Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Bark louder, little dog.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“woke” is the new caravan.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

This blog will pay for itself.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I really should read my own blog.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

What with one thing and another, I didn’t get to post this draft last week, but Pence’s latest LAWN ORDURE! news conference reminded me…

The more out-of-control Trump acts, the more the “establishment” Republicans try to pretend he’s some kind of unpredictable phenomenon that came down upon their beleaguered party like a new version of Ebola. Let’s not let them get away with this, because the standard GOPers on offer are no better:

    Color me pissed off. I just received the following email from my son’s high school:

    Dear XXX Students and Parents,

    This email is to inform you of the expectations we have for our student-athletes, student body, and fans during the playing of our National Anthem.
    The following is required:
    1. Athlete and spectators are to stand and face the flag with eyes on the flag.
    2. The right hand is to be placed over the heart.
    3. Athletes and spectators should remain in this position from the beginning until the end of the National Anthem.
    4. Male athletes and spectators are to remove any type of head covering.
    Athletes or spectators who exhibit any outward display other than what is listed above in an attempt to show disrespect, or promote a personal agenda during the playing of our National Anthem will be removed from the sideline or stands, not permitted to participate in the contest, and face disciplinary action from XXX High School.

    Thank you,

    Makes me want to go to a fucking game so I can see them try to drag me out of the stands.

    There was a game tonight, so I wonder if something happened to cause them to send out this email. I know it wasn’t my kid, because he doesn’t go to the games…. But it would have been my kid, because I’ve taught them that they should never feel compelled to stand for the National Anthem, say the Pledge, or participate in any group thing if they feel they shouldn’t, for whatever reason. Forcing someone to honor something makes it meaningless. Forcing someone to honor the flag is the ultimate show of disrespect for the flag. IRONY.

    He is so deplorable that his own Lieutenant Governor who is running to replace him won’t say his name. He makes references to Mitch Daniels and the things they achieved together, but when referring to things that happened during the current governor he refers to our administration. So in a red state where you are the governor your name is so toxic that you are “he cannot be named”. And to top it off the guy is trailing the democrat just like Pence was.

    Traditionally, ladies never remove their hats in public, so that’s why only men are specified. There’s a grey area when women wear traditionally male hats (like baseball caps) — some etiquette mavens say they should remove them, others say that the type of hat doesn’t matter and it’s the fact that a lady is wearing it that means it doesn’t have to be removed.

    Must admit to never understanding the connection, if any, of sport events with the anthem.

    Does the school play it prior to the high school band giving a concert? Before the curtain goes up on a performance by the drama department? Introductory to inter-scholastic chess matches? Why single out sports as being somehow tied to the anthem or flag?

    That said, the school is entirely in the wrong, based on your information. Even more liable if they receive any state or federal monies. Contact the school superintendent (or the archdiocese, if that applies) to register your displeasure.

    @NotMax:
    http://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/6957582/the-history-national-anthem-sports-espn-magazine

    THAT STORY BEGINS, as so many tales in modern American sports do, with Babe Ruth. History records various games in which “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played dating from the mid-1800s, but Ruth’s last postseason appearances for the Boston Red Sox coincided with the song’s first unbreakable bond with the sports world, in 1918. Game 1 of that year’s World Series was notable for many reasons. For starters, the Red Sox and the opposing Cubs were considered champs back then. After 1918, they would serve as symbols of futility; neither won a title for the rest of the century. But at the time, the Cubs were so highly regarded that their World Series home was not Wrigley Field (then Weeghman Park), which seated only 14,000 fans; the National League champs instead rented out the White Sox’s Comiskey Park, which accommodated about 30,000.

    There was also World War I, which blackened everything, including the national pastime. The U.S. had entered the war 17 months earlier, and in that time some 100,000 American soldiers died. Veterans who survived often came home maimed or shell-shocked from encounters with modern warfare’s first mechanized mass-killing machines. At home, the public mood was sullen and anxious. The war strained the economy and the workforce, including baseball’s. The government began drafting major leaguers for military service that summer and ordered baseball to end the regular season by Labor Day. As a result, the 1918 Series was the lone October Classic played entirely in September.

