Ruining One Marriage at a Time

I love it:

The gay and lesbian community of Minnesota has issued a letter of apology to recently resigned Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch for ruining the institution of marriage and causing her to stray from her husband and engage in an “inappropriate relationship.”

“On behalf of all gays and lesbians living in Minnesota, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for our community’s successful efforts to threaten your traditional marriage,” reads the letter from John Medeiros. “We apologize that our selfish requests to marry those we love has cheapened and degraded traditional marriage so much that we caused you to stray from your own holy union for something more cheap and tawdry.”

I agree with DougJ– we need more of this kind of thing happening. We need to punch back at these hypocrites and frauds.

I agree with DougJ- we need more of this kind of thing happening. We need to punch back at these hypocrites and frauds.

    This is actually quite witty.

Punching back, however, means winning political victories. Savage … wordplay … is not even a stinging jab, let alone a punch.

And this is still the contemporary definition of courage. Not even knowing that your effort will do anything, not knowing what bigger fire your actions will spark.

Tunisia one year on: Where the Arab Spring started
    __
The man who lit the touch-paper of revolt in North Africa exactly a year ago was no fiery revolutionary. Mohamed Bouazizi was a young fruit and vegetable seller, supporting eight people on less than $150 (£100) a month. His ambition was to trade up from a wheelbarrow to a pick-up truck.
    __
“On that day Mohamed left home to go and sell his goods as usual,” said his sister Samya.
    __
“But when he put them on sale, three inspectors from the council asked him for bribes. Mohamed refused to pay.”
    __
“They seized his goods and put them in their car. They tried to grab his scales but Mohamed refused to give them up, so they beat him,” she said.
    __
Whether he was also insulted and spat at by a female official is disputed, but something snapped inside the 26-year old grocer. He went to the governor’s office to ask for his goods back; the governor would not see him.
    __
So he acquired a can of petrol, poured it over himself and lit a match.

Lit a match. With a hell of a punch.

OT – while I know that many many people have problems with poverty in this country, I would like to point out that there is a fucking ad on my TV for Latisse (or however it is spelled) for women with “inadequate” eyelashes. Think about that for a second. We live in a country where a drug company is spending millions of dollars to market an “eyelash thickening” drug to a bunch of women with such low self esteem that they would risk their sight (when you hear the side effects) for the sake of thicker fucking eyelashes while denying the use of their other drugs to poor people who cannot afford to a) go to the doctors to get a prescription or b) fill the prescription once they have been diagnosed.

If there is one thing that you can point to that is truly rotten in this country then it is a fucking “eyelash thickening” drug. That and the fact that “Party Suppliers” is still in fucking business.

Red on top; fire in the hole.

But yes, metaphorically speaking we need those willing to light themselves on fire for the cause – Dan Choi, the OWS protestors who get arrested, Bradley Manning…the list goes on.

It is obvious people are becoming more emboldened. Look at the guys who keep telling Newt Gingrich to go fuck himself.

I would love to pass Thom Freidmann in an airport or somewhere and yell at him “hey SUCK on this!”. These pieces of shit need to feel the flame of discontent whenever they get out of their bubble.

@Egg Berry: No, but strongly worded letters have no value. They don’t force any action. Now, if someone stood up in a GOP primary debate and apologized to Newt on behalf of all gays for causing him to run out on his marriage with his cancer-stricken wife, that would force some kind of action – that would at least have some value.

Koch’s partner in adultery is rumored to be one of her legislative staff. I am amused by PZ Myers’ comment on the rumor:

the article, unfortunately, speculates that it was recently fired staffer Michael Brodkorb. I’ve met Brodkorb, and consider that libelous; I think slime molds would find it repugnant to mate with him.

In related news, Rick Snyder in Michigan signed a bill banning domestic partner benefits for public employees.

It’s definitely a step back for LGBT equality, and the governor is trying to rationalize it by saying it’s necessary to save money, in keeping with his “business Republican” image. Bullshit, I say. He threw a bone to the radicals from western Michigan who control the state’s GOP.

