@Chief Oshkosh:
I read that Newsom signed a fast food minimum pay increase that exempts chains that bake their own bread on premises as of a certain date so that other chains can’t jump on the cheap labor train. A cut out for a billionaire buddy of his, as it is being put. The buddy was against the measure but not now.
If true then Newsom is an asshole for doing this. I’m waiting for more to develop but it doesn’t look good.
KrackenJack
@Chief Oshkosh: Newsome has a history of sketchy sweetheart deals and this one has an odor about it as well; and it’s not fresh-baked. Why do fast food restaurants that bake bread on site need an exemption from the minimum wage?
Anyway, the controversy is making his administration backtrack:

Here’s the long version.
The short version is, the law was passed and signed into law to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers. But restaurant workers are not fast food workers, so they stay at the current minimum wage. But wait, what about hybrid food sellers, like Panera bread? Newsom’s close long-time friend and donor owns 24 Panera Bread franchises in California and has Newsom’s ear. Was he influential in changing Panera from fast food to restaurant designation? Republicans say yes, big scandal. Newsom says no, no scandal, in fact Panera is not exempt.
Only the magic 8 ball knows for sure.

Funny thing is, it’s not true.
The exemption is for bakeries that make their own dough on site and bake it, there for, are exempt from being “fast food” entities.

@cain: I’m in exile in Arizona and miss Massachusetts so much. Especially the mom-and-pop bakeries that populate southeastern Massachusetts. In Fall River, I had four bakeries I could walk to in ten minutes. If I walked five minutes more, I’d trip over at least three more bakeries.
Too far to walk but Fall River also has two – count them! – two Middle Eastern bakeries. Oh, do I miss the open and closed meat pies and open cheese pies and Maneesh and beautiful, soft, thin, fragrant pita bread.
The donuts were closer to home. The pork pies and Portuguese sweet bread a short stroll from the donuts.
One of my favs was a bakery that had little egg salad, tuna salad and chicken salad sandwiches on little rolls. I guess you kids these days would consider them “sliders.” Everything made on premises from scratch.
If you have a proper bakery that you frequent, let them know how much you appreciate them, because they are jewels of incomparable, immeasurable value.

@karen marie:
having done distribution for 3 commercial bakeries over the years, I learned that a lot of small bakeries, don’t bake everything or make everything from scratch. They buy products from other bakeries, baked or flash frozen, and only bake from scratch their own specialties and use the flash frozen “base” to assemble their own unique products.

@Chetan Murthy: We need to remember that Newsom used to be married to Don Jr’s girlfriend. The minute he’s nominated she’ll be out with daily reminiscences of what a terrible weirdo husband he was. Doesn’t need to be true. The media would Hunter Biden’s laptop it all the way to Election Day.

A more grown-up cheese-adjacent alternative? ;)
Baby Doe’s Beer Cheese Soup
8 c Milk
2 tsp Tabasco sauce
4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 tbsp Chicken base
16 oz Cheez Whiz
6 tbsp Cornstarch
1/3 c Water
1 c Beer
1/8 tsp MSG
Cayenne pepper
.
Combine milk, Tabasco, Worcestershire, chicken base, & MSG. Bring to a boil, stirring regularly.
Add Cheez Whiz, after warming in hot water or in microwave. Mix in well.
Dissolve cornstarch completely in the water. Add to soup, which should thicken immediately. Reduce heat a bit and stir in beer.
To serve, ladle into bowls and dust with cayenne pepper. Source
Chetan Murthy
@NotMax: I appreciate the attempt, but there’s no way I’m cookin’ with Cheez Whiz. As it is, I’m probably going to throw away the other pound of Velveeta, as well as the pint-and-change of leftover soup. My next attempt will be to find a recipe that uses actual cheddar.

here we don’t have “carve outs” for wage categories. Waiters get at the worst, minimum wage + tips.
Even Salaried workers have protections. OT is accrued as “banked time” at the same rate as wage workers. The employer can opt to pay it out when they want, or they have to pay it off every year.

