The hapless Tampa Bay Bucs just took a three point lead over the abysmal Atlanta Falcons! I was kinda hoping the Bucs would throw the rest of their games and position themselves to acquire Jadeveon Clowney, the ‘Cocks’ monster defensive end, in the draft. It could still happen.

Betty, I left this message for you down below.
We are winning the race to the bottom. Our backup running back is out due to trying to eat his marijuana stash in front of a police officer.

Thanks, Betty!! I think the Steelers have found a way to play well this year: wear their Halloween jammies when playing. Maybe the stripes have magical powers.
Yatsuno
Seachickens vs the Vikes. AKA the game that could lead to me and wifey divorcing if Minnesota were decent this year.
Shit, home game. So much for going on a TJ’s run…
PS: tornadoes in Chicago? But Algore is fat!
Mnemosyne (iPhone)
We had a lovely weekend getaway, but we start heading home today. Sigh. Back to the grind tomorrow.

This is one of four weeks in the NFL season when I root for the Washington
RedskinsSomethings. (i.e. when they’re playing either the Cowboys or Eagles). Of course, they’re down already.AdamK
Are you ready for some CTE? Yay!
Betty Cracker
@JPL: Who? I didn’t hear about that!
Gator90
Even the lowly Bucs were able to beat the Fighting Incognitos, who, amazingly, remain in playoff contention at least for now. Go Fins!
Violet
Hey, you could be a Texans fan. They specialize in losing in the second half after having any kind of lead in the first. Even the coach collapses at the half (mini-stroke, no kidding).
S. cerevisiae
@Yatsuno: Lord this could be sooooo ugly. At least the Wild are good this year and play right after. GO WILD!
lamh36
Go Saints!
So, ok, when looking for a used car. Besides pricing male and model, what else would/do you look for? My main question: how many miles max would you look for? My current car has 95000 miles on it after almost 8 years. I’d prefer less than 30k, but at least 1/2 of my current miles…so like 45k
Violet
@lamh36: Spend the money to get the Carfax on it. That’s the main thing, especially if buying from any kind of a dealer. They lie–happened to a friend of mine. If you are in any area near a recent flood, make sure you get the car checked out for flood damage. A lot of cars that go through floods are re-sold as not going through a flood and it’s a lie.
Sure it’s a car you are looking for? Heh.
Betty Cracker
@lamh36: Depends on the car and the type of mileage. I had an old Volvo tank that was still running with 500K miles when I gave it up. It probably rolls still!
Betty Cracker
Tampa scores again!
JPL
@Betty Cracker: The Falcons backup, Jason Snelling. The police stopped him
and smelled marijuana and then looked in his mouth. He was trying eat the evidence.
JPL
Well good job Falcons.
Yatsuno
@Betty Cracker: My brother has a 1997 Volvo with over 250K miles on it. That thing still runs like a champ, although he rents cars for longer trips now. I think the only major issue it had was a transmission glitch that got fixed & has never popped back up. Volvos before Ford are workhorses.
@lamh36: Definitely get the Carfax and also spring for an independent mechanic inspection if you don’t have a car savvy family member. It’s about $100 but it could save you thousands down the road.
Also: look at retired rental vehicles. They usually have really good mileages, aren’t that expensive, and the rental companies maintain the bejeezus out of them. My car started life that way and other than routine stuff I haven’t had problem one.
Violet
@Yatsuno: Yeah, a friend of mine got a good deal on a former rental car and that things ran great.
Mnemosyne (iPhone)
@lamh36:
If you’re planning to finance any of it, see if you can get pre-approved for a loan from your bank or credit union before you shop. The subprime loan scams have started up again (where they steer people who qualify for prime loans into subprime ones) only this time it’s cars, not houses. And, yes, it’s generally minorities who are being victimized, so you need to be extra careful. ?
Baud
@lamh36:

