Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Bark louder, little dog.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

People are complicated. Love is not.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

So, this might happen:

Hurricane Dorian is now projected to grow into a Cat. 4 storm.

One of the most accurate storm predictions, the European Model expects a track that would strike a full frontal blow on Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.#ThursdayThoughts pic.twitter.com/x7y7HfPVsP

I think it’ll come ashore further north and spare Disgraceland. But isn’t it pretty to think so?

sad thing for me (and Betty and a few other Florida Juicers) is that the way the storm is approaching Florida we’re all going to get hit with at least a Cat 1 storm after the time it hits Mal-A-Loogie as a Cat 4.

It’s kind of a good news bad news deal. But if one week of power outages in my county means trump’s crown jewel gets washed out into the Atlantic Ocean like the wrath of God, it might be worth it. Just hope nobody gets killed as it happens.

As much as I’d like to see the most infiltrated resort in America washed away, hurricanes are blunt instruments and good people will get hurt as well. Let’s hope that it curves out to sea at the last moment.

Also, too, don’t underestimate Trump’s ability to grift. Not only will he do his best to flood Florida with money, in 2-4 years we’ll find out that half the contractors were long-time Republican supporters who delivered minimal relief or reconstruction but nonetheless found ways to make huge PAC donations and/or join his flooded club.

Also, three, the further south it strikes the more likely it is to re-intensify in the Gulf, though that’s a SWAG on my part.

Mumps sickens hundreds of detained migrants in 19 states

Mumps has swept through 57 immigration detention facilities in 19 states since September, according to the first U.S. government report on the outbreaks in the overloaded immigration system.

The virus sickened 898 adult migrants and 33 detention center staffers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its report today.

New cases continue as migrants are taken into custody or transferred between facilities, the report said. As of last week, outbreaks were happening in 15 facilities in seven states.

While now there is doubtless a surfeit of tacky on the property, it was originally built as an estate for Marjorie Merriweather Post (think General Foods and E.F. Hutton). The main structure – a National Historic Landmark, so renovations and alterations scrutinized – and likely some extant outbuildings were there when he bought the place.

Whole shebang sits on a barrier island.

    BTW, from 2005:

Donald Trump says he received a $17 million insurance payment in 2005 for hurricane damage to Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach. But The Associated Press has found little evidence of such large-scale damage.
    [snip]
Trump’s description of extensive damage does not match the versions of Mar-a-Lago members and even Trump loyalists. In an interview about Mar-a-Lago’s history, Trump’s longtime former butler, Anthony Senecal, recalled no catastrophic damage. He said Hurricane Wilma, the last of a string of storms which barreled through in 2004 and 2005, flattened trees behind the estate, but the house itself only lost some roof tiles.

“That house has never been seriously damaged,” said Senecal, discussing Mar-a-Lago’s luck with hurricanes. “I was there for all of them.”
    [snip]
Palm Beach building department records showed no permits for construction on that scale after the storms. The only permits that appeared hurricane-related were $3,000 in repairs to storm-damaged outdoor lighting and the vacuuming of sand from the property’s beachfront pool. Likewise, records of the city’s Landmarks and Preservation Commission reflected no repair work conducted following the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. Source</blockquote

We used a variety of portable generators over the decades, and our peak was a Yamaha 3K watt generator engineered for camping, which meant it was extra silent. Inside the house you couldn’t hear it running.

More recently we bit the bullet and had a Generac installed, 22KW, it runs everything but the central air. If necessary we could retreat to the basement which is underground enough to be pretty cool. It runs on natural gas, so you need no liquid fuel, it switches over from the grid to the gen-set automatically, starts up after 15 seconds of outage.

Highly recommended!! You can get them with a carb to run on propane, if that service is available in your area.

ETA: It would certainly run a room AC unit if we were to install one with a dedicated 220V line/outlet.

Nice way to be an asshole. “The hurricane could devastate Florida, destroy homes, displace thousands of people and cause billions in damage, but maybe it’ll get Turmp’s hotel hur hur hur.”

Orange Menace can defraud the insurance company and the government but at this point he is probably making a lot of money from MarLago as a quid pro quo bribing business so not having it usable probably hurts more than the fraud would gain him. Furthermore if he doesn’t win reelection there’s a shelf life to Marlagos money making potential. A lot of damage will make it not usable for at least 6 months. And don’t forget he’s known for not paying his construction/remodel bills. Who is going to work for the asshole when there is plenty of other work available.

Lot of right-wing "journalists" telling on themselves today. Gateway Pundit blogger deleted this admission that she witnesses, but doesn't report on, "illegal direct action" so she can have access. That's not journalism! @RAVEN: I asked because the last time I saw him he had just had an ambulance ride and was heading for the VA hospital the next morning, yesterday I think. He was having a lot of dizziness and people were worried. Was he here last night and he’s fine?

Watching Dorian, I’m reaching my usual panic stage as appropriate for a problem about which I can do absolutely nothing but worry. If the intensity and path directly over my island hold, it’s fairly likely I won’t have a home to return to. When I lost a quarter of the house in Floyd, I had money and could made repairs. Now …. well … I don’t wish ill for anyone but very specifically _______, but I do wish the track would shift. Or perhaps Mother Nature will nuke it before it bothers any of us. Paws crossed.

Stay frosty, stay safe. The worry eats up time and energy which could be put to more productive uses.

Got any elderly or disabled neighbors who might appreciate aid with shopping, home storm preparation, shopping, etc.?

@NotMax: At the moment, I’m in Maine, which is part of the reason for the helpless feeling, but my friends (most much younger than I) are going to be ready and hunkering down in the more solid structures on our tiny island. We have our fingers, toes, eyes, and wires crossed.

My worry is that Mar-a-Lago and Doral will be seriously damaged, and Trump will have us pay to fix them since the former is his “Southern White House”, and Doral will be hosting the next G7.

China better clear all of its spies out of Mar-A-Lago pronto. Don’t wait until the last minute, China. You can’t expect for large groups of people to flee with ease on short notice if all the roads are jammed or flooded. Especially when they have so much kit to carry with them.

    @NotMax:

dead thread, but this is wrong. you can go through the NHC advisories and the one in effect at the time trump started tweeting had the predicted path go right through PR.
