    Authorities are investigating the deaths of a California lobbyist and her boyfriend in connection with an hours-long standoff at the lobbyist’s Loomis home in which Placer County sheriff’s deputies shot an armed suspect.

    The Golden State Bail Agents Association said it was “shocked and saddened” to learn of the deaths of its lobbyist Kathryn Lynch and her boyfriend, Jerry Upholt. “On behalf of GSBAA, I wish to express our sorrow and sympathy over the tragic murder of our lobbyist Kathryn Lynch and her boyfriend Jerry Upholt,” Albert Ramirez, the bail agents group’s president, said in a news release Tuesday. “Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to their family and friends. Kathy was a brilliant lobbyist and her devotion to her profession and the institution of government was second to none. We are greatly honored to have worked with her and have her as part of our family.”

    A man, reportedly carrying a handgun, was shot by deputies after he ran out of a Lake Forest Drive home in Loomis, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. The man shot by deputies was hospitalized and expected to survive, sheriff’s spokeswoman Angela Mussallam confirmed. Public records show Lynch’s home address was located in the 5100 block of Lake Forest Drive, just northwest of Folsom Lake. Mussallam confirmed there were two bodies found at that Lake Forest Drive home, but she could not confirm the identities of two people found dead.

    So: If you’re wondering “well, how does all this ‘burner phone stuff play?'” this very long thread (one-page version) lays out how a group of Insurrectionists who played the Burner Phone game, got Burned. The tread’s description aligns with my awareness of how the technology works and can be traced — it’s why there were some very direct discussions about what to bring, and not, to BLM protests.

    And it does take time to work. Even moreso, as I understand it, when you’re going to be up against people who can hire attorneys to challenge this kind of evidence. So I would take in hand the comment toward the end of the thread that “This kind of forensic detective work takes time & resources”.

    But what do you get when you trace this stuff down? [Edited for clarity]:

    Next FBI see interesting phone pattern. All 4 [burner] phones were turned off on 5 Jan, in the late afternoon, very close to same time
    & about 1 hour after these phones had been turned off, one un-allocated group of militant phones were momentarily turned on

    That group of 7 Burner phones were turned on all at the same Motel 6. For about 5 minutes each. That was when this group of Oath Keepers checked their equipment and each verified their equipment (Burner phone) was operational. Image

    This means nothing, since Trump didn’t write that lawsuit; his lawyers did. Lawyers regularly use terms in their legal documents their clients don’t understand. That doesn’t mean Trump is being honest by claiming not to know what a burner phone is, just that you can’t use what someone else wrote in his name as evidence for what he does or doesn’t know.

Noem may be looking at a tough race this time too. So throwing Ravsborg under the bus is probably a smart move. I doubt if any adult South Dakotan believes Ravnsborg’s story that he thought he hit a deer. Noem is putting herself on the side of justice, which is probably a novel experience for her.

    Noem is also “taking on the establishment” by denouncing legislators from her own party. They might try to get her back, though. She’s using them, and really all South Dakotas, as stepping stones.,

    @debbie: That’s sorta true, in the sense that you pay cash for it, use it one time, or with one person only, and then properly dispose of it.

    If you can connect the phone to the person, then its utility as a burner pretty much goes away. If you can then geolocate the phone to the person, even more so.

    For normal people, that’s really freaking hard to do, and not worth the work except in serious crimes. But the President is the most surveilled person on earth. Lots of people know exactly where he is 24/7. About the only thing the president will achieve by using a burner is proving that they were aware they were in the process of committing a crime.

    In a new interview on a website that just so happens to be run by a key figure in the Ukraine scandal, Trump came out and said that Russian President Vladimir Putin should provide more purported dirt on Hunter Biden.

    Trump suggested that the Russian leader had a window into some of Hunter Biden’s work in the region, recycling an unproven claim about money flowing from the then-wife of Moscow’s former mayor to the president’s son. Trump added: “I would think Putin would know the answer to that. I think he should release it. I think we should know that answer.”

    Trump also made clear this wasn’t just an off-the-cuff comment, saying again, “I think Putin now would be willing to probably give that answer. I’m sure he knows.”

    Putin has been compiling dirt on American politicians and talking heads for what, a decade now?

    Here’s hoping that dam breaks, and soon.

    @Martin: It would interesting to know more about communications security measures in the WH.  You have to believe that there is some kind of monitoring.  It’s entirely possible that the Secret Service  monitors wireless traffic emanating from the White House for security purposes.  There could be IMSI catchers inside the WH that are on the lookout for registration requests coming from inside the building.  They presumably would know the IMSIs of  authorized phones and ignore them, but anything from a burner phone in the WH would have a IMSI that does not correspond to an authorized user and thus might be of interest.  Those comms could also be intercepted.

    @MisterDancer: You don’t really even need that many people. This is what I’ve been saying about the metadata collection. People would be blown away with what a good data scientist who knows the domain can figure out given enough data.

    Now, that can narrow things down a lot to be handed over to investigators, but they’re probably getting a dataset that is small enough that they’ll hit their target pretty quick.

    I once had an argument with someone online who was questioning that, and he mentioned how much he spent on lunch at Taco Bell and how could I glean any information from that, and within 5 minutes I told him which Taco Bell in Los Angeles he ate lunch at, and what he had. If you know how to think about data, and what this data tells us, and you have the skills, you can track these patterns down pretty fast.

    (For the lunch challenge, the total will usually tell you what the tax rate is in the area given established patterns for retail pricing, that tax rate allowed me to limit it to one area that had a ½ cent local tax over the usual CA and LA rates. There was only one Taco Bell in that tax area. And there was only one way to get to the total before sales tax looking at their menu. I got lucky that it wasn’t a state without sales tax, or a large state with a common/uniform rate, but an area that had a very unique rate, but that’s how it works sometimes. )

    For 1/6, you want call logs from all towers in range of DC hotels for the month up to and after 1/6. Isolate all numbers that first show up in the 2 days prior to 1/6 and vanish within 2 days after. Next, correlate pairs of numbers that show up on multiple towers at the same time. These are people moving in groups so you can look at bundling these numbers into a single group. Correlate that with the events of the day, the rally, the Capitol. Now you know who was there, and in which groups. You also know who coordinated their hotel stays. You can probably take an okay guess at who owns the phones by which phones vanish from the tower within a few minutes of when the burner appears on the tower, and reappears after the burner vanishes. Now you’re tying a set of burners to a set of known phone numbers. You can’t necessarily get it down to the right person, but you can thin the dataset to a point where you can tell investigators where to look for additional information – billing records for the hotels, etc.

    That’s maybe a couple of days effort for one person.
