I will add this, though. I have been talking about how much I love Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, and I love this short scene – from a dream sequence.
Maybe you have to love the show and the characters (who are police officers in 1983) to think it’s laugh out loud funny? I guess we’ll find out.
AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team
Powerful conversation between Rick Perlstein and Jeff Sharlet. One of the more insightful pieces I’ve read in a while on a root cause of broken political coverage in the big outlets.
WaterGirl
@AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team: I obviously haven’t read it yet, but this subtitle does bode well for a discussion.
AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team
@WaterGirl: yes, the piece is a deeper dive into Jay Rosen’s “view from nowhere” critique.
Which, now that I think of it, seems to parallel the paradox of tolerance. If you cling to the notion of being objective, you enable fascism, just the same as if you misapply the principle of tolerance.

@AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team: Thank you! I’m tired of MSNBC and others giving Sununu a forum to ditch Joe without asking probing questions, i.e. Why do you suppose the unemployment number is so low.
AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team
@JPL: Yes, as Rosen says they’re obsessed with the odds not the stakes.
It is freakin exhausting, isn’t it?

I did a democracy today! I voted in a local election to build a new building for the public vo-tech school.
I usually vote Yes on these things but it was kind of cemented by the most cogent argument I could find for the No side, which was basically a vivid description of all the arguments for Yes followed by “but I’m still not convinced.” And then the guy’s fans complained that the accompanying illustration didn’t have enough white people in it.

I just read the Politico piece someone posted downstairs about the CA Senate debate last night (which I completely forgot was on) and I just loved what Katie Porter said when Steve Garvey (R, former ballplayer) refused to answer whether he would vote for Trump:
“What they say is true: Once a Dodger, always a Dodger,” she said as the audience howled. “This is not the minor leagues. Who will you vote for?

@Paul in KY: You’re probably thinking of a ballista?
It’s probably fine to construct one, so long as you do it on your own property (for the catapult/trebuchet/mangonal you might have to follow some building permit rules?). If you actually load and fire it, then you’re going to almost certainly be liable for any damage or injury it causes. If you just leave it assembled in your yard, it’s possible you could be in jeopardy for attractive nuisance laws? And you absolutely, 100% cannot set something like that up to fire upon trespass.
(I’m only sort of a lawyer, so I’m probably missing some stuff)
It’s unlikely that any states have laws on the books explicitly banning ancient siege weapons, but you can still popped for the same sorts of things that nail people for not maintaining their property…

The Academy includes a lot more people than the Directors Guild. Probably more old farts, male variety who didn’t like Barbie.
The Hollywood Reporter regularly prints the ballot choices and comments of anonymous Academy members. The reason behind the omission here might be interesting.

@Paul in KY: I mean, it’s certainly possible that they would be considered deadly weapons, but there’s nothing illegal about making a longbow or forging a sword and those suckers are very deadly. They’re just not likely to be called out specifically and dangerous use is going to be covered under something else. A charge like “assault with a deadly weapon” won’t have a statutory definition of everything that could be a deadly weapon.
In the halberd example, they could be treated similarly to the person walking around with a giant knife in their hand.
It’s amazing what can be classified under negligence…

UncleEbeneezer
@Brachiator: I just mean, if I’m trying to figure out which specialist in part of my field was the best, why wouldn’t I follow the lead of the consensus of that group of specialists? Of course the answer is that Academy voters think they know more about directing than the actual Directors do, which doesn’t surprise me. It’s just dumb. Yes, there have also been articles that pointed out that many Academy voters don’t even bother to watch some of the nominated films (usually the films that are more Black and LGBTQ-centered ones).

The NY Times, it’s publisher and editors are much at fault, but I also hate how Haberman’s largely lackluster reporting has nonetheless made her a staple of pundit roundtables, where she regularly peddles political trivia about Trump. But her fellow journalists fawn all over her and love the fact that she had, and still has, close access to Trump
Nails it. The Beltway press is oblivious to the degree to which the Trump GOP and his MAGA base hate them. They can’t see the coming fascism because of their blind sense of self-importance.

In partially explaining them, consider there are many people in this country who like him because they are his chosen target audience and he makes them feel…. important. For them, that’s valuable and useful for their lives.
Others might get the same through wealth and extravagance or academics, talents, etc. There are pecking orders all over the place, but over the years, the MAGA folks fell short of them, mostly. In that vein, I think they consider him a ‘savior’ (many have found themselves on the losing side generally, sooo yay. finally!),’ of sorts.
It also provides validation for their anger and attendant blaming.
Brachiator
@UncleEbeneezer:
I have mixed feelings about this. Many Academy members do know a lot about directing, and even when they don’t, their own expertise can still be illuminating. But then again, many voters use their ballots to express jealousy or to settle scores. And there is also the sexism where women directors are concerned.
Also, in years past, few outside the industry ever knew or paid attention to the awards handed out by SAG or the Producers Guild, so there was little basis for comparison.
Oh yes, this can be a problem. From a 2019 Vanity Fair piece.
And this is even more egregious…
