Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

People are weird.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Stand up, dammit!

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

I Smell a Pulitzer

This post is in: Media, Bring on the Brawndo!

Here is an example of the sort of nonsense you get every day from the newest member of the Pulitzer board:

pultizerworthy

You gotta love it for what it is. Advancing the right-wing premise from last week that the Generals are in charge, all while ignoring the fact that constitutionally it is clear who is in charge, all wrapped up with a nice, tidy Cavuto mark (Hey- don’t blame us, we’re just asking!).

Journamalism.

I didn’t read the article, but hopefully there will be an update on Obama’s smoking, Michelle’s arms, and what that unemployed idjit quitter from Alaska thinks about all this.

And then you have this…

The Joke Is On Us

I mentioned that I was in Asia on this trip thinking about the economy, when I sat down for a round of interviews. Not one of them asked me about Asia. Not one of them asked me about the economy. I was asked several times about had I read Sarah Palin’s book. (Laughter.) True. But it’s an indication of how our political debate doesn’t match up with what we need to do and where we need to go. – Barack Obama

This cracks me up:

Columbia University announced Monday that POLITICO Executive Editor Jim VandeHei has been elected to the Pulitzer Prize Board.

VandeHei , who co-founded POLITICO in early 2007, becomes the first member of the Pulitzer Board from a primarily online news outlet. The print edition of POLITICO is distributed daily in Washington when Congress is in session.

“In many ways, the Pulitzer Board is on the same mission as POLITICO: to embrace new media while fighting to protect the highest standards for writing, reporting and accuracy. I am honored to be a part of this effort,” VandeHei said.

I guess Drudge and Big Hollywood’s Andrew Breitbart were just too busy.

Does Sarah Palin have a stated position on TWOC? It seems a perfect marriage of “issue” and spokesperson to me.

“She tells you what she believes,” Anderson said. “You don’t have to guess. It’s better to listen to her than the media.” Alice Revell, from rock-ribbed Sioux County to the north of here, sported a pin that read: “I Don’t Want To Have To Say Happy Holidays.”

Splendid.

Andrew Weaver, of the University of Victoria in Canada and the IPCC, says there have been two successful break-ins at his office. An old computer was stolen (National Post).

“They went through my desk drawers. It was bizarre and the only computer that wasn’t secured was stolen. It wasn’t secured because it was broken. There was nothing on it,” says Weaver (CanWest News).

A university spokeswoman also said there had been attempts to hack into climate scientists’ computers and people posing as staff to gain access to offices. The incidents come after the hacking of emails at the University of East Anglia and the subsequent ‘Climategate’ pseudo-scandal (see our past coverage).

In a twist to that story, there are now media reports that the hacking was carried out by the Russian secret service. This theory seems to be based on the fact that the emails may have been initially leaked from a server located in the Siberian city of Tomsk and hackers in Tomsk have in the past been used by the Russian secret service to attack the websites of people they disapprove of.

“It’s a carefully made selection of emails and documents that’s not random. This is 13 years of data, and it’s not a job of amateurs,” says Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, vice chairman of the IPCC (Independent, Daily Telegraph) .

There is one guy who has taken on malicious billionaires, shadowy groups bent on harming the world and the Russian Secret f*cking Service, and it isn’t James Hansen. Too bad that other guy is about as real as a rainbow-pooping unicorn.

We’re hosed.

Fire her ass

I say it’s about time:

Executives at National Public Radio recently asked the network’s top political correspondent, Mara Liasson, to reconsider her regular appearances on Fox News because of what they perceived as the network’s political bias, two sources familiar with the effort said.

According to a source, Liasson was summoned in early October by NPR’s executive editor for news, Dick Meyer, and the network’s supervising senior Washington editor, Ron Elving. The NPR executives said they had concerns that Fox’s programming had grown more partisan, and they asked Liasson to spend 30 days watching the network.

At a follow-up meeting last month, Liasson reported that she’d seen no significant change in Fox’s programming and planned to continue appearing on the network, the source said.

It’s in their fucking code of ethics:

9. NPR journalists must get permission from the Vice President for their Division or their designee to appear on TV or other media. It is not necessary to get permission in each instance when the employee is a regular participant on an approved show. Permission for such appearances may be revoked if NPR determines such appearances are harmful to the reputation of NPR or the NPR participant.

10. In appearing on TV or other media including electronic Web-based forums, NPR journalists should not express views they would not air in their role as an NPR journalist. They should not participate in shows electronic forums, or blogs that encourage punditry and speculation rather than rather than fact-based analysis.

The wingers won’t be happy until they’re turned NPR into another arm of Murdoch media. If NPR doesn’t know this, they deserve to be defunded even more than I already think they deserve to be defunded.

Ninety-nine problems but a breach but ain’t one

I’m sure MoDo and Robin Givhan have all kinds of problems with Desiree Rogers, and maybe some of them are even legtimiate, but there were security breaches at the White House well before Rogers showed up with her Jil Sander wardrobe and trashed the place:

Long before a pair of gate-crashers penetrated a White House state dinner, the Secret Service had detailed for its internal use a lengthy list of security breaches dating to the Carter administration — including significant failures in the agency’s protection of the president.

[…..]

Then-Director Brian Stafford commissioned the review in 2001 after the service was humiliated for a third time by the most notorious presidential gate-crasher, Richard C. Weaver, who evaded inauguration security to shake George W. Bush’s hand. Weaver, a California minister, had previously infiltrated a 1991 prayer breakfast attended by then-President George H.W. Bush, and Clinton’s 1997 inaugural luncheon. He approached the younger Bush again at a prayer breakfast in 2003 before being arrested.

“I believe God makes me invisible to the security, undetectable,” Weaver told reporters. The Secret Service concluded that Weaver succeeded by manipulating others to obtain tickets, telling guards he was lost or looking for a restroom, and generally “appearing as [if] you are supposed to be there,” as the Salahis apparently did.
