Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Books are my comfort food!

Republicans in disarray!

In after Baud. Damn.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

The willow is too close to the house.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Stay strong, because they are weak.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

How Low Can It Go?

This is a stock market open thread. I hope someone’s enjoying the ride. I’m certainly not. I’ve lost $6,900 from my 401(k) since December, and I imagine those of you who have been living in and saving in the US for a lot longer than me are doing even worse. On the other hand, your next 401(k) contribution will probably buy a lot more.

So, how will the $140 billion stimulus package stimulate the economy? Beats the shit outta me. All I know is that it’ll probably have to be borrowed from China. And what about the rate cut? The Fed lowered it this morning by three-quarters of a point.

Have a fun day. Stock futures are already down over 500 points.

Too funny for words.

I would just add that European neo-fascist groups accusing American Islamophobes of creeping leftism because they don’t also hate Jews probably won’t show up as a data point in the next edition of Jonah Goldberg’s book.

Oliver Stone is making a new movie:

According to Daily Variety, Stone is in the process of developing a script about the current president that he hopes will hit theatres in time for the general election next fall.

And he’s tapped Josh Brolin — most recently of “No Country for Old Men” to play the commander in chief.

As far as the Giants/packers, I am rooting for the Packers. While the Giants are a classy organization, I have always rooted for Green bay in the NFC, and how can you not root for Favre.

As far as the patriots/Chargers, I am indifferent. Nothing good can from the game. Either the Patriots win, which for obvious reasons is bad, or they lose and I have to spend the next month listening to meathead former NFL announcers say things like “That is why they play the game,” then we get to spend the next six months psycho-analyzing why the Patriots did not win. As you can see, neither is a desirable outcome.
