Doctors’ statements are curt.

Easier to say ‘Don’t let it dominate your life’ when you have gold plated healthcare available at the slightest sniffle.
Geoboy
Well, Donnie, you may feel better than you did twenty years ago, but you sure as hell don’t look better than you did 20 years ago (and given what you looked like then, that’s should be concerning).

It’s the dex. It has to be. He’s on such a euphoric high that it’s elevating his narcissism. And he’s going to collapse in a few days if not tonight. I just can’t. He needs to live long enough to lose the election. After that I don’t care.

All these doctors are going to have their careers ruined if Trump relapses
Zzyzx
I thought I was immune from his provocation, but I apparently am not.
I’ve agreed to shut down seeing friends and hearing music and travel and eating out and pretty much doing anything that I enjoy in life because I couldn’t live with myself if I infected anyone. And now 30-40 percent of the population will feel empowered to be their worst selves.
It’s hard enough to behave ourselves and follow the rules. Now it’s going to be next to impossible.

@RepubAnon: Even if he never goes back to the hospital, there is a >50% likelihood that he has severe lingering effects like fatigue and shortness of breath. One puts limits on his preferred 1.5 hour rallies and the other cuts out his golfing time.
Also, too… I guess it remains to be seen how insane the areas he tries to campaign in are to allow him to do so anytime in the next 20 days. He’s going to be a vector for an insane amount of personally caused pain in addition to the gaping hole in our national strategy.

I posted this comment on an earlier thread, but it’s very appropriate here:
Well, the good news from the iDJT this afternoon is that he will continue to infect his admirers and employees… I would bet a substantial sum that he will be back at Walter Reed soon.
I very much doubt that he’s actually no longer infected.
People in the White House should call in sick for the next few days. All of them. The Third Lady should check into the local Trump hotel, but probably won’t; perhaps that is prohibited by the revised pre-nup…?
Very much like living in a Gibson novel at this point. Or perhaps the world where military intelligence is combating demons attracted by computers?

Trump has to leave the hospital, declare himself the boss of COVID-19 and decree that the danger has passed based on his own survival, or his reelection bid is kaput. It may be anyway — there are only 29 days left, and all the data we have says he’s in a hole. But this is his only shot.
Maybe it’ll pay off. He’s obese and elderly, but he does have the very finest available public housing and the best government-run healthcare in the world. Maybe he’ll take a turn for the worse. Maybe not. Who knows? But it’s a gamble he had to take because losing the election — especially in a landslide — will be an extinction-level injury to his extra-fragile ego.

OT (sorta) but a bleg nonetheless: Does anybody have ideas on where to buy N95 masks? Like … 12?
The story: My mom has a friend in a Red State who is gonna be a pollworker. She’s …. well, my mom’s age, and it’s for three weeks, 12hr/day. My mom told me about it, and my second thought (my first was about personal safety, but my mom tells me that the location is close to the police headquarters). Three weeks, 12 hours a day. She has a face shield (but that’s not so effective) and cloth masks. I think to myself: can we buy and ship her some N95s? Because I’d like my mom to see her friend again sometime next year.
Any ideas where to get ’em (that I can trust they actually work)? To be clear: this is not a bleg for $$, but rather *only* for leads to where to find good quality N95 masks.
P.S. I recognize that there are probably other personnel who need these masks, too. But …. she’s doing us all a solid, pollworking in a Red State.
ETA: if anybody else has suggestions for better PPE, I’m all ears. 12 hours a day, three weeks. 75 years old. Ugh.

If he toughs his way through it and infects a bunch more Republicans, I’ll be happy. I wouldn’t cry too hard if he focused on his Senators, either.
If he manages to recover without further incident, I’ll be disappointed, but if by doing so he encourages more of his voters to take needless chances and kill themselves in his place, I’ll be happy.

When a person as sick with COVID as Trump’s medical regimen would indicate he is tries to escape the hospital, you lock them up in a secure COVID psychiatric ward as a suicide risk and immediate danger to others.
Right now the most ethical path for Trump’s doctors to take is to manufacture a blood-oxygen level emergency, intubate, hook him up to a respirator, and handcuff him to the bed. It’s the only way to protect him from himself.

So, Trump feels great, will be ‘discharged’ from Walter Reed at 6:30pm today.
Side effect of dex is the plenty-mentioned mania. Side effect of COVID that’s just coming to light is pain suppression due to interference on the Neuropilin-1 receptor, interrupting the normal neurological pain sensitivity process.
Known effect of pushing yourself when infected with COVID: long-haulers. The disease settles into normally hard-to-infect ACE-2 sites like the heart and wreaks havoc there.
One good thing is that Trump is testing unheard-of treatment therapies for us.

@Betty Cracker:
This is my take. There basically are three paths to consider:
1. Stay in the hospital until it’s clear he’s okay.
2. Leave as fast as possible even if he’s not definitely in the clear and it turns out okay.
3. Leave as fast as possible even if he’s not definitely in the clear and he crashes and has to go back.
2 is the best possible case. 3 obviously is the worst case, but from an electoral point of view, 1 is pretty bad, too, and the longer he stays in the hospital, the closer it comes to 3. And he’s behind, and there’s probably polling evidence that every day in the hospital is putting him further behind.
So if all you care about is winning (and if the person in question is a complete narcissist who believes in his own infallibility), you go with door number 2.

