The idea that the huge death toll on Puerto Rico is "really no one's fault" rather than an urgent question for Congress to investigate through oversight is the perfect encapsulation of @SpeakerRyan utter abandonment of oversight role & any effort to hold Trump accountable https://t.co/AyndrkWuxi

— Ronald Brownstein (@RonBrownstein) September 13, 2018

Of course the Zombie-Eyed Granny Starver don’t care — he’s out the door already — but let’s keep reminding those “low info voters” that EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN would just as soon see them dead, as long as it didn’t interfere with the GOP crime spree going so well right now…

It would be interesting if there were, say, a Select Committee that gathered evidence to evaluate the thesis that 3,000 dead is "just what happened" https://t.co/pBPGtQsVfS

— Benjy Sarlin (@BenjySarlin) September 13, 2018

I wanna note that he told all of us this like 3 minutes after he stood literally right next to Paul Ryan while he addressed it. https://t.co/mRUs6TucMf

— Joe Perticone (@JoePerticone) September 13, 2018

Lindsey Graham would like to know where those Puerto Rico death toll numbers are coming from like he can’t read a newspaper.

— Schooley (@Rschooley) September 13, 2018

Dear every reporter: When you get this inevitable deflection, get in the habit of PUTTING YOUR HANDHELD GLOWING HELL SCROLL up to their face so they can f***ing see the tweet. https://t.co/AJwwSxyvn3

— zeddy (@Zeddary) September 13, 2018

Spoke to more than a dozen House Rs here at the Capitol. Very few had any criticism of the president's handling of the coming storm or his tweets on P.R. Most offered hearty praise. A revealing snapshot of the GOP.

— Robert Costa (@costareports) September 13, 2018

Reminder: after Katrina, Congress held NINE hearings to investigate the federal response and assess what went wrong.

With 3,000 dead in Puerto Rico from Maria, how many hearings have Republicans in Congress held? ZERO.

— Matt McDermott (@mattmfm) September 13, 2018

Bossert was there when the Trump admin was responding to Maria. https://t.co/PhzP7ho8VQ

— Abby D. Phillip (@abbydphillip) September 13, 2018

You know Trump's Puerto Rico conspiracy comments reached a new level when top 2 FL defenders, Gov. Rick Scott & Ron DeSantis, (mildly) rebuked the remarks.

DeSantis "doesn't believe any loss of life has been inflated"

Scott: "I disagree with @POTUS"https://t.co/Jkv25hulH1

— Marc Caputo (@MarcACaputo) September 13, 2018

Hillary said this to me last year. She was correct. https://t.co/ic79B6r6iV

— Zerlina Maxwell (@ZerlinaMaxwell) September 13, 2018

At some point, probably not today cuz she's also a coward, Sarah Huckabee Sanders will read a list of reverse-engineered BS reasons of why 3000 Americans didn't die from profound neglect in Puerto Rico. And she'll do it in the aggrieved monotone of a Carl's Jr customer complaint.

— zeddy (@Zeddary) September 13, 2018

If the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico had been named Hillary:

– Trump would swear the death toll was 7 billion people

– Congress would have subpoenaed wind, rain, the Atlantic Ocean and Hillary Clinton by now

I’ll just say what I just said, which is there is no reason to dispute these numbers. This is a devastating riot that hit an isolated embassy in Libya. And that’s really no one’s fault. It’s just what happened.

Been following Florence coverage on Twitter since 4:30am my time. 185K people without power in NC. 200 people already rescued in New Bern. 150 awaiting rescue. People stuck in attics and on roofs. 22 + inches of rain recorded in Atlantic Beach. Storm moving at 6mph and has basically stalled. Eyewall just approaching Wilmington, NC as we speak.

@Quinerly: @NotMax: Agree to both. The problem is going to be the duration of the storm. Read a report that says the Lumbee River in Columbus County is not going to crest until Tuesday at levels higher than Hurricane Matthew which absolutely devastated the county when that happened. No idea how bad it is going to get this time. This is not going to be a quick disaster, it is going to go on for days. Also the storm is only moving at 6mph. For all intents and purposes it has stalled.

@JPL: I have reason to be familiar with Carteret County’s stormwater handling system and their disaster plan, at least up to about ten years ago. Quinerly said above that Middle Street never floods; there’s a reason for that. You will not find a group of politicians more dedicated to handling the threat of too much water.

This is … unanticipated, even for the professionals.

@Litlebritdifrnt: This looks to be more like Floyd when that storm just sat and churned water for days. I actually road out Matthew at Pine Knoll Shores 2 years ago. Only lost power on Bogue Banks for a few hrs after the sun came out the next day. Severe flooding an hr inland in Craven and Pitt counties around Vanceboro and the town I grew up in, Grifton. That also was the flood pattern with Floyd, as I recall.

Company I worked for back then had a second office in New Bern. Senior engineer with them retired to there and interfaced with the local government for us.

I’ll grant I’m mostly familiar with the town through their stormwater plans….

I was telling people earlier this week, as the forward speed reduced and it started to spread out, that this would be another Floyd.

@Quinerly: Floyd was awful. I was at the UNC school of Pharmacy at the time, and it was all hands on deck (faculty, students, staff) collecting, examining, and shipping out donated unexpired medications to ship Down East because pharmacies were inundated and people were without medication for weeks.
Florence’s 6 mph speed explains why we still have gotten basically nothing here in the Triangle so far. Except no school for the kiddos yesterday and today (grumble, grumble).
