Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

This blog will pay for itself.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I really should read my own blog.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

No one could have predicted…

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

NYC update

To update the post below, I will stay in the upper west side of Manhattan tomorrow night before an interview on Thursday, so if anyone knows a good place to hang out please share it in the comments. I know this is a last minute thing so please don’t feel any pressure to get fired or leave the toddler with strangers on my behalf. At the worst I will get sloshed and show the bartender five hundred pictures of my dog.

That sounds like the best thing that could happen.

How far up? I think there are lots of interesting places in the Columbia U neighborhood, on the #1 line around maybe 104th st? This is by memory.

Is anyone getting a strange deja vu sensation when the stock market report comes on? Housing prices are rising at an unsustainable rate, too.

I want the economy to be strong, but for the right reasons. No more bubbles, please.

I should add (WP doesn’t let me edit on the mobile site) that I don’t live in NY and I’m not there now.

Il Baretto. 53rd and 11th, across from the Daily Show. Lovely local Italian wine bar and cafe.

@PeakVT: I don’t know if Tim’s married, but I bet if the bartender is a single female, that is a very solid play on his part.

Tim – I’m not really familiar with UWS, but if you manage to make it down to the Hell’s Kitchen area (i.e. in the 50s on the West Side), I would be down to meet in the 9:30ish time frame or so. I’ll already be half in the bag, so make sure you are drinking earlier. Something along the lines of what Moesha recommended above would be a good spot, although something on 9th Avenue or east would work better.

For ease of access by public transport, Why not Hurley’s in midtown? 232 w. 48th.

The story goes that Hurley wouldn’t sell out when Rockefeller Center was being built right there, and the place is there to this day.

Should add about Hurley’s – 3 floors plus a patio.

Oh, and while at the Upper West Side, a trip to Zabar’s market is mandatory. Broadway & 80th.

@NotMax: I’ve heard they are famous, but the only reason I know of them is that they sold fake lobster salad.

I might be around to stop by tmrw, but work has been hectic this week so I doubt it (Just taking a little break now before heading back to it). Would either drive or train depending on the final time and place.

not sure how ‘upper’ the West side but 9th Ave around the upper 40’s was an endless row of great places to eat. One place called simply ‘Turkish Cuisine’ had the best Baba Ganush I have ever had and lots of other good things. A bit South and across the street was a ‘Bistro’ (don’t remember the full name) that made a fabulous Ratatouille, and grilled lamb that is to die for. But we didn’t have a bad meal anywhere on that street.

Closer to Times Square was a different story.

You lucky bastard. I hope to win the lotto so we can get a place near 9th & 50th and eat ourselves to death!

@Schlemizel: I actually live on the East Side closer to Gramercy, but as I’ll be in the 50s in Midtown East, I figure it will make an easy crosstown ride…think I can catch a cab on Wednesday night if needed.

When I spent a couple of months in Harlem last year, my favorite place on the UWS was the Amsterdam Tavern (great Mac & Cheese). Or if 106th is too far north, try George Keeley’s at Amsterdam and 83rd.

I’m in Harlem; Frederick Douglass Blvd (8th Ave) between 112th and 123rd is full of bars and restaurants. Bier, btwn 113 and 114, has great, well, beer, 67 Orange Strret, across the street btwn 112 and 113 specializes in 19th century cocktails and Harlem Tavern, at 116, is a really fun lively bar/restaurant. There are more, but those are the ones I. can think of off the top of my head.

OMG if it”s still open — Lena’s restaurant. They have a fruit drink (non-alc) called Morir Sonando which means To Die Dreaming. And get the ropa vieja or any other entree. Cheap, awesome Dominican food

If there’s any chance you’ll be around in the morning, head to Absolute Bagels on 108th and Broadway. Best damn bagels on the UWS, and made by Gentiles. I got half a dozen everything bagels literally seconds out of the oven. Amazing.

I’m so late to this party that I should probably just go home (oh, wait…), but Tim F., should you check back here, my recommendations for great bars actually on the Upper West Side would be:

Dublin House, 225 W. 79th St. (btw Amsterdam and Broadway) – a NYC landmark
The Dead Poet, 450 Amsterdam Ave. (btw 81-82 Sts.)

Or if you’re feeling a bit more continental:

Cafe Luxembourg, 200 W. 70th St. (btw Amsterdam and West End Aves.)

Both George Keeley’s and the Harlem Tavern, recommended above by ShaneinUtah (#20) and Nicole (#21), would be fine choices as well.

@Full Metal Wingnut: Or, if you’re ever up for a trip to the East Side, Harley’s Smoke Shack on 116th between 1st and 2nd. Better than Dinosaur’s and without the ridonkulous wait. I’m mostly a plant eater, but I make an exception for Harley’s.

Zabar’s for sure. And you can take all the delicious goodies home to share: unless you eat it all yourself.
It’s on West End Ave. beween 72 and the 80s.
