That was an excellent respite
Really enjoyable,
Scamp Dog
I want all that furniture! Or some of it, anyway, just for the amazement value.
japa21
Thank you AL. We (at least I) needed that.
Suzanne
I am stuck on the train for another hour, ehhhhhhh.
Jeffro
@Scamp Dog: I was gonna say the same thing! WOW
Old School
That Design Solutions video is astounding.
satby
I’ve seen some of those inventive furniture solutions for sale here too, mostly places like Wayfair or Hayneedle (same company owns both, I think). For shelves in my pantry, I bought an Origami shelf system. Comes mostly assembled, you just unfold it and screw on the included caster wheels if you intend to move it. So fast and easy!
satby
And the dogs, squee! I miss owning dogs. The cats help fill the void.
Baud
The new Transformers reboot looks interesting.
frosty
@Suzanne: I dunno, you could be peering through the windshield wipers at the PA Turnpike on a cold dark night. Train isn’t so bad… if you brought enough stuff to read anyway.
SpaceUnit
@Baud:
My nephews once made me watch a Transformer movie. I have not yet forgiven them.
Chetan Murthy
@satby: What breed of dogs are those? Just curious.
opiejeanne
@Chetan Murthy: The older one looks like a long-haired dachsund. I think the puppy might be one too.
opiejeanne
My daughter had one of those chairs that turns into a step stool. It was sold by an importer in SoCal, and he called it a library chair.
Suzanne
@frosty: I’m having a hard time reading right now. Seatmate is shaking the seats.
frosty
Wow! Why can’t these guys design the interior of my next travel trailer? Much cooler than the usual dinette/bunk conversion or the jackknife sofa.
frosty
@Suzanne: Ugh, sorry to hear that. Seatmates just ruin a good travel experience. Especially the ones in the tiny airline seats next to you. At least you have a little more room. (I hope, it depends on the size of the seatmate.)
Suzanne
@frosty: He spent the first hour of the trip bouncing his heels up and down. Then the second hour opening and then closing his knees over and over. I was stressed just being in proximity.

Just took a trip down old folks memory lane courtesy of the Riverfront Times. Too much fun: What Your St. Louis Suburb Says About You
I have to say that the blurb about Des Peres is all too true:
I do. Because DP was deadville and I went to school in Kirkwood (where I became acquainted with my first black people) and spent all my free time (if I wasn’t in STL city)
Minus a couple side shots to Ontario and Wyoming I ended up in STL where I found myself living in Tower Grove South and then at least a half a dozen other neighborhoods in the city. I find most of the descriptions all too funny because they are all too accurate.
A few date me. Surprise surprise surprise.
frosty
@Suzanne: Ugh again. Amtrak needs to add Library Cars!
JaySinWA
I don’t see the utility of the sliding stairs in front of the garage. It seems to make a lot of space unusable.
The other stuff makes sense, but I don’t get that.
Alison Rose
This had me cackling: a 2015 game where the Astros’ mascot Orbit dances to “Single Ladies”, complete with a surprise outfit change and a pretty good imitation of the Beyoncé’s moves from the video.
Alison Rose
@opiejeanne: Yep, long-haired blondie sausage dogs :)
zhena gogolia
@Suzanne: See, I can’t do this any more. Train or plane. Just can’t take it any more.
Nukular Biskits
Nice palate cleansers!
CaseyL
Is that a Japanese vid, of the folding furniture? That would make a lot of sense, for so many types “origami” furniture – space is always at a premium in Japanese city homes!
And, oh, those two doggies! I don’t think I have ever seen two household animals love each other at first sight like that. The more established critter is always a bit territorial, at least at first. Such a lovely fun pair!
Lapassionara
@OzarkHillbilly: perfectamundo!

@OzarkHillbilly: I’m laughing because my friend was from Chesterfield. Yes, she was white, but oh dear lord! not boring.
Dan B
Israel approves the ceasefire!
Baud
@Dan B:
👍
SFBayAreaGal
@satby: Lover anything on wheels. So much easier to move it to another place.
A Good Woman
@Dan B:
So it appears.

@SFBayAreaGal:
The Cybertruck has wheels///////
and Apartheid Clyde has embraced Pizzagate.
Lyrebird
@CaseyL: The song and the writing are in Mandarin, fwiw.
And thanks Anne Laurie, all of this is so good!
Geminid
@Dan B: That Cabinet meeting must have gone on over six hours. I wonder if all 38 cabinet members spoke. Or from what I’ve read, yelled.
One report said the 6 Shas party members slipped away and left a note saying tbey were for the hostage deal. They are one of the two Ultra-Orthodox parties, and the Sephardic “Council of Sages” had already given them the green light.
schrodingers_cat
Unlurking to post a drawing I did this evening. I am doing a 30 day drawing challenge. I am starting simple.
Day 1
Baud
@schrodingers_cat:
Good luck.
CaseyL
@Lyrebird: I did wonder, the writing looked like Chinese characters, but the singing struck me as sounding Japanese (deeper, more gutteral).
But living space is definitely at a premium in China, too. I’ve seen photos of apartment blocks in Hong Kong that give me nightmares.
schrodingers_cat
@Baud: Thanks. Did you see the drawing at the link?
Baud
@schrodingers_cat:
Yes. Different from you usual color work. But if you’re doing 30 in 30 days, that’s what you gotta do.
Steve in the ATL
@Baud: wow—never thought you’d join eversor and Omnes in the pie filter!
schrodingers_cat
@Baud: Yes. The last prompt is a self portrait. *Shudder*
Colorful WIP just for you, which I had posted a while ago.
ETA: Also scored this set for $10
Baud
@schrodingers_cat:
Seasonal!
Martin
I’ve made some pieces like that in the first video – they’re really fun to make. They also usually don’t hold up very well because tight tolerances and complexity usually create mechanical wear unless you are VERY good at it.
It’s helped me become more of a minimalist. The best solution to not having enough space or storage is to simply desire less stuff.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steve in the ATL: Mincemeat.
Steve in the ATL
@Omnes Omnibus: speaking of which https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ajUmKS1vJl8
Omnes Omnibus
@Steve in the ATL: I see.

