A question: What should I make for dinner? It’s been a long week, and I’m not up for cooking something elaborate this evening. But I can’t push the chore off on the mister because he’s been building a fence all day. Nor can I in good conscience order out since we’ve been doing way too much of that lately. I’m thinking something like baked ziti but am entertaining other ideas.
Other than that, I got nothing. Open thread!

Bachelor sandwiches: Open fridge, put anything you find between slices of bread.
Slightly more classy: Limit your search to things that seem reasonable put between slices of bread.
Even more classy: Put cheese on it and toast in the oven or toaster oven, if you have one.
So classy I can hardly stand it: In addition to toasted sandwich, drop a head of lettuce into a bowl and tell hubby it’s a salad. Some assembly required.
My wife has an astonishing imagination for thinking up ways to use whatever is in the fridge/freezer/cabinets and throwing together these amazing multi-course meals. Greeted with the same pantry, I have a lot less imagination and energy. I’m better as the sous-chef.

Cheap leftover frittata in cast iron. Cut up bacon, ham, chicken, shrimp – any non beef protein. Brown onions and garlic in skillet while whipping eggs with a tablespoon of baking powder and a handful or two of flour, seasoned with salt, pepper and hot sauce. Throw a handful or two of lettuce or some other greens in long enough to wiltx then put in you egg mix, bake for about 35 min.

Generally when I need something quick, I saute veggies and meat of choice (usually chicken) – but if I remember right, you’re vegetarian – so veggies it is – in olive oil, basil, oregano, salt, pepper, garlic. Boil up some pasta, add about 1 ladle of pasta water to veggie mix to give it some sauciness. Drain pasta, toss together with veggies, top with Parmesan and dinner. 15 minutes tops. If you’ve got some crusty bread, all the better.

Grill out, since you’re in Florida..
1) pork chops marinated in Teriyaki
2) (also for grilling) on a sheet of tinfoil thinly lubricated with olive oil, finely slice an apple (cutting out the core). Liberally sprinkle cinnamon on the apple, lightly sprinkle nutmeg, optionally add a few berries of some sort, or dried cranberries. Mix and then wrap the apple etc. as tightly with just the tinfoil as you can, and then wrap a second layer of tinfoil around the first layer (you want to seal in the liquids from the apple) – depending on how thin or thick your chops are, you might want to put the foiled apples on the grill 2-3 minutes earlier than the chops, at the same time, or 2-3 min later, but this is hard to ruin unless you overdo it to the point of drying out the apples.
3) Fix a sumptuous salad course (mixed spring greens, tomato, mushroom, bell pepper, olives, feta cheese, spicy oil & vinegar dressing with some red pepper flakes, preferably made with balsamic vinegar. Sit out and eat the salad course while the chops and apples are grilling.
4) Vanilla ice cream sprinkles with blueberries for dessert. If you want to get a bit decadent and have a banana and some liquor (Kahlua, Frangelico, whatever) sautee the banana in a small pat of butter + liquor – sautee at least until the bananas start to get soft, serve over the ice cream warm or cook, to taste.

See what vegetable ends & bits you have in the fridge. Saute in butter, parboiling tough stuff like broccoli or carrots a bit first. Throw in some garlic. If you’ve got tomatoes, keep them until the end. Toss them in and cook briefly. Boil, drain & butter some spaghetti. Grate some cheese over it & toss with salt & pepper. Pour the vegetables over the pasta & toss again. Voilà, Dinner. You can have salad & bread with it if you’re feeling fancy. And wine. Wine is good. Mine tonight has muchrooms, onion, carrots, celery & green beans. Heavy on the mushrooms. If I find a stray bell pepper, that will go in as well.

Georgia GOP pushes elimination of Sunday voting to suppress black turnout
The proposal would also shorten voting hours in Atlanta.
KIRA LERNER
MAR 16, 2018, 1:56 PM
Georgia Republicans are advancing a bill through the state legislature that would suppress African-American turnout by eliminating Sunday voting and cutting the hours that polls are open in Atlanta.
The bill, SB 363, would force polls in the majority African American city of Atlanta to close an hour earlier — 7 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. — and would eliminate early voting on the Sunday before Election Day. That Sunday is often a high-turnout day for African American voters because of Souls to the Polls events that encourage people to cast ballots early after attending church.
The proposal passed the state House Governmental Affairs Committee Wednesday with the majority Republicans voting in favor and all five Democrats, who have said the legislation is designed to suppress voter turnout, in opposition.
The text of the bill limits voting to just one weekend day before an election, but under current state law, any election with state or federal candidates must allow voting on a Saturday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Georgia Republicans have opposed Sunday voting since at least 2014, when DeKalb County (home to Atlanta) extended early voting to include the Sunday before Election Day. One polling location that year was at a popular local shopping mall.