This is particularly true because this first wave of gay couples getting married didn’t expect to get married. So they didn’t have the social pressure, and were able to create good, loyal relationships that are characteristic of an ideal marriage all by themselves, and heterosexual couples can learn from them.

And speaking of classy midwest Republicans:

U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) has written a formal apology to first lady Michelle Obama for disparaging her appearance during a recent chat at a Hartford church.
    __
__“I regret my inappropriate comment and I have sent a personal note to the First Lady apologizing,” Sensenbrenner said in a statement today. His office declined to release the letter.
    __
__The veteran congressman made reference to Michelle Obama’s “big butt” while talking to a group of church members at a Christmas bazaar at St. Aidan’s Episcopalian Church in Hartford earlier this month. He was suggesting it was hypocritical for her to launch a national campaign to combat obesity.
    __
__Perhaps Sensenbrenner – who was accompanied by an aide – assumed it was safe to make wisecracks about the first lady’s posterior in such Republican territory.
    __
__But, as the old saying goes, this is what happens when you assume.

    http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/news/136060223.html

    I love this part:

Some at St. Aidan’s aren’t pleased with the apology.
    __
__”It’s weak,” said Micki Hoffmann, a 65-year-old retired teacher.
    __
Hoffmann said she had no problem with Sensenbrenner disagreeing with the first lady on policy issues. That, Hoffmann said, is all well and fine.
    __
__”What made us angry were his remarks about her body image – not her policies or positions – but her person,” the Hartford resident said.
    __
__Hoffmann said she is asking for an apology from Sensenbrenner to the members at St. Aidan’s.

What a perfect response. 2012 is an important election in MN because voters will be deciding if we need a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. It’s kind of a toss-up right now. Every year about this time a lot of these same drug execs and their families attend a theatrical production of a Christmas Carol. I’m told it’s a 19th century fairy tale of a heartless capitalist who finally starts to care about a kid who is dying ’cause of a lack of basic health care. Then the execs go back to work and tell all the Bob Cratchits that their Tiny Tims can go pound sand.

I never realized until just this minute that the gays ruined my marriage (not the fact that my wife wasn’t interested in anything but herself and her own priorities to the exclusion of all else). This has got to stop. First, me, well not first, but twenty years ago, and now poor Amy Koch, yet another victim of the gays’ mission to ruin all that is good in the world.

Rubbing people’s faces in their own hypocrisy is unforgivable; hypocrites, at least Republican hypocrites, deserve a pass no matter how profound their hypocrisy. Otherwise, we could eventually end up with people being held accountable for their own behavior, something that should be avoided at all costs in a true meritocracy like ours.

Gays: Stop ruining marriage for the rest of us.

[Note: I recently watched a small British film called “Made in Dagenham” about the struggle of women machinists (think sewing machines more than lathes) in Great Britain to receive equal pay for equal work. It was a reminder of how nice it is when societal tides are moving in the right direction. I’d almost forgotten how nice that feeling is.]

    @Brachiator:

    What purist bullshit!

So, we gays have to do something akin to lighting ourselves on fire in order to gain equal access to our civil rights?

How about the thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of us who have been beaten, maimed and even killed for simply living our lives openly in hostile territory?

We all know about Matthew Shepard, but there have been hundreds before him and there have been hundreds after him.

There was one guy in Mississippi who was murdered and his body tossed on a pile of burning tires.

Or another guy in Tennessee, stabbed multiple times, and then locked in a car. When his kidnappers realized he was still alive dumped him on the road and ran him over repeatedly.

Or the the 15 year old girl living openly in New Jersey, who, when she refused the advances of some man on the street, was stabbed to death.

Despite your thinking about Western civilization, it takes a hell of a lot of courage to live openly as a queer person.

And FSM knows the bullshit Transgendered people have been maimed or killed for bucking gender norms.

You and your high horse can go fuck each other!
