the Air Force base — was so stilted that the entire country felt like heading for the nearest fallout shelter. After Katrina, of course, it took forever to pry him out of Crawford, and then he more or less read a laundry list of Goods Being Shipped to the Flood Zone and delivered some brief assurances that things would work out.

O.K., so he’s not good at first-day response. Or second. Third can be a problem, too. But this economic crisis has been going on for months, and all the president could come up with sounded as if it had been composed for a Rotary Club and then delivered by a guy who had never read it before.

That is all well and good, and amusing, no doubt, but it is clear Gail Collins doesn’t get it. Bush and the Bush administration really aren’t going to do anything- they aren’t big on governing. This last eight years hasn’t been about governing, it has been little more than the world’s boldest snatch and grab. The people who bear the burden for a large portion of the current financial crisis made their money and are off the hook, and have moved on to more important things. Like raking in tons of cash on oil futures. Or lobbying against the inheritance tax. Or trying to get the tax cuts permanent despite the several hundred billion dollar deficits we are running.

So while Gail Collins may say some amusing things, she clearly doesn’t get it. I can’t blame her, though. It took me a while to figure it out, myself.

*** Update ***

Apparently, I am clear on the concept, but not clear on the lingo. The phrase is smash and grab, not snatch and grab.

I Agree With The DKOS

This post is in: Election 2008, Media, Republican Stupidity, Assholes

Now that we are perusing every sermon given by Pastor Wright in an attempt to bury Obama, is it ok to hear some of Huckabee’s sermons? Pretty please?

Is it still un-American to talk about Mitt Romney’s funny underpants? Anyone? I just need to keep up to date on the rules, here.
