Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Battle won, war still ongoing.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

In my day, never was longer.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Republicans in disarray!

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

#JuggaloMarch and Trump supporters both marching. One is a group of people who worship an insane clown, the other is a group of Juggalos

— Reeeeee-diculous (@slazear1) September 16, 2017

The Hill is… game:

Fans of the hip-hop group Insane Clown Posse descended on Washington, D.C., on Saturday for a “Juggalo March” to protest the FBI classifying them as a gang.

The fans, nicknamed Juggalos, are holding a march and concert on the National Mall to protest a 2011 FBI report that classified fans of the group as a “loosely-organized hybrid gang.”

The march’s website includes personal tales of fans being fired from their jobs, stopped and detained by police and losing custody battles for being Juggalos, wearing band merchandise or having the band’s trademark “hatchet man” tattoo, a silhouette of a man wielding an axe…

Daniel Dale, ace reporter for the Toronto Star, seems to be having the time of his life…

The Juggalo March is definitely the first protest where I've said I'm a reporter and people have tried to hug me

Iraq vet Travis King: "The government that I helped to fund and support is calling me a gang member because of a genre of music we love." pic.twitter.com/wugZmyf5DD

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 16, 2017

Speaker: The gang classification is "based on shockingly little facts or precedent."

Juggalos chant: "They fucked up! They fucked up!"

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 16, 2017

Next speaker says her Air Force commanders let her keep her Juggalo tattoo but told her she couldn't associate with other "gang" members.

Jugalette Laura King calls for solidarity from non-fans. "Today," she concludes, "we are all clowns."

Do you know what Dolly Parton looks like today? I’m sure Jennifer Grey looks different too. Apparently this is more important than any discussion we could have.

Now I wasn’t sure about anything involving white people in black clothes (for the greater good, anyone?) their whoop whoop at the removal of Confederate participation statues makes me think they’ll be alright.

Wagstaff: And let that be a lesson to every one of you! This school was here before you came, and it’ll be here before you go. (Knocking a human skull off the desk.) And you too, you numbskull! (Baravelli and Pinky race back in, this time molesting the same girl before taking their seats. Wagstaff pulls down a screen showing an anatomical view of a man). Let us follow a corpuscle on its journey. (Puts on his cap, grabs his briefcase, and starts to leave. Stops suddenly.) Oh, my mistake, I thought I was a corpuscle. As you know, there is constant warfare between the red and white corpuscles. Now then, baboons, what is a corpuscle?

Baravelli: That’s easy! First isa captain, then isa lieutenant, then isa corpuscle.

Wagstaff: That’s fine. Why don’t you bore a hole in yourself and let the sap run out? (Gesturing to screen.) We now find ourselves among the Alps. The Alps are a very simple people, living on a diet of rice and old shoes. Beyond the Alps lies more Alps. And The Lord Alps those that Alps themselves. We then come to the bloodstream. The blood rushes from the head, down to the feet…gets a look at those feet, and rushes back to the head again. This is known as auction pinochle. (Dashes to take a bite of apple. While his back is turned, Pinky pulls down a screen in front of the anatomical view. This screen shows a horse.) Now in studying your basic metabolism, we first listen to your heart speed. And if your hearts beat anything but diamonds and clubs, it’s because your partner is cheating…or your wife. Now, ah, now take this point for instance. (Points to horse’s rear end.) That reminds me. I haven’t seen my son all day. Well, the human body takes many strange forms. (Goes back to the first screen and points to it.) Now, here is a most unusual organ. The organ will play a solo immediately after the feature picture. (Goes back to the apple and Pinky hangs a scantily-clad pinup over the screen.) Scientists make these deductions by examining a rat, or you landlord who won’t cut the rent, and what do they find? Asparagus. (Goes back to screen, pointing to pinup.) Now, on closer examination…Hmm, this needs closer examination. In fact, it needs a nightgown. Baravelli! Who’s responsible for this? Is this your picture?

NEW YORK—Trump administration officials said Saturday the U.S. wouldn’t pull out of the Paris Agreement, offering to re-engage in the international deal to fight climate change, according to the European Union’s top energy official.

