Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Second rate reporter says what?

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

One way or another, he’s a liar.

This blog will pay for itself.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Let there be snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

He really is that stupid.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

All hail the time of the bunny!

“But what about the lurkers?”

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Even the Very Serious…

This is a tough, but true realization from @DavidJollyFL, and with serious implications for those of us who hoped that the party had not irretrievably lost its collective mind. https://t.co/TVBlgnKBMS

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) October 7, 2018

Tom, I have a lot of respect for what you've tried to do, but Southerners especially understand that the R's have always been the Playboy Magazine of politics: yes, it's had its intellectuals and free-market true believers, but most didn't come to the party "for the articles."

I’m thinking it really would have been great if some Democratic Senator had asked Brett Kavanugh to explain the rules for Devil’s Triangle.

Not that I think it would have affected the final result at all; I just think it would have been funny to see him trying to make up some kind of plausible set of rules.

I’ve been avoiding all talk of SCOTUS since Friday, esp after seeing the writing on the wall. Second the weekend offline a much as possible and muted as much as I could any mentions of it in my twitter TL (using muted words setting doe the first time)…i’m gonna keep it that way until after the midterms (which just happens to be the day after my birthday)…i decide to take back my sanity…time to focus on local and state stuff and GOTV and just bacuslly worrying bout me and mine…after two days of filtering, my mood (and my aura…i had some really black thoughts of late) is already better and I’d like for it to stay that way.

So if i don’t comment as much on political stuff as much anymore it’s to keep myself sane, calm and happy.

I need a fuqn break and since I’m not finna be able to travel again til after the New Year…gonna have to find another way to settle my mind…no more non-stop politics.

    Anyhoo…

When the plane landed, some idiot made some loud comment about how Great it was that the Good Senator was Fighting for America in the Senate (or something) and broke out into applause. I’m thinking it really would have been great if some Democratic Senator had asked Brett Kavanugh to explain the rules for Devil’s Triangle.

Uh-Uh. Someone should have realized why Graham jumped in for Ms. Mitchell (IIRC) when he did. That leads to two questions:

    (1) Do you remember you are under oath, SIr?

    (2) Do you not see any calendar date that fits the story of Ms. Ford?

Extra credit would be if it had been a woman Senator because clearly (with Klobuchar) he has a problem with women questioning him.

Would it have made any difference? Probably not. They could have had a video and a signed confession from Judge and they were still voting Kavanaugh through.

Was Murkowski a no on Final Saturday? Did she flip from cloture?

In authoritarian and totalitarian regimes of all political stripes, power needs to make everything political. Everyone has to jump on one side or the other sooner or later, just a matter of when. Trump’GOP wants to push us there.

The vile Grassley jumped, in front of the whole country on the antisemitic alt-right bandwagon last week, with his BS about Soros funding the horrid persecution of poor little Brett, or Bart, or whatever. Soon we’ll all have to say ‘I like beer’, and make sure the inflection is just right.

    Re Cthulhu,
Has anyone else read the bleak teaser for C. Stross’s newest Laundry Series novel? The first chapter of The Labyrinth Index (Note: C Stross is Jewish, and the PM is a good guy, relative to the leadership in America)

“—All Jews!” the Prime Minister snaps. “They’re just the same from where I’m standing.” His expression is one of tight-lipped disapproval—then I blink, and in the time it takes before my eyelids open again, I forget his face. He sips delicately from his teacup, pinkie crooked, then explains His thinking. “Christians, Muslims, Jews—they say they’re different religions, but you mark my words, they all worship the same god, and you know what that leads to if you let it fester. Monotheism is nothing but trouble—unless the one true god is me, of course.” He puts his teacup down and beams at us.
    …
The PM holds up a hand: “Maybe we do, but they don’t, and if they get out of control again we’ll end up with another Akhenaten. That’s where they get it from, you know—once you allow one god to take over a pantheon and suppress the worship of rivals, it never ends well unless you’re the first mover.

Actually this all seems to be more like fandom. Go watch the Star Wars Fan Bois ranting about about Last Jedi. It really amazing how these SW fans use the same language and get so impassioned about a bad movie. I think it’s closer to say it’s the cart leading the horse and these twits are living vicariously threw Trump and Rapey Bret like they do with Luke Skywalker.

@randy khan: As someone familiar with mathematics, I found it hilarious that he said that it was “three beer mugs, in a triangle.”

If you have three points, they are either collinear (“on the same line”) or form a triangle. I mean, think about it for about ten seconds – if you can’t put a line through them, then there’s an angle from beer1-beer2, and now you see that beer1-beer2-beer3 is a triangle.

That he lied should be damning but that he lied so *poorly* should be extra damning, you know? “Dude, you not only perjured yourself, you were *sloppy* in perjuring yourself! You basically *dared* me to point out your perjury. What do you want me to do, ignore that?”
