I visit Reddit a lot, but couldn’t care less about it’s internal drama.
Pogonip
What is an AMA, what is 4chan, and why do we never see big furry Steve anymore? Did you give him away? Also, a while back you mentioned a friend of yours opening a bed-and-breakfast; does it look as if it’ll be a success?
Keith G
The comments under the announcement are most entertaining.

@Pogonip:
“AMA” is “Ask me anything,” a popular feature. As for 4chan, go look.

@Baud: It’s more about another female getting her ass handed to her in the Silicon Valley/IT High School region. Again.
It’s not about Reddit, just like it’s not about KP.

I’ll be honest, I’ve been kind of fascinated by her and her husband. They both seem intensely driven, yet what drives them baffles me: http://www.vanityfair.com/style/scandal/2013/03/buddy-fletcher-ellen-pao

@Corner Stone:
True. Big contingent of those types there.
Linnaeus
Looks like the Greek parliament just accepted a plan to resolve the debt crisis that’s pretty close to what Greek voters rejected on Sunday.
Baud
@Linnaeus:
Sounds like they want debt reduction and they are willing to deal to get it.
Diana
@Linnaeus: I know, uugh, what?
Linnaeus
@Baud:
They did more than deal, I’d say. Whether that was the right way to go will no doubt be debated for weeks or months.

Middle daughter (age 21, and was always the smartest person in the house until she blew up her freshman year at college) is visiting. She lives in the middle of nowhere Southern Illinois with a 39 year old guy who never really got started. At the moment, she has a decent waitressing job at a winery and modest but comfortable surroundings next to his mother while gardening.
I am just informed that her diminished circumstances aren’t diminished enough, and that her music needs a more starve-y focus. Now, he wants them to live out of a van at rest areas while doing gigs for free (with a tip bucket) and busking.
Goddammit.
Baud
@Linnaeus:
Not sure what people expected the end game to be.
Yatsuno
@Linnaeus: They’re technically not in default until 30 days after the missed debt payment. And the Greeks really are desperate for a solution. But this is gonna bite Tspiras in the ass now, since the whole referendum was just pretty much a wasted exercise. And once this hits the streets of Athens, that could get very messy. Tsipras will be lucky to just be out of a job.

Not sure why they thought saying No, even hoping for a Yes, would lead to anything but exit.
They have to exit and pull an Iceland. Devalue some notional currency and trade services and goods for hard foreign currency.
Either that or wake up 5 years from now and be forced to do the same damn thing.

Not gonna link to the Daily Caller, but… The right is turning Ariana Grande’s disgusting doughnut licking scandal into a problem for Hillary. Grande’s manager (same manager as that Bieber asshat) is hosting a fundraiser.

tell me again that there is nothing racial about the coverage MSM gives whenever Serena Williams beats some little white tennis player?
oh it can’t be because Serena trains her ass off and works for every demand hit? Naw it’s cause she so “manly” don’t you see and her rivals are more “womanly”

I hope Serana wins tomorrow so I can bathe in white tears…its damn ridiculous.
oh and if Serena Williams was “slimmer”, she’d be Venus Williams, who a damn fine tennis player in her own right, who if not for certain injuries and her auto immune disease would probably be killing these same athletes Serena did

When crises collide.
And trivializing rape: not just for American conservatives any more.
Yatsuno
@Linnaeus: His biggest ally right now is France because they currently have a Socialist government. The problem is France has its own debt issues right now plus no one has the economic might in Europe to take on Merkel and Germany right now. And yeah I could totally see Germany torpedoing any deal if they think any German investors or banks will take any sort of haircut. They’re more or less in control of Greece right now, and the only way the Greeks get it back is by getting out and bringing the drachma back. Otherwise they’ll be at the beck and call of the Germans all over again.

Judging by the relatively few (read none) buskers that I’ve seen playing at rest stops, this does not sound like a particularly promising business plan. Also too, living out of a van sucks, as anyone who has ever been in a traveling band can testify.

Atticus Finch is a racist in “Go Tell a Watchman”.
That is the big news in Michiko Kakutani’s review in the NY Times. Actually it reads more like a warning than a review.
Watchman was written before Mockingbird. Then revised to become the masterpiece.
Cannot believe Ms. Lee, if she were of sound mind, would want one of the greatest figures in literary history turned into an angry, old racist.

