Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Consistently wrong since 2002

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bark louder, little dog.

Everybody saw this coming.

If you didn’t have a chance over the weekend to read Adam Davidson’s “Michael Cohen and the End Stage of the Trump Presidency” in the New Yorker, it drew a lot of comment on social media. Here’s some of his response:

There are tipping points in which public opinion flips, dramatically. And the core national narrative changes.

I believe that, eventually, more Americans will take in the truth of Trump. I think that Cohen's emails and phone calls will rapidly advance that process.

3.

— Adam Davidson (@adamdavidson) April 15, 2018

I don't know if Trump will be impeached. I find it highly unlikely he'd win reelection but he might.

That being said, I think that he is already in something of a lame duck phase. His presidency is, already, in some ways, over.

5.

— Adam Davidson (@adamdavidson) April 15, 2018

Some of the phrases that will come out in reference to Trump's business partners and will become part of our national media diet:
– Terror financing.
– WMD proliferation.
– Sex trafficking.
– Murder.
– Boring old stuff like bribery, sanctions violations, money laundering.

— Adam Davidson (@adamdavidson) April 15, 2018

Canadian pundit (& TNR editor) Jeet Heer adds:

4. Reading @rickperlstein excellent The Invisible Bridge (about Watergate & Reagan), I was struck by role televised hearings played in changing public opinion.

— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) April 15, 2018

Counterpoint from a cynic:

Mitch McConnell will still be leading chants of 'Gorsuch! Gorsuch! Gorsuch!' when the Super Bowl halftime show gets hacked by the pee tape.

hey…FPers…this deserves a music thread dontcha think?

Kendrick Lamar becomes first Hip Hop artist to win Pulizter Prize in Music for his album “DAMN”

Here’s how they came about the decision…

Pulitzer Prize Administrator Explains How Kendrick Lamar Won

    …Was the debate intense?

Oh absolutely, always, in any category. You’d be amazed if you watched these juries at work; they take seriously every bit of work they consider. In this case, I don’t know specifically what the piece was, but in this case they were considering a piece of music they felt had hip-hop influences and said, “Well if we’re considering a piece of music that has hip-hop influences, why aren’t we considering hip-hop?” And someone said, “That’s exactly what we should do.” And then someone said, “We should be considering Kendrick Lamar” and the group said “absolutely.” So then, right then, they decided to listen to the entire album and decided “This is it.”…

Loser stink. Looking like a loser is one of the few things that can really sink him with his base. Their #1 demand in politics is for their guy to own the liberals. Watching the liberals own Trump badly enough will be enough to turn him into a RINO.

Actually I believe that they have committed to returning Wynn’s money if he is found guilty in a court of law, but until then…not so much.

Incidentally, this is Wynn’s argument over being accused of leering:

Wynn’s lawsuit calls the allegations false. His attorney accuses Bloom of intentionally ignoring that Wynn was “legally blind” when she alleges the leering occurred.

If all this stuff was in a movie people would get up and leave because it was so implausible.

What will it take for Trump’s base to abandon him (and thus give GOP opening to support impeachment & removal)? I think the answer might well be: televised hearings.

More projection and wishful thinking. Let’s hear from one of Trump’s base, someone who knows him up close and personal.

On Monday, the Daily Mail published an account from former Playmate Barbara Moore, who told the British tabloid she had an affair with Trump for six months in 1993, when Trump was engaged to marry Marla Maples, who was pregnant with their daughter Tiffany.

She, and maybe other women like her, see him as Sugar Daddy Supreme, and they withhold nothing from him, no matter what.

“But at the time I didn’t know he was with someone else, let alone engaged to Marla Maples, and it was only recently I learned she was pregnant at the time. This has shocked me, but I don’t hold it against Donald, he was a great lover and I think he’s a great president.”

Creepier still, women like this seem to see Trump as a great protector.

Moore, for her part, seems to harbor no ill will toward Trump, and said she voted for him in 2016:

“I love him as our president. I love him because it’s funny to me when he kind of puts his foot in his mouth.”

“I think he’s doing a great job and there’s more to come. I feel safe with him in charge.”

