Lose $1 billion and don't pay taxes for 20 yrs and the GOP calls you smart.

Lose your job cuz of that guy and need help, you're a moocher.

Trump is a plunder capitalist. Appears big change in his life is going from blowing bankers' money to stealing from people w little wealth

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) October 2, 2016

By the way, @MarkHalperin pissed on the @nytimes Trump taxes scoop today on @MeetThePress. Old news, didn't prove anything, won't matter.

Apart from watching the Trumpster dumpster fire, what’s on the agenda as we wrap up the weekend?

He lost almost $1 billion in a single year, when he owned three casinos.

But YOU would have "squandered" his tax money. #MoneyBooBoo

I see Harry Reid continues to have no fucks left to give and that Mark Halperin continues to be a shameless GOP-fluffing hack. Always good to have some constants in life.

Also, how would one force a nominee to release their returns? Authorize the IRS to release them, I suppose?

    Next debate:

Trump: “…and our infrastructure, it’s like a third-world country, we don’t build anything great anymore, have you been to LaGuardia?”

Clinton: “Donald reminds me of the story of the man who murders his parents, and then wants mercy from the judge because he’s now an orphan. Donald, you lost nearly a billion dollars in 1995, and, as far as we know, paid $0 in Federal income tax since then. So if you don’t like our country’s infrastucture, why don’t you start putting a few dimes in the basket so we can make it better?”

Halperin is probably correct in that it won’t matter – as noted in a previous thread. Trump won’t really lose any support due to this. But it’ll put him further on tilt which will make his ability to close the gap to Clinton all but impossible.

@? Martin: Yeah, if he spends a week lashing out at all and sundry and conducting lineups of the staff in Trump Tower and so forth, that’s a whole 20% of the time remaining until election day. Could be more; as Trentrunner notes above, this is a perfect baseball bat for Hillary to club him with next Sunday.

Or the audience-questioners, for that matter. Could you imagine how Trump would react if a member of hoi polloi dares to question his finances in front of an audience of several tens of million people?

@Trentrunner: But it won’t matter in the sense that none of his supporters are likely to drop support due to this. If it does help win the election it won’t be because of the taxes, but because of the secondary effect that Trump is going completely fucking bananapants – which actually started with Machado and I’m guessing is going to continue with some new hit against him about every 5 days so he can never actually escape a news cycle. In that sense, you could have hit him with almost anything that would have had that effect.

This has probably already been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere, but it’s entirely possible Trump has dug himself a hole so deep that becoming President may be (this fucking word) literally the only way he can see to save himself. To come this far and then blow it would, especially if he is the narcissist he seems to be and feeling a giant pinch, most probably drive him around the bend. Well, further around the bend. Actually, maybe only Donald can tell us the lay of the land from that far around the bend.

Also even the people that might still vote for him, can be shamed into not evangelizing to their friends, not volunteering, not giving money. We can let Trumpers be Trumpers but we can also make them unwelcome in polite company. Stories like this do that.

I have a single “Clinton for President” yard sign in my yard. My neighbor across the street is an angry crazy-uncle type white-guy who has THREE Trump-Pence yard signs in his yard, one in each corner of his lot, one in the middle. I’ve decided that I am going to paste a ‘3’ in the upper-right corner on each side of my Clinton yard sign, in order to make it a Clinton-cubed yard sign. Hopefully, neighbors who got even as far as Algebra-2 in high school will get the nerdy math joke. (This is a decidedly upper-middle-class neighborhood, so chances are pretty good quite a few folks driving or walking by will get it).

@Karmus: I think his psycho-emotional state is already fragile because he is at some level already having to confront that he might not win. At the times and places in life when most people learn resilience from skinned knees, small losses, maybe even a few hard knocks, Trump was coddled, yes-manned, and also impacted by what sounds like a mean father who gave conditional love only to ‘winners.’

Losing the presidency may well break him. He also has to face that all the plates he has spun for years and years as a con man will probably start crashing. His life is far more examined, and the vast number of people he has screwed over are more emboldened than in his ‘reality’ TV pitchman years.

