Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Wait, what?

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

“They all knew.”

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Come on, man.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Good For Them

by John Cole|  March 15, 200811:22 am| 16 Comments

This post is in: Politics, War on Terror aka GSAVE®, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

They showed some spine for once:

After its first secret session in a quarter-century, the House on Friday rejected retroactive immunity for the phone companies that took part in the National Security Agency’s program of eavesdropping without warrants, and it voted to place tighter restrictions on the government’s wiretapping powers.

The decision, by a largely party line vote of 213 to 197, is one of the few instances when Democrats have been willing to buck the White House on a matter of national security. It also ensures that the monthslong battle over the government’s wiretapping powers will drag on for at least a few more weeks — and possibly much longer.

It has been repeatedly demonstrated that Bush is simply lying about the impact this has on our security, and it is nice to see the Democrats stand up to him.

I’m in Florida, and I thought the bit of rain we got last night was bad weather. Good thing I wasn’t in Atlanta.

This is just over a mile from my house. Even closer to my place, a row of historic homes was flattened! Fortunately, my house is ok – just a bit of trash up and down the street. Nothing compared to what others have to deal with.

Wingnut Logic

This post is in: I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

These people are killing me. Allahpundit, on Obama’s rejection of Wright’s “offensive” remarks:

That’s a nice, lawyerly dodge. Is he suggesting that in 20 years’ time he never heard Wright say anything along these lines? Or is he merely suggesting that he was never personally in attendance when Wright said it, as if that would matter remotely to his decision to stay with the church once he heard about it secondhand? Note how he limits the scope of the matter, too, to only the statements Fox and ABC discovered in going through tapes of Wright’s sermons. That’s not the issue; the issue is whether Wright has a habit of spitting poison like this and whether Obama was happy enough to let him do it so long as there weren’t political consequences. If the media starts going through old sermons week by week, with new and ever more nuanced conspiracy theories emerging periodically, is he going to roll out weekly statements to the effect of, “Nope, never personally heard him say that, or that, or that either”?

No, you douchebag, he is stating he condemns the remarks in question and doesn’t always agree with his pastor. I heard my cab driver say “nigger” a month ago. I guess that means I am racist, right?

These stupid fucking wankers are driving me insane. I guess now we need to sift through the political views of everyone’s minister and find out if they are acceptable and “patriotic” enough for the Allahpundit.

PS- There is no such thing as god, you fairy tale believing morons.

PPS- Can you jackasses stop pretending he is Muslim now that you are denouncing his Christian minister?

*** Update ***

Reliably, yet given the high bar for stupidity set by Allahpundit, somewhat unbelievably, Dan Riehl ups the ante:

Also, if that’s the case and Obama is a disciple of Wrights, exactly what type of change does Obama have in mind when it comes to race relations in America? The church also celebrates Kwanzaa. I wonder, is this something Obama intends to continue if he’s elected president? His holiday cards are pretty generic … for a committed Christian.

ZOMG, if Barack HUSSEIN Obama is elected President the Holiday cards might be generic. That is it. I am switching my vote to Hitlery, whose Christmas cards will certainly be full of Christian flair.

Is this like EdTV or that other movie where a man’s life was filmed without his knowledge? Am I secretly being filmed as I am driven into madness by these morons? Is that what is going on? Someone please make it stop.

*** Update #2 ***

Not to be outdone in the rightwing blogosphere push for total lunacy, the Confederate Wanker (via Tbogg) chimes in:

Not only am I certain Barack Obama is unfit to run this nation, I now question his ability to raise his own children, for the hatred he has willingly exposed them to since their births.

If there is a bigger set of douchebags on the internet than Dan Riehl and Bob Owens, I am afraid to read them.

Who exactly is the near left? Joe Lieberman I guess, but is there anybody else? The wingnut spectrum seems like a very weird place.

Earache My Eye

Thank you for all the lovely suggestions regarding the earache. I especially appreciated the suggestion that I put a bullet in my ear. I passed on that one.

My prescription drops finally showed up at Walgreens this morning, and I think I can tell a difference. The pain still sucks, and I can not hear out of it very well, but hopefully it will be better in a day or two. I also picked up a heating pad and some Tylenol, but I really hate taking over the counter medicines because I know how bad they are for you. However, my daily 81mg aspirin was not cutting it.

I think the worst thing about this ear infection has been every time I have seen/said/read the word earache, I am reminded of this:

Try being in pain for 24 hours with that song running through your head.

The Republican Strategy

This post is in: I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

Is to say so many stupid and offensive things that they just wear me down and I give up and start drinking. Today’s installment, courtesy of Mona Charen:

I am coming to believe that Barack Obama is one of the greatest con artists we’ve seen. His entire campaign has been about “coming together,” a post-racial consensus, etc. Any mention of his middle name was immediately condemned as ignorant fear-mongering. He has played the role of racial unifier with great skill and finesse.

But there is a great deal of evidence out there that he is anything but. The Reverend Wright is exhibit A. Mrs. Obama is Exhibit B. But there’s lots more.

***

My own theory, FWIW, is that Obama acquired his far left views at least in part to make himself as authentically black as he could to compensate for having a white mother. His mother, of course, was very left herself. But looking the way he does, and having been raised among only white people (mother and maternal grandparents) he felt the need to better identify with his black heritage.

FWIW, if you combine the names Mona and Charen and replace one vowel you come up with the word Moran.

Why Does He Hate America

by John Cole|  March 14, 20089:03 am| 38 Comments

This post is in: Military, War

God-General Petraeus clearly has Bush Derangement Syndrome as he assaults the troops with this nasty smear:

Iraqi leaders have failed to take advantage of a reduction in violence to make adequate progress toward resolving their political differences, Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said Thursday.

Petraeus, who is preparing to testify to Congress next month on the Iraq war, said in an interview that “no one” in the U.S. and Iraqi governments “feels that there has been sufficient progress by any means in the area of national reconciliation,” or in the provision of basic public services.

Why does he want us to fail in Iraq? I think he needs another Friedman Unit of surge to bring back his patriotic zeal, because right now he sounds like one of those leftards at Daily Kos, or even worse, Juan Cole. I sure hope our brave patriots in the right-wing blogosphere expose Petraeus for the America hater that he is.

I hear he has brass countertops.
