Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

“But what about the lurkers?”

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Petty moves from a petty man.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Georgia Senate Race: Herschel Walker Makes A ‘Challenge’

by Anne Laurie|  August 3, 20229:17 pm| 60 Comments

My opponent has said if I name the place, he'd be there ready to debate.

Then I guess I’ll be seeing you in Macon on October 13th and in Atlanta on October 16th.

Is that right, Herschel Walker?

— Reverend Raphael Warnock (@ReverendWarnock) July 31, 2022

Walker says he has challenged Warnock to a debate in front of people about people pic.twitter.com/XB8XVPS6Ik

— Acyn (@Acyn) August 3, 2022

The Republican Party should be ashamed of themselves for convincing this poor soul to go out and make a fool of himself on the national stage, but taking advantage of people with head trauma / memory issues is pretty much the GOP trademark, these days…

So, I saw some headlines couple days ago claiming Herschel Walker agreed to debate Warnock. He did nothing of the sort, if you listened close. He set out a list of conditions. Now he is out with a new statement. Doesn’t sound like he wants to do anything like a “debate” to me. pic.twitter.com/gXDMILTa8W

— Ron Filipkowski 🇺🇦 (@RonFilipkowski) August 4, 2022

I wouldn’t bet on this debate ever happening, because it might be a bridge too far even for the GOP. Not out of human decency, of course, but even the Very Serious Media Pundits might find it embarrassing to defend using Walker as a figurehead to this extent.

Georgia's Senate race between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and Herschel Walker (R) is one of two races that moved from TOSS UP to LEAN D over the last week. Find out why here: https://t.co/qgqt2r5tkI pic.twitter.com/5qc0abXgmm

Elie Mystal’s been taking flak since his weekend on-air comment that “Herschel Walker will do what he’s told and that’s what Republicans want from their negroes”, but maybe he’s — not wrong?

You know what nobody has done in the four days they've been trying to make me a story… told me why Herschel Walker would make a better US Senator than Raphael Warnock.

It's almost like the people who come here to defend him don't *have* one of those reasons.

One of Mystal’s antagonists has been Lenny Dykstra, who is not the sharpest blade in the drawer, and who Mystal has been dunking on with great gusto.*

*When Dykstra played for the Mets, his nickname was Nails.  Somebody asked one of his teammates, Keith Hernandez, whether it was because Dykstra was tough as nails, and Hernandez said, no, it was because he was dumb as nails.  Dykstra never did learn not to run into outfield walls, which shortened his career, and since he left baseball he has been convicted of bankruptcy fraud (basically hiding assets when he filed for bankruptcy) and grand theft auto, in addition having a long string of other misadventures.

Reposting from the prior thread, where we had an obvious troll obviously trolling, and far too many people taking the bait. Al Rennick’s prior comments:

mistermix, This post is almost as dumb as your screen name. You’re not fit to shine John Aravosis’ shoes. You’ve reached peak toolishness.

How long will you and every other commenter and front pager keep ignoring the elephant in this room?

Biden looks and sounds incredibly decrepit and frail. The notion of re-nominating an 82 year old to serve 4 more years is insane beyond description.

Joe needs to graciously bow out of seeking a second term and put the national interests ahead of his massive fucking ego.

    And in that last thread:

Shame on you Anne Laurie and all the commenters for advancing this incredibly bad faith and intellectually dishonest argument. You’re all 100% dead wrong and Adam Kinzinger is 100% correct.

You can’t say in one breath that Trump is an existential threat to this country and then turn around in the next breath and prop up his most delusional, crackpot supporters.

This tactic endorsed by Pelosi and Biden is disgusting, despicable, and beneath contempt.

Have you people no sense of decency? If you stab Republicans in the back for voting to impeach Trump, you have no moral compass. Obviously, I want Democrats to win as many seats in Congress and in state and local offices as possible, but if they have to lose some races I want them to lose to sane, rational Republicans and not to deranged, batshit crazy MAGA Trump supporters.

You people are a bunch of fucking hypocrites and are beneath contempt.

Pie him or ignore him please, as it’s clear that he’s either delusional or a troll. Either way, he’s not arguing in good faith and certainly isn’t worth your time.

It’s actually hard for me to watch Walker’s videos. He’s clearly cognitively challenged, and Raven has mentioned on more than one occasion mental health is an issue as well. This is vile behavior from what is supposed to be one of two major political parties in this nation. Walker has as much business in the Senate as my cat, Salad, and even then, Salad would make much more sense on policy issues, particularly if you indulge him with an afternoon treat.

The people behind Walker certainly don’t love or care for him, and they see no issue with trotting him into the public glare, ill-prepared to address in any meaningful way the issues facing this country.

    It’s embarrassing.

    @PaulB:

The commentariat knows how to handle trolls, and there was no reason to carry that bullshit over from one thread to another. We left that clown downstairs, and you dragged him up here to be a scold.

You will now suffer from annoyed glares and eye rolls from across the room.

Another one of those things the political press steadfastly refuses to acknowledge: Elected Republicans are a parade of clowns, bigots, morons, and mean-spirited assholes. I don’t think we Democrats have anyone like that. If I’m missing someone, let me know.

We don’t have a Gohmert, a Gaetz, a Boebert, or a Taylor Green. We don’t have a Cruz, a Paul, a Tuberville, or a Johnson.

It’s true that we have a few – like Manchin & Sinema & that asshole congressperson whose name I forget – who put the interests of a handful of rich people ahead of the nation & democracy itself, but the entire Republican party does that.

Mom got sick and the whole gig changed. From chatting for 20 minutes every other day or so, to nothing,

Mom was sick. Mom battled back. In the interim (and it wasn’t a quick minute, it was months), home for Salad was completely different. One day he leaped through my kitchen window, snaffled some kibble and dashed back out.

Then he did it again, and again, then one day he sat on the kitchen chair and stayed overnight. He did OK for himself, and Mom and I are still friends, and the little kid is now a junior.
