The idea that the huge death toll on Puerto Rico is "really no one's fault" rather than an urgent question for Congress to investigate through oversight is the perfect encapsulation of @SpeakerRyan utter abandonment of oversight role & any effort to hold Trump accountable https://t.co/AyndrkWuxi
— Ronald Brownstein (@RonBrownstein) September 13, 2018
Of course the Zombie-Eyed Granny Starver don’t care — he’s out the door already — but let’s keep reminding those “low info voters” that EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN would just as soon see them dead, as long as it didn’t interfere with the GOP crime spree going so well right now…
It would be interesting if there were, say, a Select Committee that gathered evidence to evaluate the thesis that 3,000 dead is "just what happened" https://t.co/pBPGtQsVfS

Spoke to more than a dozen House Rs here at the Capitol. Very few had any criticism of the president's handling of the coming storm or his tweets on P.R. Most offered hearty praise. A revealing snapshot of the GOP.

Reminder: after Katrina, Congress held NINE hearings to investigate the federal response and assess what went wrong.
With 3,000 dead in Puerto Rico from Maria, how many hearings have Republicans in Congress held? ZERO.

Bossert was there when the Trump admin was responding to Maria. https://t.co/PhzP7ho8VQ

You know Trump's Puerto Rico conspiracy comments reached a new level when top 2 FL defenders, Gov. Rick Scott & Ron DeSantis, (mildly) rebuked the remarks.
DeSantis "doesn't believe any loss of life has been inflated"
Scott: "I disagree with @POTUS"https://t.co/Jkv25hulH1

Hillary said this to me last year. She was correct. https://t.co/ic79B6r6iV
— Zerlina Maxwell (@ZerlinaMaxwell) September 13, 2018
At some point, probably not today cuz she's also a coward, Sarah Huckabee Sanders will read a list of reverse-engineered BS reasons of why 3000 Americans didn't die from profound neglect in Puerto Rico. And she'll do it in the aggrieved monotone of a Carl's Jr customer complaint.
— zeddy (@Zeddary) September 13, 2018
If the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico had been named Hillary:
– Trump would swear the death toll was 7 billion people
– Congress would have subpoenaed wind, rain, the Atlantic Ocean and Hillary Clinton by now

I’ll just say what I just said, which is there is no reason to dispute these numbers. This is a devastating riot that hit an isolated embassy in Libya. And that’s really no one’s fault. It’s just what happened.
Litlebritdifrnt
Been following Florence coverage on Twitter since 4:30am my time. 185K people without power in NC. 200 people already rescued in New Bern. 150 awaiting rescue. People stuck in attics and on roofs. 22 + inches of rain recorded in Atlantic Beach. Storm moving at 6mph and has basically stalled. Eyewall just approaching Wilmington, NC as we speak.

@NotMax

@Litlebritdifrnt
High tide, about seven hours from now, is a-gonna be epic.
Quinerly
@Litlebritdifrnt: New Bern looks to be practically destroyed. Middle Street has never flooded. It’s underwater. The videos taken at Oriental are terrible.
Joey Maloney
@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??: You’re breaking my heart.
Litlebritdifrnt
@Quinerly: @NotMax: Agree to both. The problem is going to be the duration of the storm. Read a report that says the Lumbee River in Columbus County is not going to crest until Tuesday at levels higher than Hurricane Matthew which absolutely devastated the county when that happened. No idea how bad it is going to get this time. This is not going to be a quick disaster, it is going to go on for days. Also the storm is only moving at 6mph. For all intents and purposes it has stalled.
rikyrah
@Litlebritdifrnt:
Scared that it would stall. Just dumping all that rain??