Yes, these people are stupid. Yes, they are deplorable. But they stand by their man. Maybe something may lead Trump’s base to abandon him, but I ain’t holding my breath.

Meantime, as many, many point out here, the majority of the country don’t swoon for the buffoon. The majority can knock out his support in the midterms and kick his ass out of the White House in 2020. If Team Mueller or other investigators can deal a blow in the meantime, yes, yes, yes.

Otherwise, talking about the end of Trump is about as empty as a Hannity denial.

One by one characters walk into the room and join the crowd in convincing him nobody cares that he’s still a virgin. He agrees and starts climbing down. Then Bull walks in asking “what’s the virgin doing in the window”.

OT This article from the Montreal Gazette won’t get much if any attention in the USA but maybe it should. Andre Bissonette, the Quebec mosque shooter, is being sentenced this week. He’ll get somewhere between 25 and 150 years.

The thing that might interest Americans, besides his MAGA hat selfie, is the list of Twitter feeds that he was following before the shooting. You’ll recognise the names, I’m sure, because they’re almost all American and they’re reaching the crazy people.

Scientists accidentally create mutant enzyme that eats plastic bottles

In better times, with more responsible leaders, this wouldn’t have worried me so much.

Scientists have created a mutant enzyme that breaks down plastic drinks bottles – by accident. The breakthrough could help solve the global plastic pollution crisis by enabling for the first time the full recycling of bottles.

The new research was spurred by the discovery in 2016 of the first bacterium that had naturally evolved to eat plastic, at a waste dump in Japan. Scientists have now revealed the detailed structure of the crucial enzyme produced by the bug.

The international team then tweaked the enzyme to see how it had evolved, but tests showed they had inadvertently made the molecule even better at breaking down the PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic used for soft drink bottles. “What actually turned out was we improved the enzyme, which was a bit of a shock,” said Prof John McGeehan, at the University of Portsmouth, UK, who led the research. “It’s great and a real finding.”

The mutant enzyme takes a few days to start breaking down the plastic – far faster than the centuries it takes in the oceans. But the researchers are optimistic this can be speeded up even further and become a viable large-scale process.

Lots and lots of modern day structures and products have plastic in them.

Lots and lots of modern day structures and products have plastic in them.

Yes, but that’s less important than you think:

    1) This affects one specific type of plastic, PETE, not all kinds of plastic generally. PETE is mostly used in drinking bottles and other food storage containers, and there are good ways of keeping a plastic-eating bacterium from destroying those before they can be used.

    2) There are bacteria that can digest all kinds of things we use as building materials. Wood, paper, and many kinds of fabric are made of cellulose, and there are cellulose digesting bacteria, but our wooden buildings haven’t collapsed and our libraries haven’t been eaten. Plastic eating bacteria may be a long-term worry, but we have experience dealing with biodegradable materials.

@Tilda Swintons Bald Cap: RWNJ twitter tells me Judge Kimba Woods presided at Soros’ wedding. Checkmate libtards

    The smear begins.

Kimba Wood was nominated by none either than…….Bill Clinton to be US Attorney General but was unfairly blocked due to nannygate. She did nothing illegal. But, expect her to be smeared for employing “illegals”. And somehow they will twist their own recursive logic to suggest that she is biased against Trump because she got screwed out of the USAG post. Also, too I’m sure numerous Russian trolls and their domestic counterparts are busily trying to find an email/Benghazi connection.

@different-church-lady: I’m with Roger Moore. The world is full of things that can digest wood, leather, and iron, but they are all still perfectly usable, often even for storing water. Plastic digesters will probably go slower than those existing ones, because plastics are generally impermeable and often hydrophobic, which will slow adhesion and enzymatic activity. Besides that, you can’t stop it. If protein plasticases are possible bacteria will almost certainly evolve them in short order.

Edit: Incidentally, an evolved nylonase has been known of for at least 2 decades, because I remember reading about it that long ago.

Comey is being raked over the coals on MSNBC as a self-absorbed egotist who could have avoided all of this by just following the rules. I liked the observation that he is a politician, and makes his decisions politically, which is the exact opposite of how he sees himself.