Martha’s Garlic Shrimp
The hardest part is peeling the shrimp, unless you get them already peeled, in which case the hardest part is slicing the garlic, and obviously neither of those things is hard. If you don’t need to peel the shrimp, less than 10 minutes start to finish. If you do, it’s a bit longer.
Either serve over rice or cut up some bread to soak up any of the stray liquid at the end.

Avengers Infinity Wars Official Poster
I showed this to my sis and she was like why is Iron Man all big and centered on the poster. Me and nephew was like…cause this whole MCEU started from Iron Man…and 10 years later, here we are…with Marvel doing what DC and other movie studios and comic book houses are still trying to do, and doing it badly.
Lot of talk after viewing the trailer about who’s gonna survive Infinity Wars. My 2cents…Trilogy Contracts are up for Hemsworth, Evans and RDJ. They are attached to the 4th Avengers film, but they don’t HAVE to survive Infinity Wars to make an appearance in the last Avengers film. Based on who’s trilogy is done, I’d lay bet that Iron Man, Capn America and Thor are ALL up for elimination…their triologies are done. Added to the list is Vision in some form, thx to the infinity stone in his head…but my money is on one of the big 3 to die.

Maybe she’ll furrow her brow once or twice with concern before her “aye” vote for Haspel.

I am on mild lockdown, avoiding the trailer and general discussion about the movie, but OK if I accidentally run across something. A couple of co-workers have already ordered tickets. When the first Avengers movie was released, they attended the 6 hour Marvel Marathon. Too many movies to endure the 30 hour marathon scheduled here and there.
I am looking forward to seeing the movie, but I am wondering a bit how they will manage to give each of the 100 superheroes in the film sufficient screen time.
Wakan … wait … Avengers Assemble!

@Brachiator: so I’m really glad that this kind of storytelling is being given room to breathe and a huge budget, but god, I haven’t seen anything since Doctor Strange (or was it Civil War) and I don’t really feel like catching up either. Some day!

@NotMax:
I’m one of those who believe that, with a few exceptions, the movie is what is released in theaters, not the DVD version.
And I’m not big on 3D most of the time, but I would love it if parts of the movie was actually conceived in 3D and included shots of groups of heroes doing stuff in the foreground, and other groups of heroes doing stuff in other parts of the same shot. Or characters starting in one plane of action and diving into another plane of action.
@Major Major Major Major:
Sadly, I realize that I have seen almost all the prior films, but I lost my notes. :) I really haven’t kept up with the details. Mainly I think it will be fun to see the various heroes from the different films team up with the core of the Avengers.
But the run time is supposedly 2 and a half hours. A chunk of time, but still….
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Kelly dropped his script. He’s supposed to be outraged at trump’s treatment of Tillerson, and that’s why he’s trying to push out McMaster, who undermined Tillerson with NORK. Supposed to be some kind of rough barracks humor, or…
… is Kelly just a big asshole humiliating Tillerson further for the amusement of some other even bigger asshole who would love this kind of detail. Whosoever might that be?

@Ninedragonspot: I’ll have to try that sometime.

@Brachiator: I know right…but if anyone can do it, I guess the Russo bros can…they did REALLY well with Civil War.
But with ALL those characters, you gotta think that it just can’t be done, but they will pack the film with just enough action sequences, corss movie interactions, and character death arcs (at least on screen) and hopefully a truly good villain in Thanos, that it won’t be a bunch of too much…ya know.
I saw someone post something about AMC or something running a marathon of Marvel movies the day before or days before Infinity Wars? I’m wait…the theatre or the tv network? Cause who da hell wants to sit in a theatre for 30 hours straight?
It must be AMC the network?

@Matt McIrvin: oh yeah, maybe that’s what I’ll do tomorrow.

