Apparently this slip past everyone that was asked to put up a 14 August Seattle Meet Up post. I apologize to HinTN, OpieJeanne, and the other folks interested.
HinTN is going to be in Seattle this week and would like to arrange a now, because we here at Ballon Juice Actual dropped the ball, last minute meet up for tomorrow night. So if you’re interested, please sound off in the comments and start working out where you want to connect.
I’ve emailed both HinTN and OpieJeanne to apologize for dropping the ball and to make sure they know I’m putting this up now. I’ll also repost tonight in the hope that you all out in Seattle can still pull this off despite my screwing it up.
Open thread!

Unfortunately, I’ll be at work until 6:00 PM. If the meetup is held late-ish, and/or in the north end, I am likelier to be able to make it.
So sorry~
H.E.Wolf
Adam, thank you for posting the invitation. HinTN, and all the local folks, I’m so sorry to miss you all. I’m on the road this week. HinTN, I hope you have a fabulous time in the Northwest!
chopper
where we talkin’? i’m busier’n a dog with four balls this week but if it’s on the north side i could probably make it work.
HinTN
We’re staying right downtown but can take Lyft anywhere reasonable. We’re arriving tonight on the Victoria ferry at 1945 and we’ve got to be at SEA by 0800 Thursday. We’ve had a fabulous 16 days in BC. It would be fun to connect IRL with some local jackals but be advised these geezers is wore plumb out. ?
HinTN
@CaseyL: What do y’all mean by the “north end”?
Mr. Mack
Is this ever going to happen in Nashville? Even if it’s the trolls, I’ll take it!
HinTN
@Mr. Mack: That’s a lot closer to home than Seattle!
Cas
@HinTN: North of Greenwood. I live near Northgate Mall and work in Lynnwood. So: Greenwood, Maple Leaf, Shoreline, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Loyal Heights, anywhere in that area.
Lots of terrific places to eat and drink. BJ Meetups in the past have been at Elliott Bay Brewery on Lake City Way, Maples in Roosevelt (that was an informal one, just me and Yutsano, but I can vouch for the food), Indo Cafe on 137th & Aurora. There’s also Stanfords at Northgate Mall and Saffron Grill about one block from me.
Not much up in the Lynnwood area, though some nice places in Edmonds, which is west of Lynnwood.

(watches other meet up parties with envy)
HinTN
@CaseyL: The food at The Maple looks interesting.
CaseyL
HinTN, please let me know if “reasonable by Lyft” goes that far north, and I’ll suggest some meetup spots.
I left out the Watershed Tavern, also very near Northgate Mall, which has terrific pizza. There’s also a Thai Fusion bistro which is excellent in the same shopping area.
thalarctosMaritimus
I’ll be coming south from Marysville. I definitely prefer north!
Saffron Grill is a favorite with mr. thalarctosMaritimus and me, and I recommend it.
Yutsano
@CaseyL: Way too last minute for me to join, but there’s quite a few good eateries up around Northgate mall. That shouldn’t be too bad of a Lyft ride I would think.
Mary G
Adam, I’m afraid we’ll have to dock your pay for this mistake. Seattle Juicers are so sociable.
chopper
@HinTN:
the maple is just up the road from me.
opiejeanne
We’re on the east side, in Woodinville, so will let you guys pick a place. Hopefully on the northern side.
Adam L Silverman
@Mary G: I’m not sure you can really deduct anything from zero, but you go right ahead and try.
HinTN
I have confirmed that Lyft will take me from downtown to the Saffron Grill, which means any of these north side juke joints will be fine. Quoting Pink Floyd, “You pick the place …” Is 1830 a reasonable time?
opiejeanne
@HinTN: OOh! Saffron Grill looks good. Never been there, but still, we are able to get almost anywhere so other people with time/distance restrictions should do the choosing with you.
I really liked Indo Cafe when we met there. We thought we were in the wrong place at first because it is hard to spot. The food was good.
I’m going to go pester MikeJ
CaseyL
So far the votes are in favor of The Maple or Saffron Grill.
Saffron Grill is a little roomier, and more conducive to chat for a larger group.
1830 works just fine for me, at either venue. I don’t have green balloons, but I do have a lot of red hair :)
opiejeanne
@CaseyL:
I know you! I also know Thalarctos Maritimus. And I have a lot of white hair.
Steve in the ATL
On a related note, I have a free evening next Thursday, August 22, in Kent, Ohio. Who’s lucky enough to live around there?
Steve in Hurricane Alley, TX
Dan B
I’m coming from the southend so rush hour… I’ll leave the house at noon… Time to look up Saffron.
We’re putting down our 19 year old fluffy kitten tonight so may be a bit out of it at times on Wednesday.
gwangung
Well, crap, this looked to be in my neighborhood, but I’m busy as hell with a video shoot….
Dan B
Since I’m coming from the southend it’s not too far out of my way to swing by and pick up HinTN and spouse. If I can figure out where they are staying.
dollared
@HinTN: The Saffron Grill is yummy but at the Maple I could bring my dog….but really either one works for me. BTW there is an express bus from downtown to Northgate at that time so if you’re up for a 10 minute walk you could save the Lyft, at least one way.
CaseyL
How many of us will be there? A guesstimate is fine. (I’ll call to see if larger parties need a reservation.)
thalarctosMaritimus
@Dan B: I’m so sorry, Dan. It’s really hard to do the right things for our companions sometimes.
thalarctosMaritimus
@CaseyL: I’m in as me + 1.
