Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Wait, what?

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

All hail the time of the bunny!

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

“Alexa, change the president.”

Just Lucky Timing, I Guess

by John Cole|  November 27, 200912:46 pm| 33 Comments

The Irish government releases a report on sex abuse in the Catholic church:

But rather than helping the victims, the church was concerned only with “the maintenance of secrecy, the avoidance of scandal, the protection of the reputation of the church, and the preservation of its assets,” said the 700-page report, prepared by a group appointed by the Irish government and called the Commission of Investigation Into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin.

***

Although that report portrayed a church that seemed institutionally broken, with guilt spread among many, the new one attaches particular blame to those at the top. It reserved particular criticism for the police and for four archbishops of Dublin: John Charles McQuaid, who died in 1973; Dermot Ryan, who died in 1984; Kevin McNamara, who died in 1987; and Cardinal Desmond Connell, who retired in 2004. The report said those four knew of the abuse, but did little about it.

Just the luck of the Irish that all the people to blame in this report are either dead or retired.

The Thanksgiving Sandwich

by John Cole|  November 27, 200912:02 pm| 88 Comments

This post is in: Food

And now, the best lunch of the year: the Thanksgiving sandwich.

Take a baguette, cut it open and add some slices of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, cranberries, and top with some gravy. That is right. You are putting stuffing and gravy inside tasty bread. Wrap it in tinfoil, throw it in the oven for 15 minutes at 350.

Don’t tell your cardiologist or skinny friends about this, because they will be appalled. I think this sandwich is actually illegal in some states, it is so good.

Shopping Madness

How many of you actually intend to go shopping today?

*** Update ***

What I thought. Most of you are like me and could not be dragged kicking and screaming near a store today. Which reminded me- do any of you remember a couple years back when there was an online call to action to shop to save America, and shopping was like the highest form of patriotism, etc. I want to say it was an Instapundit thing, but I just can’t remember.

We’ll be greeted as liberators, the war will pay for itself, and we can shop our way to prosperity!

Who runs Washington

by DougJ|  November 27, 200912:32 am| 53 Comments

This post is in: Assholes, Good News For Conservatives

Via TPM, stories like this are important:

But lobbyists and many of the businesses they represent say K Street is being unfairly demonized by a White House intent on scoring political points with scandal-weary voters. They warn that the latest policy will severely handicap federal regulators, who rely heavily on advisory boards for technical advice and to serve as liaisons between government and industry.

“It’s taken me years to learn what the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is,” said Robert Vastine, a lobbyist for the Coalition of Service Industries who also serves as chairman of a trade advisory board. “It’s a whole different and specialized world. It is not easily obtained knowledge, and they are crippling themselves terribly by ruling out all registered lobbyists.”

It’s great that the Obama administration is doing this. It is.

But the most interesting part of this, to me at least, is the defense that the lobbyists put up. It’s of a piece with the Kaplan/WSJ opposition to health care reform, with the general Village defense of torture, and so on.

Cranberry dishes are underrated.

Also, I love that the NFL always reminds us every Thanksgiving to be thankful we are not Lions fans.

Speaking of Stupid People

by John Cole|  November 26, 20093:23 pm| 126 Comments

This post is in: Television

One of my newest guilty pleasures is a show on A&E called The First 48. At any rate, what cracks me up is how stupid so many of the criminals are- wear gloves and leave no evidence whatsoever at a murder scene, and then get caught because you used the victim’s cell phone to call your mom for two weeks. Or kill three people in the middle of a crowd of a hundred people and get caught with the same damned gun a week later. Or walk in to the homicide interrogation room and talk for 8 hours before requesting a lawyer.

I suppose I should be happy most murderers are this stupid, but you would think they would know better.
