Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

He really is that stupid.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Went to the orchard and SWEET TANGOES were in. Immediately called my brother and picked up 40lbs. Also picked up some nice beets, and I will be making roast beets with goat cheese, roast butternut squash with curry, and a grilled pork loin.

Also planning to pursue a career as wombat catcher.

40 lbs of apples? What are you going to do with them all?

The one time I was on jury duty, I was an alternate juror for a case where a young couple had bought a wombat from a local pet store, on credit. Apparently, just like at the car dealership, if you buy an expensive animal, you are ushered into the credit office where you are offered a loan.

They hadn’t had the wombat for more than a couple of weeks and it died (I know, shades of Monty Python). They wanted their money back, contending they were sold a sickly animal.

The pet store maintained they sold the couple a perfectly healthy animal and should continue to receive payment on the loan.

As I said, I was an alternate and ultimately I was not needed so I don’t know who won this case. I also remain ignorant of why pet stores in Cincinnati were selling wombats and why young couples of limited means (you could tell from their clothes) would want a wombat.

@Ohio Mom: @eclare: pet stores are evil. And the animals are often inbred, poorly immunized and vetted because that cuts into profits.

When I finish these two apples right here on my stand, I will have officially eaten thirty pounds of red delicious apples this season (technically they are “oregon spur” since red delicious is trademarked).”

It is one of those word math problems that I am not going to do but if Cole could eat thirty pounds of apples before the end of October, and he is splitting the latest haul with his brother, he should be apple-less way before Christmas. Maybe even before Hanukah (Thursday, December 7).

beets with goat cheese, roast butternut squash with curry

    Sounds fabulous.
Similarly, down ballot report from Iowa blog Bleeding Heartland:
”progressives win, book banners lose many Iowa school board races”

    https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2023/11/08/progressives-win-book-banners-lose-many-iowa-school-board-races/

Iowa has 2 or 3 potentially competitive US house races in 2024, neither US Senate seat up though.

Wombats do not make good pets, no matter how sweet and cuddly they look.  My late spouse was obsessed with wombats, starting with studying the British artistic circle, the Pre-Raphelite Brotherhood, which had wombat pets (short lived) and included images of them in their art.  https://www.frieze.com/article/picture-piece-rossetti-and-wombat .  To be a true lover of wombats, support a wombat sanctuary in Australia, as my late spouse did, earning the sobriquet “Wombassador”.  His favorite was: https://sleepyburrows.com.au/

I’ve had the opportunity to try Sweet Tangoes, and they’ve become one of my favorite fresh-eating apples. I will enjoy Galas most of the time, and my wife prefers Red Delicious. I have a bag of dried apples I will use in turnovers one Saturday when it’s gotten cold enough outside for me to want to use the oven more often.

@WaterGirl: i get them from Trader Joes. I think Trader Joe’s can be a little pricey on a lot of their produce but they’re pretty decent on their apples. Cosmic Crisp is the only one I’ve see at Krogers and at another local chain here.

@WaterGirl: I have been able to get SweeTangos periodically at my local Jewel and/or Mariano’s out in the western suburbs – only in season though.  Usually we try to stock up on some when we’re up in the Traverse City area.  If I see some when I’m shopping this week, I’ll let you know!
