During the campaign Stone coached Trump to talk about the wall.
The main connection btwn Trump campaign & Wikileaks/Russian’s was Stone.

— Josh Greenman (@joshgreenman) January 25, 2019
Not quite Jimmy Breslin quality, but you mock Roger Stone with the NYC columnist you have…
… Having seen his old partner-in-crime Paul Manafort convicted after decades of graft and pillage, Stone is determined not to go gently into his coming time in the barrel. After all, a guy who’d been dunned out of country club Republican political work after being exposed by the Pulitzer-worthy National Enquirer as a racially obsessed sexual swinger and then reduced to scuffling for the likes of Al Sharpton and the woman who claimed to have been Eliot Spitzer’s madam before seeing his decades-long pipe dream of President Trump come true doesn’t have much to lose…
…[S]ome… ask why Stone had been so arrogant about leaving a paper trail.
But why wouldn’t he be? He’s been getting away with this stuff since he was a college kid working for Nixon and then revolutionizing Washington access as the Black, Manafort & Stone partnership cashed in on their campaign work for Ronald Reagan to sell political access to the world’s worst people, including genocidal dictators and a certain third-base-born New York real estate developer.
While Stone or someone with the keys to his accounts was posting “Who Framed Roger Stone” memes just after his arrest, Manafort was back in court in Virginia, suddenly appearing old and feeble like many a flashy creep with a good lawyer does in public once the jig appears to be up…“This is criminalizing political activity,” Stone told racist conspiracist Alex Jones Friday in a call-in interrupted by ads for snake oil plus one for his defense fund, in which Stone looked directly into the camera to warn: “If they get Roger Stone, you may be next.”
I’ll take my chances.
Seeing more of the "they are being arrested for lying, not for X crime" line. One, it's a start. Two, why lie about so many things if they weren't crimes? They lied because they knew the truth would get them in deep shit—and it probably still will.
— Mig Greengard (@chessninja) January 25, 2019
As if Flynn got indicted for lying about the weather. Nah, fuck that guy, and Stone, and this entire mob of treasonous grifters. Lying is the foundation of everything they do, so it's poetic justice as well as actual justice.
— Mig Greengard (@chessninja) January 25, 2019
Just a reminder: Stone's plot wouldn't have worked without idiotic journalists tweeting the Russia-coordinated leaks in real time. Ethically, they're unindicted co-conspirators. Never forget that moment in American journalism.

James E Powell
I have a question only slightly related to Stone, but this is, after all, an open thread.
How come the press/media have not given any of Trump’s scandals a -gate suffix? Maybe there is one and I missed it, but he’s got six or seven really huge ones each of which would be blanket 24/7 coverage if it were any Democrat. How come no -gates?
PaulWartenberg

PaulWartenberg
@James E Powell:
well, there’s been attempts to call it “Russia-Gate” but there has been a noticeable lack of media zeal to treat this as a DEFCON-1 level scandal.
Cheryl Rofer
@James E Powell: Because we are all tired to death of -gate being used that way?
Or possibly because the media are not taking them seriously.
Avalune

@James E Powell: That’s out of date. We need now to know which of these scandals is Trump’s Katrina.
(Alll of them, Katie. Because of course. )
Adam L Silverman
For almost 40 years no one at the Nixon Foundation felt the need to call out Stone, to declare to the world he really never had much of anything to do with Nixon’s two successful campaigns for president or with Nixon’s presidency. But now they feel the need to distance themselves.

I’ve never been a fan of the -gate suffix as shorthand for scandal, just from an English language point of view. But, how about Stupidgate, Polygate.
He has branded his name, so Trump itself signifies whatever he becomes. I hope his descendents have to change their names.

Yarrow
Yep. And some of them will also be indicted co-conspirators. Traitors will pay.
@James E Powell: The -gate suffix minimizes it. So many dumb things have been given the -gate suffix. A larger scandal like Iran-Contra didn’t get the -gate suffix. It had its own name. This episode of treason involving a large portion of one of our major political parties, some of our lesser parties, the media, supposed non-profit or charitable organizations like the NRA and evangelical organizations, among others, needs its own name.

I am still bummed that this traitorous thug was out in a jiffy and is being arrogant self in the public eye again. Given all the midnight FBI drama, I thought the fucker would be locked up for a long, long time, if not for life.

Suzanne
@Avalune: I like “stupid Watergate”, because it emphasizes the stupid part. The “-gate” suffix is lazy AF. These people are morans and they deserve to be shamed for being dumber than a bagful of hammers.
Ann Coulter accidentally hit on something important this week about Trump “convincing people with lowbrow taste to give him their money”. We (as a society, not Balloon Juice people) are not good at talking about social class and its implications, but I think she hit the nail on the head here. Having lowbrow taste isn’t really correlated with wealth, as there are plenty of rich people with lowbrow taste. And most of us like some stuff considered lowbrow. But I wonder if this is a subculture that I didn’t really think of as a distinct group before. And I wonder if the Trumpy cling so hard to Trump because he represents them. Just thoughts I had over hummus this evening.

@Anne Laurie: There’s are two reasons the FBI did a before dawn raid facilitated by their tactical squad. The first was to make sure Stone didn’t destroy any evidence. The second is because Stone has a Florida concealed weapons license (CWL), is known to have a firearms collection, has posted pictures on social media of himself with guns, and has been loudly claiming he hates the FBI and thinks they’re all criminals for months. Stone is also an obvious human growth hormone and steroid taker. While properly prescribed and monitored testosterone doesn’t turn the average man with a subclinical testosterone level into a roid raging madman, it just brings their levels back into the normal zone, given that Stone is also clearly taking HGH from the shape of his face and head, and Deity knows what else, is armed, and is inflammatory, I think it is a safe bet that he will eventually do something even more stupid than he’s already done and, at that point, Mueller will pick him up, slap a superseding indictment on him, and have his bail revoked.
JR

As for transamorous, if I’m remembering the literature correctly from when I had to poke around in it for professional reasons, this is one of the most common paraphilias.

