Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Republicans in disarray!

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I really should read my own blog.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

He really is that stupid.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Infrastructure week. at last.

People are complicated. Love is not.

We still have time to mess this up!

The US administered 1.4 million vaccine shots today, bringing the total to 169 million, or 50.8 doses per 100 people, covering 26.0% of the population. The 7-day moving average declined back to slightly below 3.0 million shots per day. pic.twitter.com/rqt1d50d7n

US isn’t seeing a “surge” in coronavirus, Dr Fauci said on @msnbc this morning.

“I don't want to say surge because surge means you've got a really high increase. We’re seeing it start to creep up now.”

The US had +62,283 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the total to over 31.5 million. The 7-day moving average remained largely unchanged at over 65,000 new cases per day. pic.twitter.com/8dDRlHFFzV

Five states account for nearly half of new U.S. coronavirus infections. The situation is putting pressure on the federal government to consider changing how it distributes vaccines by sending more doses to hot spots. https://t.co/A8HibFIz2n

— The Associated Press (@AP) April 6, 2021

… New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey together reported 44% of the nation’s new COVID-19 infections, or nearly 197,500 new cases, in the latest available seven-day period, according to state health agency data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Total U.S. infections during the same week numbered more than 452,000.

The heavy concentration of new cases in states that account for 22% of the U.S. population has prompted some experts and elected officials to call for President Joe Biden’s administration to ship additional vaccine doses to those places. So far, the White House has shown no signs of shifting from its policy of dividing vaccine doses among states based on population…

at least in the US the restrictions were never that strict even at the worst points of the pandemic, politicians gave carve-outs promiscuously or personally flouted their own rules, and almost everything had to do with private rather than public mandates. https://t.co/FbVUukQcqj

Side effect of Ohio Gov DeWine’s vaccine program. Favor rural areas. But they love Trump. So people of color are going out to the boondocks to get vaxxed. Appointments are available because the locals do not want them.

My grand-daughter went to Warren. My hairdresser’s assistant went to Bucyrus. Gym Jordan country. She didn’t even know how to pronounce the town name.

    Monroe County, NY stats:

    New cases = 147
    Confirmed active cases = 2744
    2.6% test positivity

    Deaths at 1207

37.5% of Monroe County has had at least 1 vaccine dose.
    24% are totally vaccinated.

According to the local news we’re having another wave because of a youth hockey tournament last week.

I am still feeling guilty about getting vaxxed. Nephews at risk in other states still waiting. Jackals in other states still waiting.

Pa and Mi jackals.: try Ohio grocery pharmacies. Giant Eagle on PA border. DeWine doesn’t care about residency. Tell them you are from PA and a smoker, and you go to the front of the line.

Orange County had 131 new cases, positivity is at 1.6%, only 107 people in hospital/ICU. Two measurements down in the yellow tier.

Gov. Gav said we’ll reopen in June, but people should keep wearing masks and distancing even so.

The Health Ministry will text me soon with appointment details. I don’t have to go hunting online for a vaccination centre or an appointment.

There are plans to let private hospitals and clinics become vaccination centres. General practitioners in private practice have been invited to sign up as vaccination providers. But as far as I know, no pharmacies or pharmacists.

@sab: I’m not personally interested in trying to jump the line. I was already ok with waiting my turn before, but esp now that they’ll open for everybody on Apr 19.

Watching the stats it looks to me like the PA cases are creeping upward a lot faster than the US as a whole and that’s kind of worrisome. It affects my decisions on how much normal to return to even after vaccination. Certainly I won’t come out of lockdown till full CDC-blessed immunity, two weeks after 2nd dose.

I find myself wondering: flu season is a big seasonal concern in the US. Last year there was barely any flu outbreak at all because masking up and social distancing kept it at bay. Will Americans learn to mask up and keep their distance in flu seasons to come? It has long been common practice in places like Japan.

    @wvng:

@?BillinGlendaleCA: a bit painful to start, but it’s prehensile, which is cool.

    My tail itches a lot!!

More seriously, I saw my doctor briefly yesterday, and we had time to chat as it was late in his schedule. I told him my side effect from my second Moderna shot was heavy sleep for two days, followed by severe muscle cramps in places I had never had them before.

He’s treated me for spasms and resulting pinched nerves for 40 years now, but this is different. Evidently that’s a fairly common side effect. It is slacking off a little bit now, comes and goes.

He told me he had several patients who had serious mental issues after apparently recovering from the viral infection. One guy suddenly was totally incompetent, couldn’t sign his name, didn’t know where he was, what was going on. His son moved back home to take care of him and his affairs. Then one day months later he sat up and said “Hey, what’s going on? Where am I? Why are you here, son?” and had made an apparent full recovery. Another patient had to go to a rehab facility to learn how to walk again.

Doc said after his second Moderna shot he had a strange tingling sensation that shot down his body, followed by a hot flash from his neck down while his head was cold. Then the opposite sensation, his head flushed and felt hot while his body felt chilled. Not real temperature changes, neurological issues. Back to normal after a few minutes.

But still, like he said, either of us would take the vaccination again in a heartbeat. He has lost several patients, and said it’s a horrible way to go.

    @Amir Khalid:

I certainly intend to. I hate colds and really don’t want another case of the flu. But when I have mentioned my intention to wear a mask out in public for the foreseeable future, I get strange reactions from people I surmise are conservative Republicans.

“Why would you do that?” To not catch colds or flu I say, and they say “Well, get a flu shot!” which I do every year, have for decades now. It isn’t nearly as foolproof as the covid vaccine appears to be.

And many of these folks work in health care! Not doctors or nurses, but still. Just not willing to hear what we already know about the respective vaccines.

@sab: You can’t control anything or anyone but yourself.  By getting vaccinated, you are making the world safer from COVID.

You not getting vaccinated helps not at all.

Over half of the US won’t mask up for a pandemic that has killed almost 600K, and maimed a fair number more, why would they for the flu?