The long, long con always comes to an end. When the grifter outlives the con, it’s ugly for them. Add in Trump’s emotional frailty, and it’ll be spectacularly bad. Deserved, I think. But bad.

Made the mistake of turning on CNN, since MSNBC devolves into a sensationalist tabloid goo on weekends and I wanted some news on in the background while I cooked. The anchor had two guests to discuss the Trump tax disclosures, a Trump supporter and and Clinton supporter. The anchor’s idea of being fair and balanced was to ask the Trump supporter why this didn’t show that Trump was a failed businessman who avoids taxes, and he said it was actually all Clinton’s fault because “the politicians” wrote the tax code.

Then she turned to the Clinton supporter and said “Isn’t this Clinton’s fault? and spent the rest of the segment with everyone arguing about to what degree it was Clinton’s fault.

This was how the Trump tax story was covered.

Because clearly when Trump loses a billion dollars and avoids paying taxes for 20 years it’s Clinton’s fault, the only question was if it was all her fault or just some.

@James E Powell: I agree, and as long as there’s gonna be a wildcard, I like that there is now a second one so there can be a one-game playoff. Creates significant incentive to win the division outright, and eliminates the “who cares” end of seasons when two teams have clinched in a single division and at that point are just playing for home field advantage. Sadly, my team finished 21.5 games out this year. But there’s always next year! Good luck in the playoffs.

BOGOTA, Colombia— Colombian voters have rejected a peace deal with FARC rebels, a surprise outcome that risks prolonging a 52-year-old armed conflict, and in doing so tossed the peace process into chaos.

By a razor margin of 50.25 to 49.75 percent, voters rejected the peace deal, a Brexit-style backlash that few were expecting.

After nearly six years of negotiations, many handshakes and ceremonial signatures, Colombia’s half-century war is not over. Not even close.

Gradually try taking a pee pad with you if the first works n put on concrete on walk. Maybe try first when she signals she really has to go. Also try having her watch another dog do what you want, then put her in same place with the fresh smell. Maybe praise the sample dog?
I am trying to train my dog to go on a dog poddy in the house because I work too long. It has a drawer to catch the pee with cat pee crystals, artificial grass on top and you can buy training sent. He doesn’t have the idea yet comments say only 1/3 of pets learn this trick.

The Boeing also weighs more than 100,000 pounds, making it too heavy to land at many smaller airports, including one at Teterboro, N.J., the airport of choice for wealthy New Yorkers like Mr. Trump. Instead it must fly in and out of La Guardia Airport in Queens, which Mr. Trump, and others, have likened to what one might find in a third world country. La Guardia does offer a marketing perk: The 757 can often be seen at the airport, a billboard on wheels.

My set died a few years ago (all I had was an ancient little portable set anyway) and I was already at the point that I watched so little TV that it didn’t make sense to invest in new equipment and a cable or satellite subscription, especially as I was retiring and my income was becoming curtailed, and why spend the money? Occasionally I miss it, but mostly not. If I’m traveling, I’m happy to turn on MSNBC or CNN for a couple of hours, but I always end up convinced I made the right decision. If there’s a major speech or debate or something I want to see, I can stream it on the iPad and if I want to listen to live coverage but not watch, I have XM in the car.

Very bad news in Colombia: why turn it down? what do the people there think will happen now?

IOW, the same questions that came up after Brexit. Too many people are stone, stick, bone-deep stupid and mean. They’ve hugged their grievances so long the grievances are the only things that define them.

I don’t think Trump will win. As weird as it sounds, the US really is in better shape than most other places in the world. Our economy, hampered as it’s been through GOP intransigence, has still recovered better and more quickly than in Europe (including the UK) and Asia. Our body politic, as awful as it is, is still in better shape than Europe (so far, anyway).

So I’m hopeful — guardedly hopeful, I admit — our election result in November will be better than happened with Brexit and the peace treaty.

If I’m wrong, then the only thing left to say is, Where’s that meteor?

