Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Be a wild strawberry.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Let there be snark.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Republicans do not trust women.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Friday Recipe Exchange: Fajitas

by Anne Laurie|  January 31, 20149:00 pm| 65 Comments

jeffreyw chicken fajitas

From our Food Goddess, TaMara:

I know it’s a big party weekend, but since we’ve covered Super Bowl snacks twice already in the recipe exchange, I didn’t see how I could get away with it again this year. For those snacks ideas, click here and here. All those recipes should give you plenty of ideas for your Super Bowl Party. Obligatory, Go Broncos!

What are you making for the Super Bowl? Or more importantly, what are you making for the Puppy Bowl? Might I suggest Puppy Chow? Seriously good snack! And who are you picking for the big game?

Now about those fajitas. A while ago, JeffreyW posted about making his own fajita seasoning and I was curious. We emailed back and forth a few times about good recipes and then I was ready to make my own. I can’t imagine I will ever buy taco or fajita seasoning again. It’s easy to make and I can control the salt, which is a plus. And fajitas are a quick, simple dinner for any night of the week.

Here’s the recipe that started it all: JeffreyW’s Chicken Fajitas (pictured above), click here.

And then here’s where I went with it:

Knee Update

by John Cole|  January 31, 20148:11 pm| 105 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Knee feels much better today, and there is clearly no serious structural damage. I iced it every two hours last night, woke up this morning and took some advil and stumbled around and put the brace back on, and I’m almost 99% sure it’s just a knee sprain. If it keeps getting better, I’ll just keep doing what I am doing.

On the upside, this injury came at a perfect time, because it has been a month since I had a haircut or trimmed my beard fully, so I have a total mountain man look with complete neckbeard, and now I am hobbling around the house with a walking stick and fluffy plush bathrobe to complete the look.

My brother came over and got so hysterical when he saw me that he asked me to say “HODOR HODOR HODOR” before asking me to say “HELLO LITTLE HOBBITS” and then deciding I actually look like a shorter Hagrid.

So I got that going for me.

*** Update ***

Beard, goddamnit.

Things I Wish I Had Written, Mark Kleiman Edition

So true:

The discussion of “rescheduling” marijuana is confused because most of the people engaged in it don’t know how the law works.

Jacob Sullum, always willing to let his ignorance be the measure of other people’s knowledge, utterly unwilling to let mere facts get in the way of libertarian ideology, and eager to please his paymasters by slagging a Democratic President, illustrates my point in his response to the latest CNN Obama interview.

That second paragraph pretty much sums up the entire raison d’être For Reason Magazine.

Looks Like Christie Shouldn’t Have Dissed the Nerd

if this NYT story accurate, that means Christie LIED FOR TWO HOURS DURING PRESS CONFERENCE; # http://t.co/eTgPN0IJvb

— Eric Boehlert (@EricBoehlert) January 31, 2014

A refresher, January 10th, Alec MacGinnis in TNR:

… But during his two hours at the podium yesterday, Christie pushed back against this perception by telling the world that Wildstein was no chum of his:

Well, let me just clear something up, OK, about my childhood friend David Wildstein. It is true that I met David in 1977 in high school. He’s a year older than me. David and I were not friends in high school. We were not even acquaintances in high school. I mean, I had a high school in Livingston, a three-year high school that had 1,800 students in a three-year high school in the late ’70s, early 1980. I knew who David Wildstein was. I met David on the Tom Kean for governor campaign in 1977. He was a youth volunteer, and so was I. Really, after that time, I completely lost touch with David. We didn’t travel in the same circles in high school. You know, I was the class president and athlete. I don’t know what David was doing during that period of time…We went 23 years without seeing each other. And in the years we did see each other, we passed in the hallways.

In other words: David Wildstein, are you kidding me? Different lunch table, dudes….

Turn out the lights, the party’s over

Put Joe and Mika on suicide watch:

The former Port Authority official who personally oversaw the lane closings on the George Washington Bridge in the scandal now swirling around Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said on Friday that the governor knew about the lane closings when they were happening, and that he had the evidence to prove it.

Being a big football week, this seems appropriate:

And here’s a very good summary of the ties between the Christie administration and Wolff & Samson (the law firm involved with the Hoboken development).