@Betty Cracker:
It’s amazing how durable some old cars can be. I saw my late father’s mid-1960s Peugeot (the same model number as Lt Columbo’s, but a four-door hardtop version rather than the two-door convertible Peter Falk drove) on the street in the late 1980s, many many years after he sold it.
JPL
OMG, The Falcons couldn’t beat GA Tech, this week.
J.
I had to stop watching the Jets game. Too painful. Hard to believe this is the same team that beat the Saints a couple of weeks ago. Meh. Hope the Giants game is better. (And yes, I go both ways, Jets and Giants.)
Baud
@JPL:
They’ll play well against the Saints on Thursday. Always seems to happen no matter what.
Roger Moore
@lamh36:
I think people’s ideas about mileage are out of date. 100K just isn’t that much anymore. You may be off setting a budget and then trying to meet it rather than targeting a specific age and mileage and then seeing what it costs.
Baud
@J.:
Saints have been wildly inconsistent this year, particularly the O-line.
gene108
@lamh36:
If there’s a CarMax near where you live?
They have a good reputation for selling good used cars.
I got 1 year old rental fleet retiree, Mazda 626, from them, back in 1999 and it ran without any problems.
Yatsuno
@Roger Moore: My car just broke 50K. It’s still running beautifully.
Keith P
@Violet: 100% correct, and I’m from Houston. There’s something about this city that makes our teams disappoint. I firmly believe Houston is still Choke City, and the Texans have exemplified that this season. I get die-hard Houston fans all kinds of pissed off when I mention this, but it’s the truth, and it has been since at least the Oiler days.
Gravenstone
CBS sports just doesn’t know where to turn in my region right now. Bears/Ravens game is currently suspended due to weather, so they give us Bills/Jets. That one is turning into a laugher for the Bills, so now they’ve shifted to Browns/Bengals.
raven
@lamh36: Always have an independent mechanic that you PAY do a buyers check and make sure they do a compression test and that all of the cylinders are within 5lbs of each other.
max
Geez. It ate the comment?

[‘I didn’t mention male genitalia. Guess it was the words involving vehicular devices.’]

Rather than watching a game right now- I’m waiting for the Broncos/Chiefs this evening- I’m going through photos from my recent trip to the National Parks of Utah. It was a great trip. Early November is a great time to go, because it’s had a chance to cool down enough to make good hiking weather and the major crowds are finally starting to disperse. I’m still geeking out over having visited Upheaval Dome, the remains of a ~160 million year old meteor crater.
Gravenstone
@Gravenstone: And now the Bengals are hammering the Browns, running off 28 unanswered points. Wonder what bottom feeding pairing we’ll be shunted to next?
ruemara
OK, for all the tech savvy types on this blog. Why in the fucking fuck is my NAS constantly changing IP? It’s only consistent when I’m hard connected. Worked fine all this while and with the new dual band, the NAS and the wireless printer are freaking out and costing me a lot of valuable time trying to fix things. I’m running windows 7, both have the correct ssid, the router says the IP is one thing, but the drive’s networking software gives me a different ip and can’t connect without ethernet. Then it’ll correct, stay connected for a bit, then disappear again. I was hoping to get some work done, instead I’m considering shooting the drive. and the printer. some sort of techno mass murder spree with an electron gun.
Brendan in Charlotte
@J.: Don’t worry. As a Bills fan, i can tell you that we’ll let you back in it soon enough…
Roger Moore
@ruemara:
Do you have it set up to use DHCP? If you do, it may be getting reassigned by the router. You’d be better off setting it to have a static IP.
Spike
@Gravenstone: And now they’re back to Chicago, where Phil Simms is channeling his inner Jim Cantore.