    World War I wasn’t the only issue weighing heavily on fans. On Sept. 4, the day before the first game, a bomb ripped through the Chicago Federal Building, killing four people and injuring 30. The Industrial Workers of the World were thought to be behind the attack, a retaliation for the conviction of several IWW members on federal sedition charges in the court of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. (Two years later, Landis was appointed commissioner of baseball, a position he held until 1944.) Domestic terrorism didn’t exactly generate interest in a lighthearted day at the ball game. For the opener at Comiskey, newspapers optimistically estimated that a sellout crowd would drop anywhere from 50 cents for a bleacher ticket to $3 for a box seat. When only 19,000 and change showed, a Chicago Herald-Examiner headline proclaimed, “Scalpers Are Making No Money.”

    Although the Cubs festooned the park in as much red, white and blue as possible, the glum crowd in the stands for Game 1 remained nearly silent through most of Ruth’s 1-0 shutout victory over Chicago’s Hippo Vaughn. Not even the Cubs Claws, the forerunners to Wrigley’s Bleacher Bums, could gin up enthusiasm. “For a baseball game in a world’s Championship series,” the Chicago Tribune wrote, “yesterday’s combat between the Cubs and Red Sox was perhaps the quietest on record.”

    I’m going along with his premise that Mr. Scott had a weapon. If I don’t make that concession, I can’t have any kind of conversation.

    And, frankly, it doesn’t seem implausible to me that someone dealing with a mixed group of people in plainclothes and uniforms might think that some of the people in plainclothes were criminals he might need to defend himself against. That seems much more likely than thinking that a random bystander would decide to pull a gun on armed police for shits and giggles, which seems to be his understanding of the incident.

    Private Catholic school, unfortunately.

    Or maybe not unfortunately, as the fact that it is a Catholic school just informs you of the ammunition that you need to use, and the bible is an endless source of moral principles to use when engaging in rhetorical debate:

    Isaiah 1:17English Standard Version (ESV)

    17 learn to do good;
    seek justice,
    correct oppression;
    bring justice to the fatherless,
    plead the widow’s cause.

    Job 12:22English Standard Version (ESV)

    22 He uncovers the deeps out of darkness
    and brings deep darkness to light.

    Seems like a teachable moment, and there are plenty of tools for the students (and parents) to use in the vernacular of that institution. A little poster-board and paint to write up one of these (and I’m sure that there are many more) while you take a knee during the anthem invites the spiritual ones to reconsider their stance.

    I adhere more to Buddhist principles these days, but attended parochial school in my early years when we lived across the street from the school, convent, cathedral and rectory. My elderly 1st grade teacher Sister Rosaria was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, and I’ve known a few cool priests, too. #NotAllCatholics are authoritarians and/or pederasts.

    That’s been my hobbyhorse for a while now: training police to expect instant compliance with their commands means that they will have no tools to deal with people who are unable to obey or understand those commands for whatever reason. It’s not just people with permanent disabilities, either. People in diabetic shock or with concussions have been shot and killed by police for not acting the way the police expected, because they’re only trained to expect normal, unimpaired behavior and to assume that anything else is automatically dangerous.

    @Mnemosyne:
    There are two worlds we live in. The rational and irrational. The rational is obvious. Things have explainable causes and effects, good or bad. The irrational has beliefs. People know their beliefs and as they live in an irrational world that is all they can see. The earth is flat, praying will save you, climate change is a myth, cutting taxes on the wealthy provides jobs…… They believe it therefore it is real. To get them to see reality the foundation of that belief has to crack or crumble, in some way. They won’t see facts/reality because those facts don’t agree with their beliefs. The more you argue, cajole, explain, clue x 4 upside the head, the more dogged they will be in refusing to accept anything but their beliefs. They’ve invested a lot in those beliefs, you have to invest more than that to wake them up. I think you have to totally break down the people at the top of the food chain that they believe in. When the top people fail and fall is when their beliefs will be able to be questioned.
    That’s why I said that change for the police must come from above, it is the only way to break the chain of beliefs about the job. First they have to understand it is not the police against everyone else. They have to learn to accept that not everyone is their enemy. And they do believe this because they get the idea reinforced all the time.