If she squats inside, run her outside. Beware that if you punish or frighten her she may just learn to potty in the house out of your sight. Eyes on her or she’s in her crate. Puppies sleep a lot (when they’re not maniacs) so she should be safely dry in her crate. It goes without saying that her crate should be her safe retreat and not jail…

Puppies are a lot of work, as you know. High value treats and lavish vocal praise are your friends. A happy safe place crate is imperative also too. Housebreaking (like all animal training) is as much about dog’s person training as about the dog.

You know, it occurs to me that this past couple of weeks was Trump trying to reach out to women and African American voters. This was clearly what his advisers told him he needed to do, and from some of the places he visited and things he said, it was clear that he was going to at least give it a go.

This past few weeks. That was him, trying to do that.

So imagine if he were elected and figured he didn’t need to give a shit about that anymore, what he’d be like then.

Take the scented pads out with you. I beg you not to use them indoors; dogs, especially pups, will develop a substrate preference and you don’t want it to be pee pads indoors.

    Let’s try again. Anatole France:

In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread.

My variant, which (like France) I use ironically but Giuliani attempted to use in all sincerity:

The tax law, in its majestic equality, permits the rich and poor alike to deduct their corporate jets.

@? Martin: I think it will hurt him a bit with some blue collar whites in the rust belt states, and may push his ceiling down to 42%. But 35% of the voting public does not care that Trump does not pay taxes. They think they should not pay taxes, at least if there are any Democrats in power. They want Trump because he is an authoritarian, racist, misogynistic, sociopath who will blow up the U.S. Constitution. Those are the traits they love because they believe Trump will put not just Hilary in jail, but Bill, Barack, Michelle, most Democratic office holders, climate change scientists, Blacks, Hispanics, and liberals in jail as well. After all Rush, Fox, Sean, Laura Ingraham, and Ann Coulter have be calling us traitors and engaging in treason for 30 years since the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine by Reagan. Now about another 5 to 10% are thinking of Trump as their big FU to the establishment as Michael Moore said on Meet the Press today and the tax thing may give them pause to realize Trump in charge of the U.S. Government will essentially be the same as reviving Caligula and making him President of the United States.

I don’t view the Colombian vote as necessarily a bad result. The deal would have let all FARC members stay out of jail – with no prosecutions despite decades of killings and thousands of victims – if they merely made a statement admitting guilt. Imagine negotiating an agreement with the Bundys that granted a general amnesty or worse, an agreement like that with ISIS or Al Qaeda. It would also have allowed FARC immediate status as a legitimate political party, with the possibility of winning near-term elections and forming a government or leading local or state governments. The opponents want a “better” deal – I think they should be allowed to express that preference if a referendum is called. Now, granted, it seems silly even to have a referendum, but given that the government wanted to make political hay out of it and they quickly scheduled it, citizens are entitled their political views. FARC has now said that they will continue to seek peace (as will the government) so maybe a re-negotiation is possible. Maybe with a South African-style public Truth and reconciliation Commission; maybe with something less than a general amnesty.

Can you imagine if Clinton’s stump “speech” was anything like Trump’s.

Clinton: (After 90 seconds of scripted delivery she suddenly heads off on a free-wheeling discussion of Trump’s sex life.) “A lot of people are saying that Donald made weekly visits to the health department back in the 70s and 80s. It seems they had a standing order for STD tests. He may even have simply been getting weekly antibiotic shots, since with all the sex he was having the odds were good that sooner or later — probably sooner — he was going to catch something. I don’t know, but a lot of people are saying that. And it’s not hard to believe. ‘

Some people even think that his lack of impulse control and his rage-tweeting are a sign of tertiary syphilis eating away at his brain. Everyone agrees it’s a possibility. If so, we can’t really blame him for his behavior, but do we want him in the White House? I don’t think so.

And, have you seen the way he ogles and fondles Ivanka? Is that all that’s ever gone on? Has it always stopped there? Or has Donald crossed a line? Some people think so.

Donald doesn’t have any pets, but there are rumors that he tortured puppies when he was a teenager. Now, everyone knows that’s a sure sign of a future serial killer. So, we need to ask Donald, why no pets and what exactly did happen to little Muffy, the neighbors’ Pekinese?

