TL; DR — machine washing is better than hand-washing at eliminating virus particles.
(Laundry tip: If you don’t already have what used to be called a ‘lingerie bag‘, they’re cheap & widely available, and would IMO protect the elastic loops or cloth ties on your masks from getting tangled up during the spin cycle.)

My wife is getting tested for Covid today in advance of a knee-replacement surgery on Tuesday. She’s gonna be in her car, in a line of cars.
The big thing for her is that she’ll get in line in a couple hours, and can’t bring her tea, because we have no idea if there are facilities if she needs to void.
We hope this trivial concern is the biggest thing for her. We’ve been pretty anal about our distancing/cleaning/etc, and I’m sure she doesn’t have it, but if she comes back positive I’ll feel so awful for having been in public around others.
I have been passing our workplace’s thermal scanning every weekday for a couple of months. Just putting my faith in that, and my wife and not being positive-yet-asymptomatic.

Malaysia’s daily numbers. DG of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reports 374 new cases today in his media briefing, which brings the cumulative reported total to 15,096 cases.
372 new cases are from local infection, including 29 non-Malaysians.17 are Malaysians who recently travelled to high-risk zones in Sabah. Of the rest, 277 cases are in Sabah: 113 from close-contact screenings, 118 from miscellaneous screenings, 31 from existing clusters, and 15 from the new Highway cluster. 38 cases are in Selangor: 13 from close-contact screenings, seven from existing clusters, five from miscellaneous screenings, and 13 from new clusters, Bah Manggis (six), Utama (three), Tasik (three) and Simera (one). 27 cases are in Kedah, all from the Tembok cluster in Alor Setar Prison.
Five cases are in Sarawak: four from the new Putracluster, one from miscellaneous screening. Four cases are in KL, three from existing clusters and one from miscellaneous screening. Three cases are in Penang, all from the Remand Prison cluster. One case is in Johore, from miscellaneous screening. One case is in Perak, from close-contact screening. One case is in Labuan, from close-contact screening.
Two are imported cases: one Malaysian returning from the Philippines, one non-Malaysian arriving from the Philippines. One case is in Putrajaya, from an existing cluster.
76 more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 10,780 patients recovered — 71.41% of the cumulative reported total. 4,161 active and contagious cases are currently in hospital; 73 are in ICU, 28 of them on respirators.
Three new Covid-19 deaths were reported today, all in Sabah: a 61 year old man with diabetes and TB of the eye; a 54 year old woman with diabetes, hypertension and obesity; and a 51 year old man with diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. The total is now 155 deaths — 1.03% of the cumulative reported total, 1.42% of resolved cases.
In other news, the big fancy 1Utama mall in Petaling Jaya, the site of the Utama cluster, will be closed for a week on Monday, to enable screenings and sanitation to be carried out. An enhanced movement control order will be imposed on the workers’dormitory at the Tropicana development, also in Petaling Jaya. (The Ttopicana Golf and Country Club and the residences (i.e. Mcmansions) in the same development are not affected. And an army field hospital is being activated in Tawau, Sabah, to treat non-Covid-19 cases so that existing hospitals in the state can focus on the pandemic.

General – Boris Johnson is under fire for announcing new local restrictions without consulting with the local government concerned. He has promised to do better in future. “Hospitality” sector in both England and Scotland continuing to whine about closures/restrictions on opening hours of pubs and bars.

I will vouch for washing cloth masks in a lingerie bag; every day when each of us returns to Chez Toaster, the used mask is deposited in a paper bag on the basement door. Paper is a very good dessicant. Every weekend, I take the bag upstairs, sort it into “black” or “color” (we atheist technocrats don’t wear white masks) and zip them into mesh bags and wash them on “hand wash” cycle. Then hang for 24 hours in the laundry closet to dry, and back onto the hooks by the outer doors. We have about 30 masks, so no matter how many times one has to go off-property, there’s a clean mask for the next time.

Starting tonight Scotland’s most populated areas in the Central Belt have been locked down for 16 days – you can go to a cafe or restaurant during the day, as long as the establishment isn’t serving alcohol, because, face it, alcohol makes people all happy and sad and not really effing caring about social distancing, in the least .. You can’t gather in people’s houses, because too many people in Scotland have lots of family members in close proximity but in different houses, but you can still hang out with up to six folks in gardens/backyards. It all sounds ridiculous and petty and ‘who can follow the rules?’ but actually the Scottish Gov’t is trying so hard to contain the virus spread, while also trying to keep a little bit of normal life going. While there are a lot of people understandably making a fuss, it’s actually amazing how many people are going along with this – which I think has a lot to do with the fact that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been pretty forthright about what’s going on in Scotland – when we’re doing good, she says so; when we’re not, she says we’ve got to double-down, and it ain’t going to be fun. She herself has seen family members once in months, and then lockdown started again. In terms of scarey diseases, honesty from your leaders is a pretty good idea.
