Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Come on, man.

This fight is for everything.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

The willow is too close to the house.

Consistently wrong since 2002

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

“I do trust him, yeah,” Trump said. “Maybe in a year you’ll be interviewing and I’ll say I made a mistake. It’s possible. We’re dealing at a high level, a lot of things can change a lot of things are possible.”

Anyone who votes Republican is a fucking idiot, too.

Yeah, I give it about a year, until one of 2 things happens:

    1) We are all (country, globe, not sure which) totally fucked;

    2) Republican Party is totally fucked.

Primary elections today in Virginia and South Carolina and Maine and Nevada and North Dakota.

You know what you must do. I shall happily vote for a challenger to take on Dave Brat, the divinity M.A. and Ayn Rand acolyte who is also an economics professor. Le sigh. A little education can be muy dangerous in service of a wingnut. Brat’s claim to fame is knocking off Eric Cantor, from the right, and, somehow, being someone who can stand in front of a [n expensive private college] classroom as an econ professor but who cannot handle a TV interview.

@Roger Moore: Thanks to the both of you;they are idiots. I receive the NYT opinion daily email newsletter curated by David Leonhardt, a somewhat moderate progressive. In today’s edition there is this:

Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision on voting rights was another “Merrick Garland decision”— that is, a decision effectively made by the Senate’s refusal to let President Barack Obama fill a Supreme Court vacancy.
Obama nominated Garland, a widely respected, moderate judge, in 2016, and the Senate ignored the nomination. In Garland’s place, President Trump later nominated, and the Senate confirmed, the deeply conservative Neil Gorsuch. In yesterday’s case — on Ohio’s aggressive purging of its voter-registration rolls — Gorsuch provided the swing vote supporting Ohio’s policy.
There are going to be many more Merrick Garland decisions over the years, and each one is an injustice. They reward the Republican Party for its radical tactics. Yes, both parties deserve some blame for creating today’s extreme partisanship, but the Republican Party’s behavior has been significantly worse.

As I’m so tired of hearing and reading the”both sides are to blame” meme that I’d love it if someone did an actual scientific proof of it. To me it’s similar to being a victim of sustained verbal and/or physical abuse who finally pushes back and gets punished by the courts for doing so.

Russia is sometimes described as a nation with a medium-sized economy (an economy about the size of Italy or Spain) – but with nukes.

North Korea is an abyss – with nukes.

Trump said that he was honored to meet with the ruler of North Korea. He was impressed that the North Korean people are “hard working, industrious. They are full of fervor for their leader. . . [Kim] is going to be happy. His country does love him. You see the fervor; they have a great fervor. . .”

But the North Korean “industriousness” does not show up on camera. Not at night. Here is a NASA picture of the void that is North Korea, between South Korea and China.

Here is a National Geographic video, that is even more striking.

If you didn’t know that North Korea was there, you could totally miss the “energy bankrupt country” at night.
How can such a nation exist and survive?
By putting all the resources to the military and the dynastic rule of the Kim family.

And then – in pouring praise on Kim and his fervent people – Trump says: “. . . I think that if you look at South Korea someday, maybe in the not too distant future, it will be something like that.”

The bottom line is that you guys [apparently] want to spend that ridiculous amount of money on your military. Frankly, the rest of us don’t see the value in that and I never agreed with my government committing to upping the amount spent to 2% of our GDP. I will say this for Trump: he’s brilliant at trolling:

The former real estate tycoon said after a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he could imagine condominium developments on the hermit kingdom’s shoreline.

“They have great beaches. You see that whenever they’re exploding their cannons into the ocean. I said boy look at that, wouldn’t that make a great condo,” he said at a news conference after the summit in Singapore on Tuesday.

“And I said instead of doing that you could have the best hotels in the world right there. Think of it from a real estate perspective. You have South Korea, you have China and they own the land in the middle. How bad is that, right? It’s great.”

To summarize, North Korea got Trump to:
    – Give them their desired world stage
    – Avoid any discussion on human rights
    – End military exercises with South Korea
    – Hint at ending U.S. Forces Korea
    – Attack NATO and allies as cheap

In return, “dealmaker” Trump got nothing.

