Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

“They all knew.”

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Be a wild strawberry.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“Alexa, change the president.”

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Wait, what?

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

This fight is for everything.

This Story Just Floored Me

Can you imagine being in her shoes?

BUFFALO — Crystal Knihinicki is 33 years old. She’s a registered nurse, working with COVID-19 patients in the medical ICU at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

In March, she planned her own funeral.

She sought out a funeral home, wrote the obituary, re-assigned her health care proxy to a trusted nurse practitioner she works with.

“When we got our first few patients, I had been on the phone doing union stuff, and we had people come on from New York City talking about what was happening there and the nurses that were dying,” Knihinicki said, stoic and unwavering in her explanation.

“And so I thought that it would be unfair to ask my husband, while he’s taking care of two young kids, to plan my funeral if I did die,” she said. “It’s overwhelming.”

The damage that’s being done to nurses, doctors and other providers and support staff will be similar to soldiers who fought in a war, but there will be so much pressure from Republicans to stuff COVID down the memory hole that they will only receive a fraction of the recognition, compensation and other assistance that they deserve.

It’s Festivus, which means a time for an airing of the grievances, but to be honest I am not sure healthy that is for me right now.

Every Boy Uses the Same Line

Every Boy Uses the Same Line
My wife, who normally gives no fucks about politics, has been paying a lot of hate-focused attention on Trump. So, last night I overheard a good part of Trump’s speech. As Steve M notes, the press went with the $2k stimulus check as the lede and missed a lot of the context. Since my wife doesn’t pay attention to politics much, she’s blissfully unaware of the role of the omnibus bill in the degradation of our political system. Trump’s speech spent a good amount of time reeling off the different items in the omnibus bill linked to the stimulus, which taken individually ($25 billion to fight Asian carp, $1 billion for the Smithsonian) sound completely irrelevant to getting people money during the time of COVID. She hates Trump, but also ended up wondering why that shit was in a stimulus bill.

Good question, and one that the press really doesn’t cover much (so the job falls to people like AOC, who has a good Twitter thread on it, starting here). I take that back — the press covers it, but they use a “gridlock” both-sides template, which is almost worse than saying nothing at all. My answer is simply that legislators found that voting for individual funding bills, with all the debate and press coverage that it entails, got them too close to responsibility, and it turned out that if all the shit that they didn’t want anyone to know about was rolled into a giant turd that had to be passed in one sweaty, straining, unpleasant event, they would get less flack about it. She didn’t seem satisfied with that answer, for some odd reason, but it does have the merit of being simple and relatable.

Claire update for the holidays

by David Anderson|  December 23, 20209:14 am| 46 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance, Claire Updates, Fuck Cancer

Good morning —

Just a bit of good news. Claire got discharged from the hospital late on Monday night after her 4th round of chemo and treatment.  As of last night, her appetite and energy is pretty good.  She’ll get to spend, assuming no setbacks, at least through New Years at her house with her family.  Santa will know where to find her.

From what I’ve been told 4th hand, Claire’s numbers are “good” and stable.  I’m not sure what that means except it is far better than “bad” and “declining” or “not improving”.  After the New Years’ she is due back to Philadelphia for her 5th round of first line treatment.  I think the goal of the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds of the first line treatment for her type of cancer is to find the hold-outs and 1 in a million cells that are still cancerous and kill them.

One of the things that has made her ability to tolerate these treatment rounds plausible has been blood transfusions.  She has been getting blood products several times each cycle.  A transfusion usually produces significant pain and symptom relief.  Right now, blood is in short supply.  Many centers that typically want to have a three to five day supply on hand are now operating with a twenty four to thirty six hour cushion.  If you want to help Claire and plenty of other kids with cancer, see if you can give blood or platelets over the winter break.  I’m signed up for another platelet session on January 3rd where I can watch a movie and make sure that someone else’s pain is alleviated.

Finally, I am still just blown away by all of your generosity.  The apartment in Philly has been a godsend for Claire’s parents.  My sister-in-law has a respite from the hospital to clear her head, get a good night’s sleep and decompress.  That has been an incredible relief for her especially as they have not had to worry about the immediate financial toxicity of a cancer diagnosis that so many families need to face at the same time.  Whenever I think about this, I tear up.  So again, thank you.

Do you feel like Festivus is getting a bit too commercialized?

— Slava Malamud (@SlavaMalamud) December 21, 2020

Because 2020, one of my crowns popped off last night, so either I’ll be spending some squeezed-in time at the dentist today, or I’ll spend the long weekend trying not to chew on the side with the exposed metal bits sticking up (which would be easier if it wasn’t a first molar).

Elsewhere, in the GOP version of a Festivus miracle, the Squatter-in-Chief has found another way to throw sand in the financial gears:

On The Road – Albatrossity – New Zealand #3

Albatrossity

It is often said, and not entirely in jest, that if you drop your camera in New Zealand and it accidentally takes a picture, the picture will be stunning. There are indeed some beautiful landscape photo opportunities in that country, and although none of these were the result of a dropped camera, I hope you enjoy them anyway!

Map of places mentioned in today’s post.

Road to Arthur's PassDecember 31, 2015

The Southern Alps run down the spine of the South Island, and dominate the scenery in much of it. This is a view on the road from Christchurch to the west coast of that island, via Arthur’s Pass, Midsummer snow is still on much of the alpine landscape, and a glacial river valley is in the foreground.