HinTN
@CaseyL:
I was once blonde. These days, I’m with opiejeanne and have a 186 cm high crop of white thatch.
HinTN
@Dan B: We’re at The Arctic Club (DoubleTree) at 700 3rd Ave. Let’s play the ride by ear tomorrow. Adam can get my contact info to you.
HinTN
@CaseyL: Having stirred this up, I’m in. We’ll have to see how Mrs H feels about it when the time comes. Tentatively two of us.
CaseyL
@Dan B: Oh, I am so sorry. 19 is a hella good long life, though. We’d be delighted to raise a glass to your kitty.
TomatoQueen
@Dan B: 19 for a fluffy kitten is a good long life & I wish for a peaceful walk across the Bridge.
opiejeanne
@HinTN: I am approaching haircut time so I’m starting to get Bernie hair. ?
opiejeanne
There are two of us. after 50 years we’re sort of a package deal
thalarctosMaritimus
@CaseyL: May I request a glass be raised to our Marvin and Spencer as well? Thank you.
They were both old, and sick, so it’s not too surprising that they both left us this year, but within 2 months of each other was a real blow.
Sab
@Steve in the ATL: I live in Akron, which is about 20 minutes away. I believe Manyakitty lives nearby.
CaseyL
@thalarctosMaritimus: Absolutely! We will remember and toast all of our departed.
CaseyL
I have made a reservation at Saffron Grill for 8 people, for 6:30. It’s under my name, Casey.
ETA: My bad – looks like it might be 9 people. I’ll call and up the number.
HinTN
@CaseyL: Excellent! Thank you for taking the lead on this. I look forward to meeting all y’all Left Coast folks.
Dan B
@TomatoQueen: Thanks. He’s been the best cat ever – talkative, sociable, crazy cute. I put him in bed last night and cuddled for a couple hours. When he got up -two tries – he groaned. He’s been sleeping outside at the neighbors and in the road!
Dan B
@Sab: I was born in Akron. My father’s parents knew the Seiberlings. They stayed at Stan Hywet. My grandmother sang for their Tuesday Musical Club. The Seiberlings offered the apartment over the garage (former stables / carriage house) to my parents when my brother and I were little. My mother didn’t want us to grow up around the super wealthy.
Dan B
@Sab: My brother’s former girlfriend was at Kent State and witnessed the National Guard shooting.
opiejeanne
Testing. New computer.
opiejeanne
@Dan B: That’s a terrible memory. Young men at my college stopped going home after that shooting, after arguments with their fathers about whether they had it coming.
Sab
@Dan B: John Lithgow’s family lived in the carriage house when he was in high school.
The first campaign I ever worked on was John Seiberling’s. I was maybe 16. He ran as an anti-war candidate, but he was basically an environmentalist. He’s why we have Cuyahoga Valley National Park instead of solid housing developments from here to Cleveland. Born into a Republican management family and a corporate lawyer until he was 50, he was always to the left of where Elizabeth Warren is now.
In addition to Tuesday Musical, his grandmother also helped start Alcoholics Anonymous.
Dan B
@Sab: My mother loved John Seiberling. (As a politician.) My father got a job with Seiberling Rubber as a chemist. He was there until 1960 when they opened a union free plant in Arkansas. He quit to get us out of that Jim Crow cesspool. The company had been taken over by a corporate raider so it was not a career future anyway.
Bonnie
Alas, North Seattle is way too far for a South Tacoman to get to. It’s probably easier for me to get to Portland, Oregon, than up to North Seattle. I had fun during one meet up; but, it seemed to be a fluke to be so far south in Seattle, which made it closer to Tacoma. Hope you all have a good time. Send some Balloon Juice vibes down to Tacoma; maybe my cat and I will catch them.
CaseyL
@Bonnie: I’m sorry you won’t ne joining us! It really is difficult planning for a jackalariat territory that spans 100 miles top to bottom and 50 miles west to east.
Might there may be enough south Sound dwelling jackals to do a Pierce County meetup?
Jonathan Holbert
I live in Bellingham and get off at 5 pm tomorrow. Do you think I could join? What time?
thalarctosMaritimus
@Jonathan Holbert: Whatcom represent! Snohomish is already there.
You’d be very welcome to join us. 6:30 at the Saffron Grill in Northgate.
CaseyL
@Jonathan Holbert: I upped the reservation to “9-11 people,” so we’re good to go!
EthylEster
@dollared: and the 41 runs very frequently from downtown to northgate. I’ve wanted to check out Saffron for a while so maybe I will show up.
opiejeanne
@CaseyL: Yay! It sounds like a party!
EthylEster
@CaseyL: can you squeeze me in? I just discovered this thread….
HinTN
@EthylEster: Guarantee that we will make room for you and any others.
CaseyL
I count 11 people coming, including the +1s. If there are more, we can make room :)
I’ve asked Adam to put up a Meetup Confirmation Thread, per his promise, but I don’t see one yet. If he does, we may get more attendees; also some lurkers might decide to join in the fun.
BeautifulPlumage
Hi to all of the jackals in the Pac NW and those traveling through I’ve so enjoyed meeting! Not sure if I can make it but will try.
My condolences for DanB and thalarctoseMaratimus for your recent losses.
thalarctosMaritimus
@BeautifulPlumage: <3 Thank you. I hope you're able to make it; we'd love to see you again.