Our Democratic party in our county here in Iowa (the most populous county) has trained volunteers who will pick up your ballot (they have badges) the day you call, give you a receipt, and put it in a locked box before delivering it to the County Election Box that same day (the day that you call them). My seriously isolating neighbors (I haven’t even seen the woman outside) are greatly relieved.
This county party is a mighty machine. They have been registering voters right and left. They held a drive in fundraiser that had 900 people drive in, with meals delivered to their cars (last year’s steak fry with all 12 or 13 of the presidential candidates had about 11 or 12,000 attendees. That was fun and now it looks, in retrospect, so innocent.

Two-thirds of Americans say President Donald Trump handled the risk of coronavirus infection to others around him irresponsibly, according to a new CNN Poll conducted by SSRS in the days following the announcement that the President had contracted the virus that has disrupted everyday life for millions of people for more than half a year.
With Trump hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, 69% of Americans said they trusted little of what they heard from the White House about the President’s health, with only 12% saying they trusted almost all of it.
Disapproval of the President’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak stands at a new high in the survey, with 60% saying they disapprove. Additionally, 63% say his own infection is unlikely to change anything about the way that he handles the pandemic.

@zhena gogolia: He is a small man with a fragile ego and now he is sick. He is acting out because that’s all he can do.

This is largely correct. From what we’ve been told, the White House includes all kinds of high tech medical equipment, and Trump has round-the-clock access to doctors. Early reports were that Trump could pretty much have received the same treatment he got at Walter Reed had he stayed at the White House.
Also, the bottom line is that Trump would have found the doctor to say what Trump wanted him to say. There is not much point in beating up the doctors over this.
Trump could issue orders to make any facility in which he lives, works and travels safe. It’s on him.
Trump is a stupid man. He does stupid things. There is no practical way to prevent him from continuing to do stupid things.

From CNN, the doctor’s statement was his ‘clinical status’ supports him leaving
That means as of right now his status supports him leaving. The doctors might very well expect him to get worse and be back in 48-72 hours but as this very moment he can leave.

@catclub: It was a wildly irresponsible and desperate gamble by Trump. Desperation. He has nothing to lose and all to gain.
He would lose the election if he did what the doctors told him to do. Medical advice is what he’s been ignoring and belittling for the past 9 months. He would look weak and he would surely lose a chunk of his base and then the election.
Between this and how he handled covid I am convinced that to lose the election is worse than death for Trump. He will do anything to win. Anything. Anything to avoid humiliation of the truth of his own empty worthlessness.
If he could have foreign troops deploy here and back him by arms I believe he would do that. If he survives covid he is surely going to try that with his white power militias.

@The Moar You Know:
That’s what the dex does. It gets you high while the steroid has an opportunity to let the body possibly work. It has drawbacks. Boy does it have drawbacks. There is a reason it’s a last resort sort of thing. First it fools you by getting you high, blocking the crap feeling that’s still happening to you. Second it fools the body to a degree as well because sometimes the body’s response to some invader, like Covid, is too massive for a person to survive what it takes to overcome the invader. Think of cancer treatments, medicines or radiation, they tear your ass up because they hopefully stop cancer cell reproduction without doing too much damage to the cells you want. But they do damage to cells, cancerous and non cancerous, just hopefully less to the non cancerous cells. And it works because the reproductive rate of cancer cells is faster than your normal cells. The more aggressive the cancer/Covid is to any particular body and the more closely the treatment fits to your particular health needs, the better/worse the outcome will be. This may be one reason most but not all older people have a more difficult time with the virus and die at a higher rate, their bodies no longer repair themselves as well, their defenses are weaker, their cellular reproductive rate is slower and weaker.

I played a few Werewolf/Mafia games online where there was a small group of mafia members instead of a lone one. The bad guys got their own private message board to plot against the other players, while the good guys were flying blind unless they happened to be assigned a special power by the person running the game.
I thought about hosting my own themed game once, but I don’t know enough balancing the teams & powers given so that one team isn’t favored to win over the other.
A White House Covid theme is intriguing. I’m assuming you’d have the bad guys be Covid + ? And involuntary recruitment with a low chance of working?
You usually have a Doctor in the game, but the Doc’s role is to protect a player from a mafia kill, not tell if they are mafia. You could have have the Doc protect from a kill, and a Blocker (Face Mask?) prevent recruitment. The Detective (with high or 100% accuracy) would be a Covid PCR Tester. If you had enough players, you could also have a Rapid Covid Tester that gives false negatives 50% or so of the time. The Tracker would be a Covid Contact Tracer.
If the mafia members have any special power to block an investigation, you could call it Executive Privilege.

@Gvg: Good point. I didn’t check closely enough – some of their N95 have valves and some don’t.
Thanks.
Cheers,
Scott.

@artem1s: I have wondered something similar – do the doctors at Walter Reed know about all the self-medicating Trump does, and could there be potential interactions because they don’t know what he’s taking.
If they were smart, the first thing they did was run a blood test to see what drugs he had in his bloodstream.

@Ruckus: Nice summary …. but you’re a machinist! We’re all learning a lot more biology and epidemiology than we’d planned for.

@Gvg: They can’t keep him in the hospital if he doesn’t want to stay there — I believe any patient has the right to refuse treatment — so the only thing I would fault the doctors for is, not being able to convince a raging egotist/asshole that he could be wrong about anything. Personally, the farther he gets from real medical treatment, the happier I am. The Republicans have the unutterable gall to get all pious about wishing this abusive monster well? Fuck their feelings.