Remember those times he said he was moving military towards Korea in response to their missiles? Remember how it turned out to be flat-out lies? Talking big and not following through is Trump’s MO. It combines beautifully with another of his major traditions, saying whatever pops into his head, whether or not it’s true.

Trump has a history of not liking our being in South Korea. That doesn’t mean he’ll do anything about it. The man is lazy and terrified of push back. He can’t just sneak abandoning South Korea past his generals.

@schrodingers_cat: Yeah, I thought there were some very late in the year primaries.

Here’s someone who put himself above party, on our side, in South Carolina: per the WaPost:

There’s less drama than tragedy in the 5th Congressional District, which Democrats nearly won in a 2017 special election — before it was revealed that Archie Parnell, the party’s surprisingly adroit candidate, had once assaulted an ex-wife. Democrats urged him to quit, but Parnell released a statement asking for forgiveness and remained on the ballot. Whether or not Parnell wins, Democrats have effectively conceded the seat.

What a dipshit. In this year of GOP on the ropes and #metoo, Parnell should have gotten his assaulting ass out of the way. Not the year for that, although wouldn’t it be marvelous if he has a surprise win this November?

    Parnell is a white attorney.

    Per Mother Jones:

For the past year, Archie Parnell, a former Goldman Sachs managing director and former tax attorney for ExxonMobil, has been among the candidates the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee viewed as contenders to fulfill their dreams of a Blue Wave in the 2018 midterms. But last month, divorce records surfaced that show Parnell abused his ex-wife—a revelation that may cost Democrats the race.

Parnell, who is running for a House seat in South Carolina’s 5th District, has admitted to physically abusing his former wife in 1973, using a tire iron to break into an apartment where her friends were trying to protect her. He then struck her several times and beat her again later that evening. She sought a divorce and a restraining order against him.

Most of Parnell’s staff quit after they learned of the abuse, including campaign manager Yates Baroody. Trav Robertson, chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, called on Parnell to drop out of the race, saying “his actions, though long ago, directly contradict the values of the Democratic Party.” The DCCC also withdrew its support—a representative called Parnell’s abuses “inexcusable and deeply disturbing.”

But in a Facebook video posted to his campaign page June 6, Parnell resisted: “After much prayer and thought, I have concluded I should stay in this race.” He sought help after his violent outburst, he argued, and his marriage to his current wife gave him a second chance. “If I withdraw,” he said, “I would be telling anyone who makes a terrible mistake that that one terrible mistake will define them for the rest of their lives.”

…. If Parnell does prevail in the primary, he’ll face off against Rep. Ralph Norman, the Republican incumbent who defeated him a year ago. Norman is perhaps best known for pulling out a loaded .38-caliber handgun at a Rock Hill diner to demonstrate that “guns don’t shoot people; people shoot guns”—he then set the gun down on a table and continued his “coffee with the constituents” meeting. Afterward, he said, “I’m not going to be a Gabby Giffords,” referring to the Tucson congresswoman who was shot in the head during a meeting with constituents at a supermarket parking lot.

You know, I seriously believe in second chances, but look at how it played out in the Parnell case. He hid it, got broadsided during campaign, and a lot of his staff quit in protest.

I do believe that people can grow and change, and Mr. Parnell would have the moral ground if he was honest and forthcoming from the outset about how badly he behaved when he was younger, and how he regrets it and wants to do better for vulnerable women.

Mostly, stories like this one make me glad I don’t live in South Carolina, beautiful as the Palmetto State is.

I am actually brooding on after Trump. America has mostly kept it’s word in diplomacy and it’s been very valuable to us in a way that isn’t really viable until it’s gone. We are going to have to reaffirm our treaties and expect to be on probation with others for awhile after. I accepted that angrily but it’s just truth. However what about whatever Trump promises? I can’t even tell what he is promising, he usually promises both sides of everything if you wait 5 minutes, and I know everything he promises will not be in our best interests (yes both or all versions of his promises on any issue are all bad the way he does it). I don’t know that we can keep his promises if we can’t figure them out.

I thought he was a corrupt but otherwise useful idiot until he started saying Russia should be on the G7 and that Canada and Europe are our enemies. Now I am wondering if he is an actual Russian agent or an agent of the devil. It is a whole other level of shock to me. Also my 77 year old dad’s way of handling this is making bad jokes about it, the same ones over and over so that’s not helping.