So one of Americas greatest female athletes, and arguable soon to be the greatest American tennis player is getting ready to maybe break records if is she wins, and the U.S. “paper of record” decides to publish an article where her non-American rivals are essentially using there failure to beat her as cause to body shame her!

@MazeDancer:
Go Set a Watchman is the novel Harper Lee originally submitted to a publisher in the mid-1950s, from which she eventually reworked Scout’s childhood memories into To Kill A Mockingird. Like it or not, it was Lee who conceived the elderly Atticus Finch as a bigot, before she wrote Mockingbird. Yes, it’s shocking to those of us who remember him as the hero of Mockingird and Gregory Peck’s legendary film portrayal. But it’s no accident, not something she let slip because those around her took the publication of Watchman out of a helpless old woman’s hands.

lamh36 – I read the article you linked. If you didn’t know Serena Williams was black, you wouldn’t have known from the article because race isn’t mentioned at all. (There is a picture, but no words)
Some players didn’t want to bulk up because of appearance. Some didn’t because they thought it would negatively affect their play. Some didn’t care because they thought it might help them win.
No player criticized Serena for her appearance. Some praised her.
Instead, you took it as an opportunity to attack white viewers and white players specifically by race.
If there if a racist here, it’s you.

What’s Russian for “sour grapes”? It seriously comes across as, I’m not willing to work as hard as Serena did to become a tennis great, so you should pity me!

Which begs the question, has she ever gone a week without showering and if so, how many weeks? Which is yet another angle on the whole busking thing; itchy and stinky ain’t gonna make many fans…..come to think of it, i once heard a punk band called itchy and stinky and they didn’t win many fans either.
Edit: and enough snarky comments, i’m not helping much. hope the situation resolves itself in the way best for her.

It just seemed easier to refer her there than to take the effort—on my phone—to go into a complicated and no doubt futile explanation. I figured she’s a big girl, she can handle it.
Omnes Omnibus
@guachi: I have noticed over the past couple of days that you seem to show up on racially charged threads with a marginally racist comment. Just saying.
At the same time, I find Sharapova more attractive than Williams. But then Williams is the easily the better athlete. And in athletic competetion that is what matters, isn’t it?
Steeplejack
@Amir Khalid:
Well, it does seem odd that only now has she decided to publish it.

@Steeplejack:
The typescript was hidden among Lee’s papers for many a long year, so we are told, and her lawyer recently came upon it quite by accident. I’ve read the first chapter, which has appeared in the Guardian.

I don’t know if this helps, but I just saw my first Serena Williams endorsement ad, for (I think) the Chase Banking smartphone app. The pitch was, she had to work hard to perfect her backhand, but not to use this app.
ETA: This particularly stuck in my mind because I also saw the bit about Sharapova making more money on endorsements. Maybe someone is getting a clue that Serena is (pardon the pun) bankable.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack: It’s all good. Except for pogonip’s therapy bills.

I forget but will this win make it Serena’s 21 and therefore record breaking win? or is she still a tourni or 2 win short?

Steeplejack
@Amir Khalid:
But why is it being published now?
“Harper Lee’s ‘Go Set a Watchman’ May Have Been Found Earlier Than Thought.”
From that article:
It seems to me that if Harper Lee regarded Go Set a Watchman as a genuine sequel and a successfully executed work of art, and not as an early draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, she would have published it before now or at least not have allowed it to become lost in her papers.

@Diana: It’s becoming clear that Syriza had no plan B for what probably should have been an obviously anticipated response by the Europeans of holding the banks hostage.
Varoufakis has publically said that Greece does not have the technical abilities (i.e., machinery, but I think also knowledgeable, mature people) to take them through a default and Euro exit. So that left them with no options.
Sadly, we will be back in the same situation again in a few months or a year. My remaining hope is that some sane members of all the Greek parties come around to an organized return to the drachma, i.e., a “drachma party” and start campaigning for the public support of such a move. It would be difficult, and the Europeans will again hound the people with 24/7 terror on TV for even contemplating it, but the alternative is eternal debt bondage and selling everything – ports, airports, coastlines, even islands, to foreign interests.
James E Powell
Serena is just plain awesome. The only thing she’s missing is a worthy opponent. So we don’t have anything like Agassi/Sampras, Borg/McEnroe, or Evert/Navratilova. Somebody, I think it might have been Evert, remarked today that when Serena makes up her mind to win, Sharapova cannot touch her.
Steeplejack
@sparrow:
I’m sure Goldman Sachs would be happy to guide them through it for a reasonable fee.

