Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Fight them, without becoming them!

We still have time to mess this up!

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Come on, man.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Republicans do not trust women.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

How stupid are these people?

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Salsa Verde Update

by John Cole|  March 15, 20095:07 pm| 69 Comments

This post is in: Food

Not sure if this would still be considered salsa verde, but here is what I did:

couple pounds of tomatillos
two onions
dozen or so serrano peppers
couple habaneros
couple cloves of garlic
a metric ton of cilantro
some kosher salt
a couple limes

I took out the cast iron skillet, as suggested in the comments, and slow roasted the peppers, the garlic, the tomatillos, and the onions. I browned them a little bit more than all the online guides said to, but I was hoping that would make it a little smokier. I then seeded the peppers, peeled the garlic, and threw it all in the food processor. I then squeezed a couple limes, added some salt, and then when it tasted a little empty, added a teaspoon of sugar to round it out a touch.

It turned out to taste pretty damned good, with a smokier and hotter taste than the salsa verde I am used to buying at the store. I am not sure if I like the habanero taste in this, but it did heat it up a little bit. I added the habanero because I am a firm believer that if I am not sweating and have to blow my nose after a couple bites of something, it is not hot enough, but I am not sure if that was the right pepper to add. Don’t get me wrong- it is good. But I am not sure if it is as good as it could be. Can’t wait for my chicken breasts to stop marinating, and then it is game on.

So what did I do wrong, or what should I do differently next time?

An Even Simpler Guide To The Goldberg Theorem

by Tim F|  March 15, 20093:35 pm| 20 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

When the market goes up, it’s good for Republicans. When the market goes down it’s bad for Democrats.

***

This only tangentially relates to Goldberg’s Categorical Imperative, which states that the only quality which can be considered unequivocally good is a misunderstood cartoon version of Reagan.

A Handy Guide To Understanding the Goldberg Theorem

Steve Benen:

Just so we’re clear, here’s a helpful guide to the rules of market watching, as they relate to partisan politics:

When the market went down on Bush’s watch before the 2008 elections, this was Bill Clinton’s fault.

When the market went down on Bush’s watch between November 2008 and January 2009, this was Barack Obama’s fault.

When the market went down during Obama’s first seven weeks in office, this was definitely Barack Obama’s fault.

And when the market rallies on Obama’s watch during the second week in March, George W. Bush deserves at least some of the credit.

That is helpful.

Collateral Damage

by John Cole|  March 15, 200912:35 pm| 48 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Politics

At the end of this WaPo piece, readers might learn what the Chas Freeman issue was really all about:

Caroline Glick, a columnist in the Jerusalem Post specializing in national security issues, had a different take. She described what she called “disturbing things about the climate in Washington these days.” The foremost was that Blair’s choice of Freeman, despite what she said were the latter’s known “extreme views on Israel and American Jews,” may indicate something about the DNI. She said Blair’s testimony last week to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Iran’s nuclear program showed that “America’s top intelligence officer is willing to take Iran’s word on everything,” and, “On the other hand, he isn’t willing to take Israel’s word on anything.”

In the immediate aftermath of the Freeman exit, Andy McCarthy helped set the stage:

Great. But there remains the fact that the top intelligence official in the U.S., Dennis Blair, brought Freeman in, figuring he’d be a perfect fit to head the National Intelligence Council. Freeman is gone, but Blair will be with us for years to come. The problems with Freeman were far from hidden. What is it about Blair’s worldview that inspired him to think Freeman was a good choice to be shaping intelligence estimates and framing the information consumed by the president?

And showing his typical deft touch, here is Michael Goldfarb bringing it all home in his own subtle manner:

Blair has been badly damaged by his appointment and subsequent defense of Chas Freeman, both of which showed incredibly poor political judgment if nothing else. Now Blair is claiming that the Iranians aren’t actually working on building a bomb, in line with the “consensus view” of the 2007 NIE — the worst NIE since the 2002 NIE that said Saddam was sitting on a stockpile of biological and chemical weapons. If there is no intervention, Iran is likely to have a nuclear capacity before the end of Obama’s term. It will be a spectacular intelligence failure — on par with the missing Iraqi weapons of mass destruction — if Iran goes nuclear while the American IC is still insisting they have “not yet made the decision to do so.”

Freeman wasn’t the real target. Blair was and is, and I expect once intelligence estimates come out that upset the Weekly Standard and the ownership of the New Republic and others, the whisper campaigns will begin and we will “learn” how Dennis Blair secretly has had it in for Tibet for years. Why, insiders will tell us that he once was overheard saying “To hell with the Dalai Lama.”

It Isn’t About The Facts

by John Cole|  March 15, 20098:30 am| 41 Comments

This post is in: Clown Shoes

Larison just rips Captain Ed to pieces for his latest burst of idiocy, and If Captain Ed had any shame, he would put up a post apologizing for being so stupid. Even though Larison is completely right and Ed completely wrong, expect Ed to keep repeating this nonsense from now until the end of time. It isn’t about the facts, it is about the narrative, and we will be hearing about all of Obama’s nonexistent foreign policy gaffes from now until when the Petraeus/Palin ticket is formed.

And for the record- the first time I saw the “Obama lost Kyrgystan stuff” it started with none other than…. Michael Goldfarb and the Weekly Standard. Just expect them to keep repeating it until it becomes one of their undeniable truths, just like blaming Obama for the stock market drops that occurred during President Bush’s term. They have their story, and they are sticking to it.