🎵Oh, birds just wanna have fun.🎶
satby
@opiejeanne: @Chetan Murthy: wandered off but that’s my assumption too.
zhena gogolia
@schrodingers_cat: Very nice!
schrodingers_cat
@zhena gogolia: Thanks!
Lyrebird
Yeah, the underground-parking trick thing in the first bit is what had me at first thinking it was not China, because that’s a LOT of space!
And silly me forgot that Japanese can use Chinese characters, too, but the song is saying “this is…?? this is…???”
as you might guess, I know how to say “this is” but have no clue about the rest!
Yutsano
Dat mah jongg table tho…
No One of Consequence
These are awesome, and you all are good people.
Someone I respect once told me, “The Japanese are the Masters of the Small Space.” He was continually amazed by the ingenuity of some of their design solutions, maximizing functionality with minimal materials or space required. This was especially true, he posited in their transformative design solutions, such as many of those featured in your clips.
He was a car enthusiast, who was making comparisons between luxury/performance brands, and was commenting that if he had a ways to drive, he would take his Lexus, versus other options, because it was most comfortable and had the best interior. His other options ranged from Ferrari’s to BMW’s to Audi’s, and others I’m too thick to recognize or appreciate. I noted the observation, for future reference, for when I had the problem of needing to choose which car to drive. I have not encountered this particular problem yet, but I look forward to its arrival.
Peace,

@frosty: I took an Amtrak roomette last month from NYC to DC and it was bliss. Only avail on a couple of lines, this one was going all the way to New Orleans!
Lyrebird
@schrodingers_cat: Thanks for sharing the sketch!
If you have a moment, could you say what specific things you used to make the watercolor-like backgrounds of some of your elaborate coloring projects? I tried to google what you said, and I ended up with something pretty different, crayola “cream sticks”, which are interesting but I am sure they are not what you’re using.
If someone was wishing to color with lipstick and eyeshadow, that is kinda the feel of the cream stick things.
mrmoshpotato
Surf’ssnow’s up, dude!schrodingers_cat
@Lyrebird: I have created those backgrounds with gel crayons. I have this set from Shuttle Art
I also have Faber Castell’s gelatos
I use them with ink blending brushes
(this is the brand I have)
Putting the gelatos/gel crayons on a palette and then picking it up with the brushes works far better than using them directly on paper
Hey may be I should start a YT channel art for non-artists
I am glad you like my little sketch!
Narya
Baked some test joconde today; let’s just say I’ll be making it again tomorrow. I think the culprit in that and the failed meringue on Sunday was a carton of egg whites (rather than whites from separated eggs), so I ended up buying another dozen eggs. I have so many yolks in the fridge….and will have even more tomorrow. Pastry cream, maybe…
opiejeanne
@Ivan X: We had a roomette in May of 2022 from Seattle to Chicago, and yes, it was bliss.
Lyrebird
@schrodingers_cat:
Oh, thanks for the details, and oh those look fun!
And yes, your sketch looks very professional. Maybe even crunchy! Yum!
prostratedragon
@Narya: Egg nog, if you’ve got some spirits to cure with it.
NotMax
Folding furniture, you say?
Hard to top A. Robins (27:36 – 28:15 in the video).

@NotMax
Whoopsie, unintentionally linked to the start of the whole program.. This link should go directly to the beginning of the segment mentioned above.
Kayla Rudbek
@Scamp Dog: I want all that furniture and to see the patents. Even if the writing is all in Japanese or Chinese, I still want to see the pictures and diagrams.

Nightly ritual:
I clean out the cat box late every night except on change days. Our orange cat supervises from the top of the stairs. Chuckie stays in place as long as I just scoop and level the box. If the cat box needs topping up then Chuckie heads down the stairs as soon as I grab the litter bucket after cleaning the box out. He has this need to keep the box smelling like ‘home’, I guess. Sometimes I fuck with him by adding the litter first, letting him do his duty, then cleaning the box out and adding more litter.
The little shit will hop right back in the box and squeeze out a bit more…lol!
Don
Thank you for the smiles, Anne. I look forward to your posts every morning.
LiminalOwl
@schrodingers_cat: I miss seeing your artwork (can no longer see anything on X). If you start a YouTube channel, you will make me, and no doubt others, happy.
Manyakitty
@Narya: pierogi! At least the recipe I use calls for yolks in the dough.
StringOnAStick
@Martin: One of my rules of life for dealing with climate change is buying new as little as possible, so I buy used everything when possible. When a better used option opens up to replace something, I don’t sell, I donate to Habitat so at least some of what they get goes towards affordable housing. It takes a lot more time and you definitely go through iterations but at least I didn’t create additional demand for new stuff.
BruceJ
@opiejeanne: It’s a very old design; I think I have a copy of a 1930’s Popular Mechanics DIY project to make one.
And some googling about indicates that Ben Franlin invented it