I read the actual NYT article and the Twitter. the Twitter gave the ugly implication. I was actually expecting the article to imply steroids more but when I read the article it was longer and more a report on a large number of different female tennis players experiences with being viewed negatively for being muscular if they sought to win. I didn’t get a sense of the writers opinion, just a view that apparently the tennis world has a lot of prejudice against female muscles showing. If you are a parent or a female athlete that might be a valuable warning.
I still think there might be the hidden implication that at least some of the people think others (not just Serena) are using steroids. One of the quotes was unintentionally funny because it was excusing laziness though.
The Twitter comment was just an attack on Serena Williams, as usual for many twitters it shouldn’t have been sent.

@Botsplainer: Just because she can? She’s smart, but not wise yet. I hope she doesn’t do anything that makes climbing out of a hole almost impossible.

@Diana: Buddy Fletcher and Ellen Pao seem so fiercely determined to fight for a place among the Masters Of The Universe, wealthy white males who own everything. They would like to be that when they grow up.
To my mind it’s like wanting to be Batman. You can write that as a story, but in the real world that person is a monster and does too much damage to tolerate. By the same token, these MOTUs are monstrous and rather than encourage women and black people and so on to fight for a place among them, it’s better to ask why the fuck such unaccountable powers are allowed to exist when they do so much societal damage?
It’s not that Buddy Fletcher or Ellen Pao should get to be a rich white dude. The rich white dudes should be forced to live within the means and resources of a Buddy Fletcher or Ellen Pao. That would be justice.

And there are many many musicians who busked to get money, to get themselves out performing in front of people, to practice their live chops. Musicians who have done this and then made a living for themselves have said that this was essential for their careers.
Personally I witnessed a bunch of different musicians go from busking to pretty great careers. Tracy Chapman and Martin Sexton spring to mind.

@Kurt Montandon: I agree. Complaining about reddit is a little like yelling “I hate the bulletin board!”
I say little, because there are plenty of sub pages that are just assholian. But then it becomes similar to facebook, where I am having a serious discussion with a friend of a friend who wants to vote for Trump because ‘he’s an inconvenient truth teller.’ Which then becomes a little like life like that time when you’re at a party and talking to a friend’s boyfriend who’s saying things about how gays don’t have a biological urge to procreate because gays.
tl;dr reddit is like life.

Your comment is a lie from word one to the bottom. Nearly every paragraph of the Daily Beast story reveals Ms Williams’ race explicitly, and the whole article discusses the contrast between white women and black women, with black women coming out on the bottom of nearly every comparison.
Fuck you for being a racist liar, and an asshole.

@Botsplainer: I was married to a directionless guy like that when I was 21. We were barely scraping by as it was, and then he quit his waiter job without anything else lined up. He quickly got down to sitting around all day jerking off and watching cartoons.
And I was also considered smart until I dropped out of college. But I needed to do this dumb thing with this dumb guy, apparently, and there was no talking me out of it. A few thoughtful adults, including my parents, tried to steer me straight, but I just…I had to do it my way.
If it’s any comfort – and I know, anecdotes ain’t data, but what the heck – I eventually got tired of this existence of barely hanging on with a guy who had no ambition at all. 15 years later, I’m married to a good guy who works hard, I finished that college degree and a master’s degree too, and I’ve got some happy healthy kids. Sometimes I hate being a late bloomer, sometimes I get into a funk where I really want those years back because I feel like I’ll always be 10 steps behind the people who had it together all along, but it’s not the same as never blooming. You live, you make mistakes, you learn, you get better. Eventually.

@Diana:
Sorry, Ellen Pao is just a rich entitled jerk. End of story.
Instead of doing the right thing and saying “I fucked up, I’ve heard the reddit community and I’m rehiring Victoria,” Pao tried the old CEO-snubs-the-lowly-peons routine: “We do not discuss individual hires.” And the idiotic “Mistakes were made” bullshit.
Fuck that shit.
In an online community, the CEO either responds to the community’s concerns or hi/r ass is grass. PAO thought she could Donald-Trump it out. The Donald goes over real big with movement conservatives — not so much with online communities like reddit.
The issue here isn’t whether Pao is a woman. The real point is that she acted like a typical rich asshole CEO who doesn’t have a clue, and she got her ass handed to her because of that.
