A beautiful bunch, one and all!
From commentor JackMac:
About 2,000 people attended a march through downtown Rockford, Ill. last Saturday. My favorite sign from the day.
From commentor ST:
Portland, Oregon. Over 100,000 estimated attendees. Zero arrests, and security provided by some antifa as well as police. No black bloc!

Phoenix. A great time was had by all!

Here are some photos from the beautiful day we had here in Nashville, 15,000 strong at the Women’s March 2.0!

This is part of the crowd in Frederick, MD on Sunday. Filled up “the Creek”. Didn’t get a pic of my favorite sign: “I fix toys, dinner, and boo-boos. In Nov. I’ll fix Congress.”

I like how some of the March For Science messaging (thinking, facts, etc) is leaking into the much more visible Women’s March. I attended the Science march last year. The message was “policy should be evidence-based”. I’m not sure how much progress they’ve made on that front. I don’t think you’ll ever convince a GOP politician of that, so the only answer is more and better Democrats.
Edit to add: That post came off more negative than I intended. I was really overjoyed to see the huge turnout for the Women’s March this weekend, and I am very optimistic about the Democratic Wave this fall, largely driven by newly-activist women.

Lovely photos. Good to know that so many BJ commenters are active when it comes to the Resistance. Protest marches are great and now we can mobilize to take down the GOP and flip Congress.

I had to work last Saturday, so I missed out on the Women’s March in Downtown Dayton. But my husband and his sister went, and they were thrilled to see more than the predicted 3500 attendees. They said the crowd was upbeat and energized.
The local news had small coverage, and I wish it had gotten more exposure. We can’t engage more people in the voting process if they don’t feel the energy of resistance. It just occured to me that you can’t have “resistance” without a “stance”.

In other news, the GOP is tipping its hand on how it plans to welch on yesterday’s deal…

@Timurid: No surprise that we will find ourselves back to the same place three weeks from now. Racist thugs control the House. Getting affirmative legislation out of the House requires someone, specifically, Paul Ryan, to care about something other than giving blow jobs to wealthy donors, something I would not hold my breath waiting for. Notwithstanding all that, there is no evidence in my view that shutting down the government does anything to make a positive resolution more likely. I wish it were otherwise but I will not wish myself into delusions of greater power than we actually have.
Jack McCarthy
Hey Anne Laurie, thanks for running my photo! And I love all the images you’ve posted.

@Timurid: Not a shock. The fact that people need to be reminded of how depraved, craven and indifferent to human life they are, that’s why Dems are doing this.
Congrats to all who marched. I was chained to a desk, working on my fellowship application script, so, glad to see everyone out.

Kinda off-topic, but those bastards at the Oscars totally snubbed Wonder Woman movie.
By the by, they nominated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for, like, Best Tree Sprout or something, but NOOOOOOOOO one of the most relevant cultural icons of the century doesn’t even get looked at for Best Costuming (FOR CHRIST’S SAKE! ALL THAT AMAZONIAN ARMOR! The Edwardian fashions of wartime Europe! DAMN THEM!).
I’m also miffed Hugh Jackman didn’t get nominated for Best Actor in Logan. So yeah, I’m starting a riot.

Marched in St. Louis on Saturday. Great crowd, great signs, and the same determined vibe as last year. The resistance is still strong and hopeful.

@Timurid: My guess is the House will forward something like the appalling draft that was circulating last week from that vile asshole Goodlatte and fellow travelers. It was probably too punitive to pass the Senate — it reduced eligibility drastically, did not provide a path to citizenship and basically reduced Dreamers to “indentured servant” status by levying fees and fines. That’s the pile of shit the Senate is going to have to reconcile if anything is to be done at all.

Didn’t get a pic but the one that made me laugh hardest in Chicago had a pic of The Boy King followed by the caption, “Does this ass make my sign look fat?”

Great pix. Here are some of the pix I took from the Los Angeles march last Saturday:
The crowd marching down the street and rounding the corner
The crowd standing after the march (too far from the stage to hear the speakers)
“I’ve Seen Smarter Cabinets at IKEA”
The rest of the best (hope this link to a folder works)
Overall, it was a positive event with remarkable marchers and speakers. I spoke to some of the marchers, and for many of them this was their first March — they did not attend the March last year. I spent seven hours on my feet, but it was worth it.

It’s frustrating that we don’t get more coverage, but Dems never do. My husband and I went, with my sister and her husband & daughter, brother & his girlfriend, to the DC March. This trip was for a late Christmas gathering, with the March as the cherry on top. Part of our going was an effort to motivate my brother’s girlfriend to vote in 2018. She is someone who has absorbed the “everything is fixed, no diff between the parties” idea. She didn’t vote in 2016 (neither did my Brother but he regrets it and is fully committed to voting in the mid-terms) and she doesn’t follow politics – she used to, but was discouraged during Bush years and stopped. She understands Trump is bad but thought HRC would have been just as bad (sigh). She was inspired by the march and by all the women who are running for different offices. We went to see The Post on Sunday, which was a nice underline to Trump’s efforts to demonize the press. By yesterday she was saying she was rethinking her views on voting and separately my brother told us he’ll be nudging her forward.
Every one of us needs to find people around us who don’t vote and get them activated. Marches and other resistance actions are as much for US as anything. The media always favors Repubs/Conservatives and will never give us enough credit. We need to be in contact with our Dem leaders, giving them support too, because THEY also see the media favoring the GOP and ignoring us. But being at the March was great because we saw so many other cool, smart people, united. And there were marchers all over the country and world.