@Jay: In MO tipped workers make half the regular minimum wage, which is $12/hr. The employer has to make it up if the tipped worker doesn’t make the $12/hr minimum between their hourly and tips. Hi, everyone. This is a Big Movie weekend for me.
Just saw “Poor Things” tonight. Based on what I knew of the story, it was not on my list of movies to watch. But a friend wanted to see it, and it has certainly gotten glowing reviews, so we went.
I was wrong about the movie, so very wrong. It is a demented delight. There are squicky bits, but not nearly as many or as bad as I feared. I don’t want to say too much, as it’s best seen unspoiled. Strongly recommend: the movie is as good as it’s said to be.
And tomorrow I go with a different friend to see “Dune Part 2.” She was going to see it with another friend of hers – they’d made plans earlier in the week. I did not ask her to invite me along – I did want to see it, but hadn’t made any concrete plans yet, and don’t impose myself on other peoples’ outings. But I did ask if she was familiar with the book, or had seen Part 1. No, she said, neither. To which I said she absolutely and positively had to go online to find recaps of Part 1, or she wouldn’t know what the hell was going on. I tried to give her a (very brief) outline – at which point she decided I simply had to see the movie with her and her friend. And so I am.
Wheee! I’ve seen more movies in theaters in the past few months than in the previous three years. Kinda cool.

Went into the city with my younger niece to have dinner and see The Book of Mormon. It was lovely. Went to Meat and Potatoes, a nice Castro pub, and had steak frites. The show was so much fun. Niece is going to France in a few weeks and is very excited. A week each in Germany and France. Then she graduates in May with her degree in nuclear medicine and already has a job offer with a $30k signing bonus. I’m so proud of her! And we have such fun together. Gotta try to set up some time with older niece soon. She’s even more difficult to get time with because she’s just went back to school for her RN. Plus she works as a private aide to an elderly woman and as an aesthetician. Oh, and she has three kids under the age of five and a husband. But she turns 30 this year and I need to make it a special year for her. She killed it this past semester, so I’m massively proud of her, too. I love being the cool aunt.

@eclare: Israeli journalist Barak Ravid does good reporting on this matter in Axios and on Twitter. Ravid has good sources in both the U.S. and Israeli governments.
Al Jazeera is also good, especially because the Qatari government is a key party to the negotiations and Al Jazeera is owned by the Qatari government. Whenever Prime Minister al Thani has something important to say, an Al Jazeera reporter comes and very respectfully interviews him. The Qatari PM never has to worry about reporters shouting at him.
Prime Minister al Thani has involved himself personally in these negotiations and serves as interlocutor with Hamas. CIA Director William Burns has represented the U.S., and Mossad head David Barnea reps the Israeli government. The fourth player is Egypt’s intelligence chief, representing President al Sissi. Some hard men working a hard problem.

@Baud: Many observers thought that President Biden jumped the gun then, and he may have. Evidently we now are close to a ceasefire but there are potential stumblig blocks.
One is that while Hamas leaders in Qatar are negotiating it’s the leadership in Gaza that must deliver, and they might not want to or even be able to. And they may not agree as to numbers and status of the 400 prisoners Israel has offered to exchange for 40 abductees.
Last December, the shorter truce and prisoner exchange hit a snag a couple days in. During a day’s hiatus a Qatari government plane flew into Ben Gurion airport. Speculation was that it was Qatari intelligence officials conferring directly with Hamas leaders in Gaza, and then with Israeli officials.
Then the exchanges resumed, and the Qatari jet flew back home after stopping in Cyprus first. Qatari planes do not fly directly to or from Israel.
This time negotiators are staying nearby in Egypt. Hamas representatives there presumably can contact the leadership holed up in southern Gaza.

@Princess:…as noted before, …humans do often go a long way to justify continuing habits that aren’t in their best interests.
Because many food additives are found in many foods doesn’t in any way speak to whether they should be there.
Because of loopholes within the FDA’s regulations, corporations can ‘self certify’ additives and it’s only afterwards we find that many of those additives previously designated safe were and are anything but.
Food is not food additives, food additives are most likely in processed food because it increases profits for corporations, not because they are safe for you to ingest.
When we learn that accepted past practices are not safe as was imagined, it pays to pay attention to what the new information can tell us.
