Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

This really is a full service blog.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

He really is that stupid.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

We still have time to mess this up!

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

    From USA today story above.

Ousted Florida scientist files whistleblower complaint

Florida’s former top coronavirus data scientist has filed a whistleblower complaint against the state’s Health Department, accusing the agency of firing her in retaliation for refusing to manipulate data to support the push to reopen Florida after its quarantine. The complaint by former agency data manager Rebekah Jones targets Gov. Ron DeSantis directly.

“These efforts to falsify the numbers are a pattern and practice in Florida government that goes on to this day,” Jones’ attorney, Rick Johnson, said in a statement. “Ron DeSantis has routinely given false numbers to the press. His underlings at (the Health Department) follow his example and his direction.”

DeSantis has dismissed the complaint as part of a “partisan narrative.”

From the Australian Dept of Health:.

‘As at 3pm on 20 July 2020, a total of 12,069 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 123 deaths, and 8,392 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19.

    • Over the past week, there has been an average of 300 new cases reported each day. Of the newly reported cases, the majority have been from Victoria.
    • Following the peak of cases at the end of March, there have been a relatively low number of new cases reported daily between mid-April and early-June 2020. Cases have increased since mid-June.
    • Of cases with a reported place of acquisition, 42% have recent international travel history, including over 1,300 cases associated with cruise ships.
    • To date, over 3,534,000 tests have been conducted nationally. Of those tests conducted 0.3% have been positive.’

Victoria still dominates the news today with one death and a net increase of 246 new cases. (+275/-29) There are minor outbreaks in NSW, but the total net increase for the country was 268 new cases.

I just spent a weekend at an eco-resort two and half hours driving from Wuhan with my family, as well as families of several of my wife’s close friends. The resort is a fully functioning organic rice farm, also has an organic fruit garden. All in all a very nice experience. It was great to get out of Wuhan for pleasure.

None of the service or management staff wore masks, and we did not have to produce green health codes, no temperature checks. Almost all of the guests were from Wuhan, and everyone wore masks upon arrival, but took them off soon after. The resort of ~ 15 suits were fully booked for the weekend, with ~ 60 guests. Guests generally kept to their own groups. Masking rate among the locals in the neighboring villages and towns is < 5%, and none of the monks and nuns in the Buddhist temples and monasteries we visited wore masks (though it is not a touristy area). It was almost like back to pre-COVID normal, the only reminder of the pandemic is reading about the outbreak at Urumqi, and the sh*tshows across world (basically everywhere other than most of East/Southeast Asia, Oceana, most of Europe, and Canada).

The area was significantly affected by the recent heavy rain and flooding, all of the rivers/lakes/reservoirs all had clearly elevated water levels (with government workers and volunteers manning 24/7 watch on the dykes and dams), and some mountain roads were closed due to landslides (or dangers thereof).

Returning to Wuhan, most people have taken off their masks in the area around my residential compound, though masking is still required in hospitals, public transportation, and public indoor spaces. Taxi and ride share drivers still wore masks and disinfected their vehicles after each fare.

China is reopening cinemas and theaters in the coming days, with social distancing restrictions: 1/3 capacity with strict spacing between occupied seats, programs < 2 hour longs, masking mandatory, no food or drinks allowed. I doubt the cinemas will break even with these guidelines, neither will the movie productions.

There’s been an embarrassing own-goal here in Scotland in the fight against COVID-19 — a Scottish-based call centre dealing with NHS England COVID-19 contact tracing has been abruptly closed after half a dozen of the staff were confirmed to have contracted the disease. I had believed, without investigating it deeply that any contact-tracing effort was being carried out and coordinated via home-based workers over secure VPN and not workers congregating in a call-centre plague pit.

Generally, Scotland is reporting zero deaths and only seven confirmed cases over the past 24 hours but with the caveat that Monday’s reports are usually lower than reality due to administrative delays over the weekend.
