The misinformation bubble threatening Brazil's indigenous people https://t.co/6PgPSglhI5
— BBC News (World) (@BBCWorld) May 8, 2021
… Many mobile phone operators in Brazil include free use of Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp in their payment plans, whereas use of other networks and websites incurs a cost.
WhatsApp – a common source of community and family news – presents a particular problem, experts say.
Information on chat apps tends to come from people closer to us, who we instinctively trust – but data packages discourage people, particularly the cash-strapped, from double-checking health information.
Indigenous journalist Anapuaka Tupinamba says WhatsApp enabled “a leap” for indigenous people in the areas of politics and education, but calls technology “a double-edged sword”.
“What we have today is a ‘fake’ internet. When you see fake news, you can’t check it,” Anapuaka says. “So it feels like I’m on the internet, but not really. I’m almost on the intranet of a large company.”…

There was a piece on the local tv news tonight about a vaccine clinic in the western suburbs beyond Boston, one set up specifically for 16- and 17-year-olds. The kids had to bring their parents (or a signed permission slip), and when it turned out there’d be extra shots, some of their parents were vaxx’d as well. These were adults who’d been *meaning* to make appointments, work something out to fit their schedules, but they were more than happy to take advantage. (Also, turns out that a nice chunk of Masschusetts ‘older teens’ have already been vaccinated, because the state qualified fast-food workers as ‘frontline personnel’ early in the process, and the kids working the drive-thrus did not hesitate!)
the next group to target is not the over-discussed vaccine-hesitant but the under-discussed “I’m not at risk and I’ll just wait until I don’t have to go out of my way in the slightest to get one” group. time to set up kiosks on sidewalks and give out gift cards to passers by https://t.co/OjtxMHzn1g

Ugh. As much as I detest Hagee’s politics and probably everything about him, that story is bullshit. Although he was reckless with Covid, nothing in the story indicates that he was anti-vax or that his taking the vaccine was done in secret.

@NotMax: Must be new guidance. I got mine two weeks after the second shot. They did ask if I had the shot and which side, but didn’t recommend waiting that long. It was weeks ago, and my results were normal so it didn’t matter for me.
In fact I called almost every doctor I see the day after shot 2 to schedule everything I put off. Also the hairstylist and vets office. I had cancer 7 years ago so there are a bunch of things that normally get checked yearly that I put off.
I guess I will keep this in mind if we do boosters.

My son and daughter-in-law in Chicago finally got the first vaccine (Moderna for her, Pfizer for him, they went to different pharmacies). They’re in the least urgent tier of adults to get vaccinated and I was worried they’d have to wait longer earlier this year. It’s really incredible how effectively the Biden administration was able to ramp up vaccinations. It is true though, making it even easier for young adults working long hours (or two jobs, or are single parents with kids) will get even more shots in arms.

Of course all amerikans that want a vaccine should be able to get one without appointments and even if they have no easy transport method. That all said, the large amounts of vaccines being refused by States and not needed by other States, should automatically be sent to Canada; they are fighting a still bad infection rate and besides being in our interest, they are our neighbors and in need.
satby
@Cermet: Canada and Mexico, which is in bad shape too. I would like to see some sent to India, but stuff sent already is hung up on distribution by their incompetent RW government. I wish a group like Doctors Without Borders could get the allocations of extra vaccines and do what they do best, go into difficult areas and set up vaccine clinics for the people who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to get one.

Canada and Mexico
Cermet
@satby: I left Mexico out of it because their infection rate is more than an order of magnitude lower than Canada. When Canada’s rate is lowered, certainly Mexico and then Central & South America.
Robert Sneddon
@Cermet: The Mexican published death rate is 10% of their published infection case rate (17,000 cases reported in the past 7 days, 1750 deaths over the same period. Data from Worldometer). Either there are really lethal strains of this disease circulating in Mexico or the reporting system for infectious cases has broken down as it has in India and all they have to go on is dead bodies which are easier to count.
For Canada the same numbers are 55,000 cases and 300 deaths over the previous 7 days, less than 1% fatality.

@Robert Sneddon: Yeah, I don’t believe Mexico’s infection rate is low at all.
That said, just sending vaccine doses isn’t enough–there has to be the means to get them into people, and I don’t know how you do that when the health-care system has already broken down because of government incompetence. It took us long enough to get it ramped up here.

The vaccination fiasco in India is all Modi’s doing. India successfully vaccinated its citizens for both small pox and polio with far less resources than she possesses today. Oligarchic Modi government destroyed that infrastructure.