@Betty Cracker: I do sense a growing divide between Republicans in the House and the Senate, with around four senators losing patience with the House tactics on this issue. That still won’t help get better legislation out of the House. There are very few House members who would provide any cover on this issue — people like Cathy McMorris-Rodgers and Martha McSally, because they aspire to be in the Senate, or people like Will Hurd and the South Florida delegation, whose electoral fate is probably tied to this issue, and then a few of the blue state Republicans who are trying to placate employer interests or who got their tax legislation and that’s all they really care about. It’s probably enough of a margin to pass legislation, but it’s not enough to strong arm the House. Ryan is the key.

Last year I got sick just in time to miss the march. I went to the DC march this year, the energy was great. I was very glad to see that my 7 year old granddaughter went with her mother to the Philly march.
@guachi: “DC movie that doesn’t suck” isn’t an Oscar category.
My feelings were pretty much the same. I thought the movie did actually have some interesting plot twists, but it still is just a comic book on the big screen. And at the end I wondered why if she was able to help end WW1, where was she during WW2?

It really is astonishing but not surprising that last weekend’s was not covered by msm. Rebecca Traister was on Chris Hayes last night. Interesting segment. Traister said she was not aware of the planned marches until early January and made a comparison between media coverage of tea party surge a few years ago. Not sure if it was Traister or Hayes that said media was faithfully there at every townhall or other event when tea party supporters showed up even if it was only ten people. What a blatant contrast not covering hundreds of thousands marching last weekend who were not only marching but registering people to vote and the large number of women planning to run for office.

McConnell weaseling out on this was expected. The point wasn’t even to get him on record. The point was to free the CHIP hostages, then force McConnell to go right back to another round of negotiations in less than three weeks. He has to do this again with a much weaker hand.
This deal was a big step towards fixing the DACA problem, not because of some vote everybody knew McConnell wouldn’t hold. It’s a step towards fixing DACA because it takes away McConnell’s biggest weapon in the fight.
EDIT – Very seriously, if this were the end of the process, McConnell would have scraped a win. But it’s not. It’s barely a pause in the fight, and we hurt them badly and came away clean.

You could have fooled me. I regularly posted a few weeks ago: “Why don’t they get CHIP this time and something else on the list( ACA CSR’s, Hurricane relief, DACA) next shutdown?”

@Frankensteinbeck: Given Schumer’s most recent comment on this process–that if McConnell broke his word on the DACA vote, he wasn’t just breaking his word to Democratic senators, but to those in his own party–I wonder if part of the behind the scenes scheming is a threat to McConnell’s status as Majority Leader, to be replaced by a Republican with less of a scorched earth approach to business.
Suzanne
@Frankensteinbeck: I don’t follow that logic. McConnell will hold the vote. It’s the House that won’t. So the Senate votes, and even if it passes, it’s DOA at the House. McConnell lives up to his promise, so the government doesn’t shut down, and we still get nothing for the Dreamers. So how is this advancing the goals of the Dreamers? It makes the House look bad? Too late.
Frankensteinbeck
@Suzanne:
Because we’re going to be having this same debate again before February 8th, and this time McConnell can’t go ‘You have to choose CHIP or DACA.’ We wanted two big things, and we got one, and McConnell got less than three weeks. When we go back to this negotiation, again, almost immediately, we still get to hold out for DACA and McConnell has lost the hostage he was threatening us with. The promised vote would have been great, but I doubt seriously anybody expected it.

@a thousand flouncing lurkers (was fidelio):

@Suzanne: Ma’am. 9 million sick children have health care. DACA affects nearly a million. It’s not fantastic they’re still waiting for a solution, but let me tell you a secret. You have nazis in control of your government. They don’t want a solution. They’d prefer to destroy everything, which is why they were willing to hold American kids hostage. Look at PR. Look at even less mentioned USVI. The republicans don’t want a real deal, at least not the ones with control of the racist puppet in chief. You weren’t going to win anything good on DACA without a serious fight. But removing the most vulnerable hostages from the line of fire was a good, strong move and the fact they need our reps to get the funding – which our side just pulled – means we are in a more powerful position.
Another Scott
@Suzanne: It’s not clear that the Senate is going to vote before the CR ends.
From the Congressional Record for yesterday, McConnell talking:
(Emphasis added.)
He’s basically saying that there can’t be the threat of another shutdown on February 8 or the DACA kids get it.
It’s not clear how much leverage that leaves TeamD, but Schumer understands this point of McConnell’s very well.
tl;dr – It’s not clear that the Senate is going to pass a DACA bill or anything else that Democrats care about, and McConnell says the Senate won’t do it if the Democrats threaten another shutdown on February 8. It sucks to be in the minority, but this is what happens when a pathological party has the majority in the legislature.
I agree with you about the House. Ryan and Goodlatte and all the rest have no interest in a DACA bill. President
MillerDonnie doesn’t either. We’ll see what happens, while keeping our fight up for November….