Fresh Sunday Kitten for the open thread.
HinTN
@lamh36: You can buy a Camry with 100k miles if they are road miles (not NOLA street miles) with confidence you will get AT LEAST another 100k. I’ve bought four like that and taken them to 300k
Geoduck
@dedc79:
I prefer “The Racial Slurs”.
HinTN
@raven: Also excellent advice, although I have a great working relationship with my local Toyota service department and they do all my maintenance.
ruemara
@Roger Moore: Did that. Would not appear even when connected. Then it reset to the new IP. Now it’s holding steady after a reboot of both systems and some downloaded updates, but it is still invisible to the network.
BruceFromOhio
@Gravenstone: Fuck off. It takes a special talent to hand a defense 14 points in back-to-back possessions. Not sure what that talent is supposed to be, but the Browns got it by barrel.
AxelFoley
I’m surprised no one touched this.
lamh36
@gene108: yes. There is a carmax. I’m Def looking there. My current car is a 2005 Hyundai Tucson. Aside from needing new tires and brake pad replacement, it’s in relatively good condition. I figured I’d use it for the trade in value, but I admit I’m having sentimental issues with selling/trading it. It’s the very first car I bought paid for and owned all by myself.
Gator90
@AxelFoley: I used to know a guy who went to S. Carolina. He had a T-shirt that said “You Can’t Lick Our Cocks!” He was very proud of it.
raven
@HinTN: Yea, if you have a mechanic there that would not have a stake in the sale and just examine the vehicle thoroughly that would work.
raven
@lamh36: Trade-in’s are usually a ripoff but carmax is pretty cool because a trade can be made independent of the purchase. Selling through craiglist or buy putting a sign on it can bring more dough but there are a lot of creeps out there.
negative 1
@Yatsuno: Sea! Hawks! Sea! Hawks! Was actually responding to the second part of your comment though — the local chuckleheads on my (Boston area) sports talk radio said the same thing, then did the audio equivalent of rolling their eyes. I really hate our local sports radio.
AxelFoley
@Gator90:
LOL, I’d hate to see a T-shirt from a bad season.
“Our Cocks Suck!”
Redshirt
@AxelFoley: Too easy.
Also, break up the Bucs!

Anyone in the paths of the storms in the midwest?
I am and both of my kids in different cities are though it is passed through my daughter’s town already.
It does not look good.
J.
@Brendan in Charlotte: Spoken like a true Bills fan. ;-)
J.
@Baud: You could say the same about the Jets O-line, and their defense, too. :-(
jharp
Wow. These storms coming across Indiana are amazing.
Holy fuck. It is not good. Tornadoes on the ground.
Svensker
@J.:
Not sure inconsistent is the word you’re looking for here…
Hey, Simms. Did the Bills put in their 3rd string? Or was that the Jets’ O actually doing something?
Tommy
@jharp: Yeah. Just outside St. Louis. High winds (no rain or hail), maybe around 65 MPH, but honestly not as bad as some other areas got or the news is reporting. Which clearly is a good thing.
Tommy
Well my team based in DC officially sucks. I keep trying to keep a positive mental attitude but it is really, really hard. Second game the local station in St. Louis has shown of them, and in both not long after halftime they went to another game cause they were getting stomped into the ground.
Steeplejack (tablet)
Dang, the Washington [Redacted] are coming back. Two TDs with two-point conversions, and now they’re behind 24-16 with 5:30 to go.
Steeplejack (tablet)
@Tommy:
Well, the game has heated up now.
JPL
@jharp: Stay safe
Tommy
@Steeplejack (tablet): And my local station has not cut back to it. They switched to the Steelers and Lions game early into the second half of the Washington game. Off to the NFL Redzone channel I guess.
YellowJournalism
@AxelFoley: I would love to see what the opposing team had for T-shirts. “Your Cocks are kind of small.”
The most clever thing we had was “FUW.”
gene108
@lamh36:
Brakes and tires need replacing. Even in newer cars this will happen eventually.
Maybe get a mechanic you trust to check it out and see if anything else needs replacing other than the brakes and tires. If it’s just brakes and tires, you might be O.K. in keeping it awhile longer.
jharp
Tornadoes to the north and tornadoes to the south.
Just a regular massive thunderstorm with 70 MPH winds is headed my way.
It’s about 3 miles out.

@efgoldman: Just wait till it snows in DC. “GLOBAL WARMING? HAHAHA LIBTARDS!!”

@efgoldman: Chicago Tribune has some pictures of Washington, IL. It looks like Sooner’s neighborhood but not as large.