See, that doesn’t do it for me. Fan service doesn’t work if I don’t know who everybody is and why the situation is special!
Matt McIrvin
@lamh36: I’m kind of sick of Iron Man; it was kind of novel to have a douchey superhero like that for a little while, but the series didn’t seem to take his character arc seriously–it’d imply that he was having profound life-changing experiences and then he’d be acting exactly the same way in the next movie. If the MCU sees him off soon, I’m fine with that.

Just a bunch of dopes. Kelly has exhibited all kinds of crass behavior before. I will also bet that Trump eats this shit up. He revels in humiliating the people who work for him. Why would anyone think that the people he hand picks to be at his side would be any different?

@Matt McIrvin: I have a soft spot for RDJ…and that translates to a soft spot for Tony….besides…he is where it all began…and I gotta say, I still love the first IronMan…more than I love the first Capn America or Thor film (Civil War and Ragnorak are my fav of those trilogies)
It’ll be sad seeing RDJ leave Tony behind, but I think he still loves to play the character, so I see him being willing to make cameos in other “Avenger” films, like he did for Spiderman: Homecoming. I also think Chris Evan, still kinda likes playing Cap’n America, by like RDJ, Evans hasn’t been missing any acting works since becoming linchpins in the MCEU. The one who I think who’s kinda tired of the charcter play is Hemsworth, he unlike Evans and RDJ, is still trying to find his niche OUTSIDE of the MCEU, and to be quite honest, it hasn’t worked. Ragnorak DEF worked, and he was one of the better parts of the Ghostbusters movies…my money says he should get focused on a comedy vehicle, but as Ragnorak and Ghostbusters, and his BTS Thor antics seem to show he’s got good comic timing…

Yes, and the most important way to make decisions in 2018 is to look at decisions people made 17 years ago and absolutely nothing after that. Good choice!

@oldgold: I think Kelly is daring trump to actually fire him…face to face, in person. And he knows trump is too much of a coward to actually do it.
Adding that it was probably a trump ordered slap at Tillerson, but probably a Kelly initiated smear on an unfit cokehead of trump’s choice…

@Major Major Major Major:
Black Panther really is an excellent movie purely as a movie — more James Bond than Superman.
Brachiator
@schrodingers_cat:
Pundits and others kept expecting Trump to turn into a traditional president. And yet, you would see Trump not only become more relaxed and defiant at his rallies, you would always see him get juiced up by the crowd and revel in the worst of his so-called agenda. And anyone paying attention would see how Kelly and anyone who wanted to keep their job had to play into Trump’s viciousness, his cruelty.
And Kelly was a piece of crap in his previous post, and he was particularly nasty when he insulted that female member of Congress. Here of course, we may also have signs of the press falling into their own sexism and racism, and paying no attention to bad behavior if it involves a white man disrespecting a woman or a person of color.
It is pointless to try to find someone with a sense of honor or decency within the Trump administration.

Even as a comic book, an Avengers special with a raft of superheroes would be expected to try to showcase as many of them as possible. The movie would only be expected to do some of the same thing. Hell, I want to see more of the characters from The Black Panther in this film. Otherwise, what would be the point?

If they managed to stuff a cameo of them into this film, I would laugh my ass off. And salute with my John Steed umbrella.

Refrigerator pie. (Which I learned as I grew older was properly called quiche.) Pick compatible food stuffs out of the refrigerator or pantry and rough chop to bite size sufficient to half-fill a 9-inch pie-pan. Beat two eggs till slightly frothy, [edit – stir in half a cup of heavy dairy of choice], add 1-2 cups of shredded cheese of choice, and pour over chopped foodstuff.
Bake in a medium oven till the eggs set – use a knife test. (translation. Bake at about 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes. Test by inserting the end of a clean knife about 1/3 of the way out from the center – if it comes out clean the eggs are set.) Pull and let it finish setting for 5, preferably 10 minutes.
I have discovered things that have become family favorites by randomly grabbing this and that. Chopped apples, bacon, ham, onion, and a bit of cranberry sauce with cheddar for the cheese being an example.
Or … I’m home alone on a staycation while the wife is gone, so this weekend I’ll be making my guilty pleasure. Limburger cheese on toasted rye with garlic sausage, a strong mustard and sauerkraut all strong enough to hold their own against the cheese. I can only have it when I’ll be alone for a few hours so as to air the house and cleanse my breath. But oh how I enjoy it.