The shift from President Donald Trump’s decision in June to withdraw to renegotiate the landmark accord or craft a new deal came during a meeting of more than 30 ministers led by Canada, China and the European Union in Montreal.

@Duane: I think the ICP is considered a gang because cops… they like things to be in categories. Group or people, with common tattoos – must be a gang.

I used to run with a group called the Hash House Harriers. They called themselves “a drinking group with a running problem”. Their runs were basically a game of hares and hounds, where the fast runners (the hares) would get a head start and leave a trail, typically a sawdust/flour mixture, for the other runners (hounds, or harriers) to follow. The trail always ended someplace where they could have some beers. After 9-11 somebody spotted a pile of white powder from the trail marks and called 911. Cops freaked out, despite explanations; probably because the explanation did not fit their categories.

I used to have a very snobbish attitude against country music and country singers. It’s still not my favorite genre, but it was Dolly Parton whose songs made me realize that there were some great tunes and lyrics. From her to Johnny Cash and lots of others…. Still, as I say, not a genre I’m entirely comfortable with, but I recognize the appeal. And I completely admire Dolly for her literacy activism.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

The White House pushed back on Saturday against reports in the Wall Street Journal and Agence France Presse (AFP) that President Donald Trump has decided not to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, the Hill said.

“There has been no change in the United States’ position on the Paris agreement. As the President has made abundantly clear, the United States is withdrawing unless we can re-enter on terms that are more favorable to our country,” said an afternoon statement from White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters.

The administration was responding to an announcement by the European Union’s chief climate officer Miguel Arias Canete, who said at a summit in Canada that he’d received word from a Trump administration official that Trump is softening his stance on withdrawing the U.S. from the accord into it can be re-negotiated.

    @HeleninEire:

There is a little-known, but really wonderful, opera called Opéra d’Aran, by the French pop singer/composer Gilbert Bécaud, which has a lovely, haunting, traditional-sounding song sung by an old, I think blind, harpist at a pivotal moment in the plot. It has a repeating chorus “At the ball of Galway/In the Bay of Galway.”

I’ll try to track it down on YouTube and post a link. This opera should be much better known. Should be part of the standard repertoire, in fact. It is amazing.

So I hear thew REAL rally — not that gang-member thing — had something like 150,000 attendees (plus-or-minus three orders of magnitude). I bet Lying Littledick was pleased as all get-out that HIS rally was yuuuuuger than the Juggalo Fest. And it DEFINITELY had more people show up than That Black Guy from Kenya’s Mother of All Rallies, right?

One wonders if there’s yet another Littledick tweetstorm on the horizon.

I was not impressed by Portland the last time I visited. We went through a neighborhood in Northeast Portland where the city had allowed the streets to fall apart to the point they were effectively unpaved. If you crossed a major street into the next neighborhood, they went back to being fine. I can’t say for sure, but it definitely give the impression that the government doesn’t think the residents of the area deserve the same level of city services everyone else gets.

    in that case

    B) Re-read my first line, especially the “plus-or-minus” part

[And, in case it’s not a term you’re familiar with: an “order of magnitude” means a factor of ten. So 15,000 is an order of magnitude smaller than 150,000. Sincere apologies if you already know all this.]

@Wapiti: Nah, ICP fans got targeted because the bluesuits consider them “trash”, and by cop standards “white trash” is barely a circle on the target beyond “uppity person of color”. In some ways, the Juggalos are even MOAR threatening to the cops, because a lot of the worst offenders have close relatives who are “white trash” — welfare-dependent, substance-abusing, dangerous-to-decency “trailer lifers” that constantly remind angry white LEOs that they’re one or two bad decisions away from the same awful fate.

Besides, calling ICP groupies White Gangsters means they’re totally *not* racist, even if they consider a Black reporter with a camera more dangerous than a mob of rage-addled “Oaf Keepers” with guns. Remember: It’s not the cops’ job to create disorder — it’s their job to preserve disorder!

I was a punk in my youth, but fell in love with Dolly Parton’s music back when your choices were vinyl, cassettes or 8 tracks. Patsy Cline got me interested in country music (my gateway drug), but the real deal, not the bad pop music that passes for it nowadays. Still love it……and jazz, and classical, and Afropop, and all sorts of other genres.