The Super Bowl is played with a pig skin. That is traife.
but is probably the least offensive thing about the annual celebration of brutality, money, and brain damage.
I have to say, though, that Prince doing Purple Rain in the fucking rain nearly redeemed the entire enterprise.

George W. Romney was no slouch when it came to piling up lucre to pass along to his offspring.
And yet, compared to today’s Republicans, he seems like a tower of integrity and statesmanship.

Aside: I’ve been on that flight. So long in the air you get two free meals. One hot, one not.

@NotMax: I saw that the other day.

@Sebastian: Gay. Apparently someone was running the video camera in the conference room during a dispute with his wife and one of the other ministers in his ministry and it all came out, so to speak.
Sister Golden Bear
@Adam L Silverman: It’s one of the biggest subgenres of pron.
Albeit most of it features actresses who are extremely feminine and closely fit cis-het beauty norms — albeit with one one major exception. (Chasers usually quickly lose interest once they find out someone is post-SRS — almost universally they want to be the penetrated partner.)

@joel hanes: I haven’t watched a football game in years. The last Super Bowl party I went to was at one of my students when I was assigned at USAWC. I think I hung out in the kitchen. Football bores me. I think the league, from the owners to the league officials, is, at best, a really vile monopolistic enterprise. I watch ice hockey, basketball, rugby, and baseball.

@Sister Golden Bear: I’ll update the files in case I have to ever do another memo on paraphilias for someone in the Army. Don’t ask, but basically in the attempt to start making a dent on the sexual harassment, assault, and rape problems a number of years ago, some former FBI agent whose daughter was raped and killed and turned himself, in retirement, into a self taught expert on sexual deviancy, started getting handed off from general officer to general officer as a speaker on sexual harassment and assault. That wasn’t what he actually presented on. So I had to write a memo explaining why he was wrong and I made sure to reference the research literature to drive the point home that he didn’t actually talk about anything close to the actual problems we’re concerned with, he isn’t actually qualified to talk about what he did talk about, and what he did talk about was factually inaccurate. The absolute number of abject frauds who manage to worm their way into consulting/working for the military because they have a legit credential or claim to have a legit credential is frightening. And I’ve been fighting these asshats for far too long.

@NotMax: Can’t figure out how to copy and paste on this phone, but the last couple of paragraphs in the article you linked are pretty awful. Almost all of the billionaires, banksters, and government officials attending Davos said the Khashoggi murder is old news and they are back to business as usual with the Saudis.

I’m sure.
FWIW, there’s plenty of them doing work in the LGBT field as well — usually to portray us as deviants. As well as well-meaning, but utterly clueless researchers, such as the ones promoting the idea that one-fifth of all trans women are HIV positive — never mind they based that stat based on studies recruiting trans sex workers at urban health clinics. I’m not bitter… actually I’m just pissed off.

I was idly Googling around to try and figure out what the objections to Bohemian Rhapsody were now that I’ve seen it, and I’m realizing that subtlety is COMPLETELY lost on most people these days. Sheesh.
I mean, really, when they show Mercury on a payphone with his girlfriend while exchanging glances with a trucker who then saunters into a nearby restroom, some people didn’t understand what was about to happen off-screen? Really?
It looks like a whole lot of young people never read And the Band Played On and misunderstood a huge amount of context. Sheesh.

@Sister Golden Bear:
Now you have me wondering how old those studies are, because I have a vague memory of hearing that AIDS was a problem in the early 90s in very specific urban social groups of transwomen living in or near poverty who had a hard time affording hormones (which were not covered by insurance or Medicaid) so they sometimes pooled what they had and shared needles before the message really got out that sharing any needles (not just heroin) was dangerous.
But it’s late at night and my Google-fu is failing me, so maybe my brain made it up.

@Mnemosyne: I’ve seen that written here and there, but I’ve never been clear on how much of that was documented and how much was anecdotal. I actually used to be a nurse whose main practice was in HIV care and transgender health services, so you’d think I’d have read the literature, but practically speaking you’re going to tell people not to share needles anyway no matter what the exact statistics are. Sharing needles for intramuscular as opposed to intravenous use would theoretically be a somewhat lower risk of HIV transmission; I’m not sure that it’s been quantified well.

@James E Powell: Maybe the great gate of Kyiv?

@Hob:
Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that healthcare workers weren’t trying to inform their patients about the dangers of re-using needles. More like, as often happens, patients may have heard what they wanted to hear or decided that going without the hormones they needed was worse than the potential risks.
I was more trying to say that even if that subgroup of transgender women had higher rates of contracting AIDS, it wasn’t necessarily because they were sex workers themselves.

@James E Powell: Because of “Gamergate”, for younger generations “-gate” now refers to a fake outrage touted by fascist creeps trying to drive women and minorities out of nerd culture. There are variants like “Comicsgate”. Using it for an actual political scandal no longer seems right.

@Yarrow: Back in the depths of the BOGOD (Bad Old Good Old Days) the Rooskies would identify this sort of mess by stapling the -shchina suffix onto the chief perpetrator’s name, e.g., Yezhovshchina:
IMO this is a useful way forward. If we were blogging in po-russki I’d suggest something on the order of Izmenashchina (“treason times”), but since we’re not, how about Shitgibbonshchina or Twitlershchina or even Drumpfshchina?
