Today is my dog’s fifth birthday: All Hail Queen Daisy!
She is a complicated creature, loyal and sweet to human beings but scary and overbearing toward other animals. And an accomplished chicken terrorizer.
To celebrate her birthday, I will prepare the traditional “bacon cake,” which is a blob of Alpo topped with canned gravy and encased in bacon. My other dog will also get a bacon cake because dogs don’t get the concept of birthdays, and it would be mean to leave her out.

Several years ago I started making homemade dog cookies for the mutts, and now they won’t eat the commercial variety. With four dogs, “cookies” is at least a weekly project, if not more often.

Doesn’t it seem a little strange for Harvard grad, Matt Yglesias, to be advocating for lower quality/lower cost university education as a better value?

As an update to the Towson “White Student” group situation, here is the latest letter from the president.
TSU’s “White Student Union” has apparently begun patrolling campus– message is being sent on behalf of Towson University President Maravene Loeschke:
I want to directly address the recent news of a White Student Union organization, once again claiming roots at Towson University. The Division of Student Affairs continues to clarify that there is no established or recognized “White Student Union” (WSU) on Towson University’s campus. While a Towson University student attempted to form a recognized group in the fall, it failed to meet the university’s requirements for gaining recognition. In response to the establishment of the “WSU crime patrols” at Towson University, Towson University Police Department (TUPD) continues to maintain their vigilance to keep our campus safe. The University does not endorse and strongly discourages patrols by this or any other student group.
Towson University continues to be one of the safest campuses in the University System of Maryland. To ensure that the entire campus community continues to feel safe and comfortable, the TUPD is increasing its presence on campus during the evening hours. We will continue to work with students who feel threatened by the proposed activities of this group to ensure their safety.
The views of this non-affiliated group are diametrically opposed to the core values of Towson University and our commitment to diversity and non-discrimination. The exchange of ideas is a hallmark of higher education, but at times this exchange includes opinions that are offensive and hurtful to many. Please know that we are working tirelessly to monitor and address this challenging situation.
Dr. Maravene Loeschke

Taking the day off for work – hurray for me! I’ve used the time so far to pick up a few bottles of the ‘Games of Thrones’ beer Ommegang made…looking forward to sampling that.
I also went for a 4.5 mile run and proceeded to get hit by a car within the first mile while crossing a street. This assclowm was wearing a Bluetooth and was probably the reason he missed me, even though I was running towards him, while the pedestrian walk signal was on. I shouted no shortage of f-words at this turd for about 30 seconds before resuming my run…thankfully was able to rappel myself off the front of his car when he slammed the breaks, so I didn’t wind up on my ass or hurting myself.

@Rustydude: How is it that much different than the people who suggest going to a community college for two years and transferring to a state school as opposed to going to, let’s say, Northwestern for four years? The suggestion is that if you get 7/8 of the value for half the price, might it not be worth it?
Burnspbesq
@sparrow:
It’s really tempting to say that if the Towson White Students Union is seriously interested in reducing campus crime, they should volunteer to patrol the Morgan State campus. I’m sure they’d be welcomed with candy and flowers.

@Burnspbesq: I hate to pile on ‘dumb country folk’, but if you haven’t gone out in rural parts much it’s easy to forget how different people are from in the cities. I drove down to Atlanta once and stopped at a hole-in-the-wall cafe in the middle of nowhere. I had a nalgene bottle with water in it on the table, because you know, I like to stay hydrated when I drive 12 hours. The waitress kept staring at it and eventually asked, “um, what is that? is that like some kind of sample or something?” — apparently she saw the volume marks in METRIC and thought it was some kind of science experiment. Hilarious.

@Rustydude: We’re having that discussion with my oldest right now: He’s a Senior. He’s been accepted to Hofstra and some other non-Texas universities along with a few in state. The problem with those schools is that at the end of his bachelors, he will owe between $70 and $100K in loans, and what he wants to do really requires a higher degree. So we’re having a discussion over what he can really expect to get for paying for the name of a university.

@sparrow: Shorter Towson Official: we recognize that a controversial shooting/beating/assault is almost certain to happen in the near future, and it’s a shame we will not take action to ban this group, even though we almost certainly can. P.S., dont sue me, sue Maryland.

@Punchy: Hopefully, it works out that way. Sounds like Kennedy is indicating he sees it as states rights issue and the other four see an equal protection issue. What you see at oral argument doesn’t necessarily indicate what the decision will be, but this is comparatively good news.

@Rustydude: I just chalk this up to bad luck and an idiot driver…first time I’ve gone for any kind of run in a year or so. The worse thing about it is that he accelerated into the turn, right in front of a mother pushing her baby in a walker…so he really was not paying attention at all.
The only thing I regret is that I may have caused a few parents to explain why the young-ish looking man saying bad words was in the right.

@Omnes Omnibus: So in all likelihood, it sounds like we’ll get DOMA struck down and gay marriage legalized in CA?
Not a Brown v. Board of Ed moment, but it’s progress. I feel like we’re only going to get widespread change from the Supreme Court if we get a liberal majority. Since Roberts is going to be on the court for probably another 30 years or so, I don’t think we’ll ever get a unanimous ruling in favor of SSM.

@Burnspbesq:
A Muslim could use the mop sink for ritual ablutions without causing any inconvenience whatsoever to custodial workers. As long as the sink is kept clean, and I’m sure it will be, it will be perfect for that. It would certainly be a lot easier than lifting one’s foot to the tap in a regular sink. If only public toilets here in Malaysia had mop sinks like that.
Are these Tennessee legislators bigoted enough to insist on building regulations forbidding Muslims to use these sinks for religious purposes? Because I don’t see how such regs would pass muster.

Happy birthdog to Daisy! Our Wendy, adopted from a local shelter, was originally named April in honor of her birthmonth, but we have no specific date and just pick April Fool’s Day to give her a special chewie wrapped in tissue paper. She also gets a similar gift on Christmas so she doesn’t feel left out. The two cats seem oblivious to celebrations, so they get treats randomly.

@TaMara (BHF): I have been making our dogs’ (a boxer and a Boston terrier) wet food for a couple of years now, and we mix that with good kibble for their meals. I got the recipe from a nutritionist we used to buy the food from until she moved away (Pet Edibles was the brand name). It is a good ritual – and the dogs always help me in the kitchen.