Saturday in the UK we had 2047 new cases but bear in mind weekend reporting delays. This is a decrease of 5.2% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,
England – 1742 (down 400)
Northern Ireland – 81 (up 16)
Scotland – 224 (down 12)
Wales – Does not report on Saturdays.
Deaths – There were 5 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease in the rolling 7-day average of 26.2%. New deaths by nation, England – 5. None in any other nation (obviously).
Testing – Not updated at weekends.
Hospitalisations – Not updated at weekends.
Vaccinations – As of 7 May, a total of 35,188,981 people had received the 1st shot of a vaccine and 17,214,436 had had both. In percentage terms this means that 66.8% of all adults in the UK have had 1 shot and 32.7% were fully vaccinated.
General – Heard the list of “green” countries for travel being announced and was glad that I cancelled my holiday in “Timeless Provence”. Even if France had made the green list, the requirements for travel to those countries on the list are still quite onerous. Having a week in Matlock instead and visiting the Derbyshire Dales. This will be about 3 weeks after I get my 2nd jab.

The experience with seat belts, and especially helmets, is instructive. Resisted violently at first, by some, I’m looking at you, Gary Busey, and biker gangs, almost everyone complies now. Caught without your seatbelt on here in CA, it used to be a hefty fine. It still is I imagine. Wouldn’t know because I do it without thinking now. I hope to make mask-wearing as much of an automatic reflex as possible. If the science and predictions are right, as the population grows and global travel increases, this is probably the way the future will be. Asians have known this for years. If you went to any casinos 10 years ago you’d see them wearing masks while we thought it unnecessary. Some people even got offended.
Bill Gates was onto this 5 or 6 years ago because he was listening to the Rachel Carson’s of this microenvironment. The good news is tech seems to have provided us with the ability to cook up batches of effective vaccines pretty quickly. I intend to be buried with my mask on. But I’m going with cremation. When it comes to Public Health, people are pretty much unaware of what that is. I’m certainly not referring to anyone here. A few years back, pre-COVID, on some platform populated with American libertarian types, I was inquiring of this fellow his “libertarian” views on public health. He responded: “Oh, no we don’t support socialized medicine or subsidized health care.” The mask is still your best, effective, and safest non-invasive defense. And effective. Anyone can get one if we are prepared, and far less expensive than vaccines. But they are uncomfortable, like helmets or seat belts. What a hassle. Like condoms.
Muscle memory.
Cermet
@Robert Sneddon: Thanks for the follow up; and yes, we should share but Mexico doesn’t have Canada’s infrastructure making that issue more difficult. Pity Mexico is intentionally providing false data.
Robert Sneddon
@Cermet: It’s the data the Mexican authorities can collect, not the real data that’s out there. The US is reporting 600,000 deaths involving COVID-19 whereas the excess deaths for the period of the epidemic is over 900,000. Not all of those excess deaths were from people suffering from COVID-19 but in contrast the number of deaths from seasonal illnesses like influenza are way down over the same period because of lockdowns, social distancing, masking etc.
We had a slightly weird thing happen with our vaccination data in Scotland when it was reported a while back that we had successfully given first vaccinations to 102% of people aged 70-75. It turned out the records reporting the actual number of people in that age group in Scotland were out of date and an underestimate.

Are you sure about motorcycle helmets (nationwide)? I thought more than a dozen states eliminated the helmet requirement over the last 20 years.
Nicole
@Unique uid: More like almost the last 50 years- I googled (because I didn’t know much about it) and in 1967, the feds linked certain funding to states passing helmet laws, but in 1976 they revoked that rule and states started weakening the laws.
That said, most of them, at least, require helmets for younger riders; New Hampshire and Iowa are the only states with no helmet laws at all.
Nobody in particular
@Unique uid:
Seat belts are still de rigueur. But not on motorcycles, for obvious reasons. I had a bike for a while. And a bicycle, which I loved, but it was stolen. If you want to ride a motorcycle, have at it. Some fools still do it. But to do it without a helmet means you have no brains anyway. Or even sneakers. A friend had a day job at CalTrans. Roadkill and biker accident clean-up included. In sneakers, you can your feet and ankles into hamburger and one of his jobs was cleaning that up. I’d never ride a cycle on the highway. Off-road maybe, but I have a brain and I’d like to keep it. There are some things one does if even no law requires it.