    And so on…

Ditto, although in my case, the fact that the year has been spent back in job-hunting mode with no success is surely contributing plenty to the overall gloom about this year.

The thing about our election particularly, though, is that win or lose, Trump has re-mainstreamed a kind of racism that’s more blatant and overt than people have dared to use at the presidential level in decades, and he really hasn’t lost a lot over it – in terms of popular support, the vast majority of Republican voters have stood by him. That means that even if he loses, the GOP will remain defined by his voters and his legacy.

So, yeah. Knock on wood, I’ll be relieved in November and he’ll lose. If not, well, as someone else said, bring on the meteor. But even if so, we’ll be fighting what he’s done for years to come.

The leading questions, thankfully, are mostly sane, maybe just a little Purity-Lefty, which is fine. Hillary can explain her positions about fracking well if given the chance. That same question asks how to increase green energy, which Trump is against. He’ll look like a… actually, why am I assuming he will answer the questions at all? 50/50 he ignores them and goes off on deranged rants about Hillary’s fictitious infidelities.

@PhoenixRising: Also—note, I’m not a dog person, but I did go through some training for a shelter—the trick with city dogs is to go out front of the building, wait for the dog to do his or her business, and then go walk an empty dog. The reason is that to the dog, the walk is the best part, the big reward. This trains the dog to take care of the messy part first.

(It’s easier with poop than pee since the dogs like to use the latter for pee-mail: keeping up with neighborhood events.)

Yawn. I have no fondness for FARC, because whatever reason they had for their rebellion, they seem to be fighting just for the sake of fighting now, but your description leaves out all the people murdered by the paramilitaries.

There was another left-wing movement that gave up fighting and decided to work peacefully. (Forget the name.) It’s utterly amazing how many of them were subsequently killed in the ensuing years, despite having laid down weapons.

I’ve got a cheater TDI Golf Sportwagen that I will sell back within two years. If the All Track is nice I might look into it.

Not a fan of plastic body cladding but it might offer enough extra to be worthwhile. The Golf Sportwagen is a pretty awesome vehicle that’s not as dull and boring as a typical CUV while offering more cargo room than about 3/4 of the CUVs on the market.

Also, it has a fantastic interior for a non-luxury car.

    @Omnes Omnibus:

You oughta be here in a battleground state. The two ads that I’ve seen 100 too many times are:

    1) Pat Ptoomey’s anti-McGinty ad that says Katie MeGinty sold us all out to take a high paying job in an industry that got state and ax breaks after working as Chief of Staff for the governor. The salary? $125k per year. Yeah, I don’t really see that as out of bounds for a salary. Not when Ptooeymey’s worth millions made on Wall Street.

    2) I never thought I’d say this because it’s a great and very effective ad, the Clinton “Mirrors” ad. This is simply because it seems to be one of every three ads. And one of the other two is one that highlights Hilz’s lifelong commitment to children and their issues. Trump is barely visible among ad buys, with more Club for Growth or some offshoot running more Trump ads than he is. Both Clinton ads are terrific, but I can’t watch them any more. I almost have the narration memorized, involuntarily.

Paramilitaries who, if I recall correctly, were responsible for the bulk of the crimes committed in the civil war; and the vast majority of whom also escaped justice after demobilization (although a few of the high-ups were at least extradited to the U.S). Lots of them currently continue on as petty gangsters and drug dealers, which in quite a few cases is what they were before, too. Uribe’s opposition to the FARC peace talks was slammed by a few people as hypocritical because he was quite happy to negotiate with the AUC and let them down easy.

I had my doubts about the peace process, first because of the precedent of left-wing guerrillas laying down their arms only to be murdered, and second because of how loud and strong Uribe’s movement has been in opposing the treaty. Sad that it should be the ballot box of all things that kills it.

(To be fair, though, the hypocrisy is Uribe’s and his peeps, not Patroclus’ – he raises a valid point about the fact that this would, indeed, involve letting a lot of trained killers walk, and as the AUC demobilization showed, that’s not the end of the story. It is, however, a common enough resolution in those kinds of civil wars, and is often viewed as the least bad option).