    I would think that a bunch of armed people yelling different things and pointing guns at you would make non autistic people freeze up and not know what the fuck was going on and panic as well. I’ve actually been shot at 4 times in civilian life, only one actually intentional and a level of panic was there in 3 of them. The other time was unintentional and was the closest I’ve come to being killed, the person who pulled the trigger was a friend and said the .357 hollow point missed my head by about an inch. I did a normal thing and walked off a porch and he did an abnormal thing and fired a shot to scare those of us supposedly inside the house. A step down off the porch saved my life. No panic to speak of but anger and almost the loss of a friend. BTW he latter became a deputy sheriff. I rode along with him. Once. He didn’t mind arresting someone after an illegal search because the guy got to spend the weekend in his jail. That convinced me that I didn’t need friends like that. I say cops have been like they are today because that was 43 yrs ago and all his buddies didn’t give a crap about a bad arrest, just that he’d had a successful evening, he scored an arrest. The only thing that has changed is that we know about more of these types of incidents today.

    ETA: Oh, and definitely gotta keep the social groups in their little boxes marked D. Only one way, by command. You know what to do with those OTHER ones marked S and L and especially R, right?

    @Ruckus: I hear you. I remember having to go to confession before my first communion. What does a seven-year-old have to confess? So I said that I fought with my brother, and some other random thing, and the third thing was that I lied (about the second thing).

    The scales fell from my eyes when I was about 12 and being very earnest, but then I started really listening, in my earnestness, and thought – “Wait – that doesn’t make any sense.” I wasn’t confronted by the hypocrisy of limos, but of the message itself.

    And so – off to light candles and incense and sit on my meditation cushion and pipe some Krisna Das into my ears.

    @Kropadope: It’s shot with a modified camera with a IR590 filter on it. It’s a near infrared shot.

    @?BillinGlendaleCA: What length of exposure? Time of day? It’s stunning. As though the foliage is in peak flower.

  153. 153.

    ?BillinGlendaleCA

    September 24, 2016 at 4:38 am

    @Aleta: It was shot about 3pm, exposure was 1/160sec, f/4, ISO-100. Near infrared reflects off plants, so that accounts for the white(or off white) vegetation.

    ETA: The camera(Samsung NX-300) has had the “hot mirror”(IR/UV blocking filter) removed and replaced with glass, so the exposure times are normal.

    @?BillinGlendaleCA: Why is the IR/UV blocking filter called a “hot mirror” ? And, is it the reflection of the near infrared that makes the contrast so high, or is there another reason too?

    September 24, 2016 at 9:07 am

    @Aleta: Thread is probably dead, but IR is short for infrared, so I would speculate it is called a hot mirror because IR is the heat component of sunlight.

    @Tissue Thin Pseudonym: Likewise.

    The problem here isn’t so much ‘not acknowledging that people can be impaired or unusual or different’. Pretty sure the problem here is a non-zero proportion of the populace who figure that people that are impaired, unusual or different should be killed.

    Because Darwin, or fitness, or something.

    I am working on a counter-argument for that but it might take some time. There are no moral or logical arguments I can use against it, for the people who see things that way: they’re conditioned to bitterly cling to that belief, sometimes even when it means their own doom. They think it’s for the good of America, and don’t mind being flung into the meat grinder themselves when their usefulness flags.

    @jacy:

    The Supreme Court agreed that the First Amendment disallows the government from requiring any such thing.

    If it is a private school, perhaps they can do this. I would at least write a letter quoting the SC’s statement about J. Witnesses and the pledge of allegiance which was the context of their decision. So Google will be your friend. The decision was in regard to a WV statute.

    You can hardly claim to be requiring patriotism while at the same time denigrating the Supremes. Actually requiring patriotism is the antithesis of real patriotism.