@sm*t cl*de: I’ll just say what I just said, which is there is no reason to dispute these numbers. This was a devastating pair of jet planes that hit 2 isolated towers in NYC. And that’s really no one’s fault. It’s just what happened.
JPL
Was New Bern under evacuation orders?
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@JPL: Yes
JPL
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: Thanks. Not everyone has the means to evacuate, and for those trapped in their attics, I hope they are rescued soon.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@JPL: I have reason to be familiar with Carteret County’s stormwater handling system and their disaster plan, at least up to about ten years ago. Quinerly said above that Middle Street never floods; there’s a reason for that. You will not find a group of politicians more dedicated to handling the threat of too much water.
This is … unanticipated, even for the professionals.
Quinerly
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: New Bern is in Craven County. There is also a Middle Street in Beaufort, NC. Weather Channel was interviewing a restaurant owner (over the phone) in New Bern.
Quinerly
@Litlebritdifrnt: This looks to be more like Floyd when that storm just sat and churned water for days. I actually road out Matthew at Pine Knoll Shores 2 years ago. Only lost power on Bogue Banks for a few hrs after the sun came out the next day. Severe flooding an hr inland in Craven and Pitt counties around Vanceboro and the town I grew up in, Grifton. That also was the flood pattern with Floyd, as I recall.
Quinerly
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: do we know that for sure? I haven’t seen confirmation. Just out of state people that know nothing about the area ranting on Twitter and blaming people they don’t know. I guess I should seriously Google. ?
Quinerly
@Quinerly: OK, finally Googled.. all of Craven County under evacuation orders. Order came after Carteret County’s order. Sorry for any confusion.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Quinerly: Duh. Sorry, that was pre-caffeine. No idea why Carteret was on my mind.
Company I worked for back then had a second office in New Bern. Senior engineer with them retired to there and interfaced with the local government for us.
I’ll grant I’m mostly familiar with the town through their stormwater plans….
I was telling people earlier this week, as the forward speed reduced and it started to spread out, that this would be another Floyd.
Quinerly
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: It’s Floyd all over. Going to sit for days.
This is very bad. Those hog farms… I remember that.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Quinerly: I did link. And that gives me even less excuse for the county confusion; WITN clearly says Craven.
Need moar caffeine. Maybe an IV drip would suffice.
Quinerly
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: hang in there. Pine Knoll Shores Police Department just posted on their FB site, “It’s bad.”
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Quinerly: Oh, I’m in Raleigh and just waking up and catching up.
I’m part of the “sleeps through the hurricane” cohort.
Our share of this will come as part of the recovery, especially the emergency replacement of washed-out culverts. There’s gonna be more of that than we anticipated.
AM in NC
@Quinerly: Floyd was awful. I was at the UNC school of Pharmacy at the time, and it was all hands on deck (faculty, students, staff) collecting, examining, and shipping out donated unexpired medications to ship Down East because pharmacies were inundated and people were without medication for weeks.
Florence’s 6 mph speed explains why we still have gotten basically nothing here in the Triangle so far. Except no school for the kiddos yesterday and today (grumble, grumble).
azlib
And the cleanup and repair will be more expensive due to Trump’s tariffs.
Evil_Paul
It seems to me that Trump’s tweets plus the (non) reaction of Congress settles it: Puerto Rico needs Statehood.
No taxation without representation. I seem to recall some guys sayin’ that back in the day.
gratuitous
“I haven’t read the tweet, so I can’t comment.” This isn’t the Warren Commission Report, you fuckers, it’s 280 goddam characters! What a weak excuse, and even weaker that the media let this bullshit slip by.
Uncle Cosmo
And if anyone should slip that factoid into his thickwalled, vacuous skull, he would immediately have one of his hirelings prepare an Executive Order stripping them of their citizenship. (“Puerto Rico! You’re fired!) (“I like islands that don’t get in the way of hurricanes!”) Then explode in fury when told the Presidency lacks the power to do so.
Pray (if that’s something you do) for his continued ignorance.

@AM in NC: This is going to be worse than Floyd, I fear. Florence moving slower than a walk. Refrigerators spotted floating down at least one street in New Bern.
Quinerly
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: thanks for your posts. Be safe.

Meanwhile down in Florida, Rick Scott is apparently doing yeoman’s work gaslighting displaced Puerto Ricans about all the great things that Republicans have done for them.