@jharp: I was, so were friends south of me. Only tree damage by me, lost the tops of 4the large pines, but in Coal City, Eashington, and Diamond IL bad tornados. They think there’s people trapped in wreckage in Coal city.
jharp
All is clear in greater Indianapolis. Watch out east.
satby
@satby: Washington, Il. I’m sitting in my car to charge my phone, power went out about 2to hours ago. Hard to edit on mobile.
jharp
Holy shit.
Right after I posted that the winds blasted through worse than ever.
Very weird. Dark clouds and sun and wind. Spooky. And sheets of rain. And rainbows.
On November 17th.

@efgoldman:
I was in north central Ohio during the blizzard of ’78.
That thing was amazing. It took my town 10 days to get dug out. And a tractor trailer with driver inside was buried in a snow drift for 13 days. He survived by eating snow.
satby
@jharp: yep. Second bad blow coming through now… got the heck out of the car and back into the house. Won’t get power any time soon, it’s way too windy for the linemen to fix live lines in this.
raven
@jharp: Ft Knox, KY for the blizzard of 67. My old man had to jump out a second story window in their house in the Chicago burbs.
Geoduck
Watching the Seahawks and Vikings.. every time I see the Viking QB, I have to think of the Discworld character Ponder Stubbins.
raven
Well, Da Berz won anyway.
James E. Powell
@jharp:
I was in north central Ohio during the blizzard of ’78.
I was a student at Ohio State. A large area east and north of campus had no electric power for a few days. We had to leave our apartment and find friends who could take us in.
Baud
Saints do not care about their fans’ heart health.
jharp
@James E. Powell:
My brother was a student at Ohio State that year. 14th and High area.
Fellow Buckeye here. Lived mostly east of campus.
Do you recall that if you had an Ohio High School diploma they had to admit you in those years?
And tuition was less than $300 per quarter and a 19 inch color television was $400.
Oh, and the needle to play records was $100.
kindness
The announcers sure seem to want the Saints to win.
Hawes
@kindness: What else is new? Once upon a time, the Superdome was the scene of an American tragedy, so we are supposed to forget that Sean Payton is an oxycontin snorting asshole control freak who levels bounties on opposing players.

To Betty and any Falcon fans.
Bob-by Rain-ey! Bob-by Rain-ey.
At least that was the chant when he would be fed the ball the run out the clock in the fourth quarter of his college games at WKU.
If the Bucs didn’t want to win games, they shouldn’t have picked him up. Ravens and Browns loss is Tampa Bay’s gain.
burnspbesq
@YellowJournalism:
That’s actually better than “Duck Fuke,” but not as good as the “Spay the Terriers” gear that Boston College folks break out for their games against Boston University.
CaseyL
Went down to a friend’s housewarming/football watching party in Tacoma. The drive there and back went through spots of torrential rain. This is Seattle; it’s supposed to rain in the winter (… and spring, and summer, and autumn); but the last 7 years the winter rains have been more like monsoons.
The ‘Hawks won just the way I like: took a big lead early, and kept adding to it. None of this come-from-behind-in-the-4th-quarter stuff. Getting some of the first string offensive line players back from IR helped.
Jackie
The Seahawks won; SF lost. Good wknd. I hate the ‘Hawks going into bye week at this stage. Next team NO, then SF in SF. Too much time off when team is just getting 100% = poor timing.
Enjoying the Denver/KC game – torn equally between who I want to win.
Steelers uniforms ugliest in football history. They won because they creeped out the Lions in those break-out-of jail unis.
PaulW
As a fellow Bucs fan, I’m not sure what we need to draft in the first round in 2014, what I do know is that Schiano is not a very good coach and ought to be fired #FireSchiano at season’s end. Because of this two-game win streak against not-very-good teams, the buzz to fire the coach(es) (save the RB coach who seems to be the only one who knows what he’s doing) has died down a little bit, but upcoming games versus very good teams – Lions, 49ers, Panthers, Saints – ought to highlight the problems with Schiano – lack of on-field discipline, ultraconservative game schemes that lead to Second Half chokes – and end up with enough losses to demonstrate he’s not working out as HC.
