Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“They all knew.”

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

This fight is for everything.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Everybody saw this coming.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Bad Ideas

by Tim F|  March 10, 20089:18 pm| 32 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing, Democratic Stupidity

The blogosphere is practically bursting with bright, novel perspectives. Here’s Ezra Klein, for example, on the Spitzer news.

This is sort of the boring take on Spitzer, but what we’re seeing here is not the fall — if indeed he does fall — of a high-flying governor. It’s the final tumble of a crushed reformer. Spitzer, for reasons both structural and personal, has been utterly humbled by Albany. The new capitalism he promised, the age of transparency he spoke of, the national ambitions he harbored — all have broken before the obstacles he faced in the governor’s mansion. When you think of the hype he was getting only a couple years ago, that’s a rather remarkable fact. I don’t care about the prostitution. But the capacity of the system to stand against those who would reform it, and who come into office with a broad mandate to do so, is really quite sobering.

Then again, on any given day some don’t make the cut.

Bill Kristol. Steve Benen lingers on Kristol’s silly idea that Clarence Thomas in the VP slot would hardly help McCain’s campaign (more evidence, by the way, that the GOP is freaking out over tearing down a black guy), but that’s peanuts. If you think that the activist right hates McCain now, picture for a minute how they will react when McCain pulls a rock-solid GOP vote-o-matic off the Supreme Court under a Democratic Senate. Heh. If McCain was even toying with the idea he would have voted in February to outlaw waterboarding.

Jacki Schechner. Here is a bit of electoral math – if Obama runs as an independent there will be two Democrats against one Republican. In a presidential election that means that the Republican wins. Cognoscenti call it “splitting the vote.” I didn’t set out to give Aravosis a hard time for hiring one of CNN’s blogreaders but yeesh, pointless noodling like this is why I can’t bear listening to political pundits on the teevee*.

Buried in a story on CNN about the presence of a number of pharmaceuticals in our tap water is this little nugget:

A sex hormone was detected in the drinking water of San Francisco, California.

Hrmm. The LIEBERALS ARE SPREADING TEH GAY!.

Clinton Yanks Spitzer Endorsement Faster Than A Hooker Yanks… Well, You Get It

LOL. Apparently the website has already been scrubbed of Spitzer references.

Speaking of things that amuse me, last night I couldn’t sleep and was watching Revenge of the Nerds on HBO. For some reason, perhaps because I am 37 years old going on 12, the scene where Takashi is working the locker room for the football team and Ted McGinley’s character asks him if he knows karate always cracks me up. I am sure one of you can find that scene on youtube, but I can’t.

Consider this an open thread.

Sully:

The best book on the Clintons remains “Primary Colors,” Joe Klein’s masterpiece. The movie wasn’t bad either. This clip shows the Clintons pondering whether to use some vile, underhand dirt on a political opponent. Except, of course, they don’t ponder. For them there is never any moral pondering. They do and say what is in their best interests, period – and they have no idea how to behave otherwise. It’s all excused by their unquestioned faith in their own benevolence. And the least ethical of the two – the most shameless, the least principled, the hollowest form of political life … is Hillary.

New rule: You aren’t allowed to use fiction to determine that Hillary is evil and should not be President. I really don’t think that is too out of line.

Who Does He Think He Is?

Elliot Spitzer’s remarks:

“Good afternoon.

“For the past nine years, eight years as attorney general, and one as governor, I have tried to uphold a vision of progressive politics that would rebuild New York and create opportunity for all. We sought to bring real change to New York and that will continue.

“Today I want to briefly address a private matter. I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong. I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public, whom I promised better.

“I do not believe that politics in the long run is about individuals. It is about ideas, the public good, and doing what is best for the state of New York. But I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself. I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.

“I will not be taking questions. Thank you very much. I will report back to you in short order. Thank you very much.”

Who the hell does he think he is? Like Tim, I think prostitution should be legal, but really, who does this jackass think he is? He has spent his career aggressively prosecuting individuals, then holding elaborate press conferences in which he pompously attempts to seek not only justice, but to shame people, humiliate them and ruin them.

And now, we find out that he is no better. In other words, just another pompous moralizing hypocrite who thinks everyone else should live by rules he can’t, only this time he has a (D) after his name instead of an (R). Spitzer needs to resign, and he needs to resign now. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass.

*** Update ***

On the upside, remember this?

It takes a truly twisted perspective to see a man who commits private sins while arguing in public for virtue, and choose to take issue with the latter.

So, two cheers for the hypocrites. Even if they don’t do right by themselves or their families – even if, at times, they deserve to be punished by the law or defeated at the polls – they should still be proud to have done the right thing in their time in public service.

It should be fun watching Red State leap to the defense of this hypocrite. I mean, after all, he was fighting the good fight, amirite?

Speaking Of Purity

by Tim F|  March 10, 20081:28 pm| 129 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

New York governor Eliot Spitzer, not so pure.

Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

We can assume that Spitzer got that announcement out just ahead of a story in the works somewhere. No word yet on whether Spitzer will share David Vitter’s terrible fate.

***Update***

As for my own feelings, just as I say in every other prostitution scandal it seems to me that illegal prostitution is a stupid policy for any number of reasons. Routine health inspections would improve public health, chasing johns wastes police resources and local governments could use the tax money. But as long as prostitution is illegal, the people who make and execute laws have a particular responsibility to behave themselves. Since illicit prostitution also provides a tempting basis for blackmail, it seems like a perfectly reasonable basis for an ethics investigation.

In fact, vigorously investigating government officials who frequent prostitutes might be the best possible route to legalizing the practice and taxing it. Whether we get more honest lawmakers or fewer stupid laws, forcing government officials to follow the law always pays dividends in the end.

***Update 2***

It was brave stands like this that established Spitzer’s reputation.

Sad.
