Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

T R E 4 5 O N

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans in disarray!

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Bark louder, little dog.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

August 14th Seattle Meet Up!!!!!

Apparently this slip past everyone that was asked to put up a 14 August Seattle Meet Up post. I apologize to HinTN, OpieJeanne, and the other folks interested.

HinTN is going to be in Seattle this week and would like to arrange a now, because we here at Ballon Juice Actual dropped the ball, last minute meet up for tomorrow night. So if you’re interested, please sound off in the comments and start working out where you want to connect.

I’ve emailed both HinTN and OpieJeanne to apologize for dropping the ball and to make sure they know I’m putting this up now. I’ll also repost tonight in the hope that you all out in Seattle can still pull this off despite my screwing it up.

Open thread!

Unfortunately, I’ll be at work until 6:00 PM. If the meetup is held late-ish, and/or in the north end, I am likelier to be able to make it.

    So sorry~

Adam, thank you for posting the invitation. HinTN, and all the local folks, I’m so sorry to miss you all. I’m on the road this week. HinTN, I hope you have a fabulous time in the Northwest!

We’re staying right downtown but can take Lyft anywhere reasonable. We’re arriving tonight on the Victoria ferry at 1945 and we’ve got to be at SEA by 0800 Thursday. We’ve had a fabulous 16 days in BC. It would be fun to connect IRL with some local jackals but be advised these geezers is wore plumb out. ?

@HinTN: North of Greenwood. I live near Northgate Mall and work in Lynnwood. So: Greenwood, Maple Leaf, Shoreline, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Loyal Heights, anywhere in that area.

Lots of terrific places to eat and drink. BJ Meetups in the past have been at Elliott Bay Brewery on Lake City Way, Maples in Roosevelt (that was an informal one, just me and Yutsano, but I can vouch for the food), Indo Cafe on 137th & Aurora. There’s also Stanfords at Northgate Mall and Saffron Grill about one block from me.

Not much up in the Lynnwood area, though some nice places in Edmonds, which is west of Lynnwood.

HinTN, please let me know if “reasonable by Lyft” goes that far north, and I’ll suggest some meetup spots.

I left out the Watershed Tavern, also very near Northgate Mall, which has terrific pizza. There’s also a Thai Fusion bistro which is excellent in the same shopping area.

I’ll be coming south from Marysville. I definitely prefer north!

Saffron Grill is a favorite with mr. thalarctosMaritimus and me, and I recommend it.

@CaseyL: Way too last minute for me to join, but there’s quite a few good eateries up around Northgate mall. That shouldn’t be too bad of a Lyft ride I would think.

I have confirmed that Lyft will take me from downtown to the Saffron Grill, which means any of these north side juke joints will be fine. Quoting Pink Floyd, “You pick the place …” Is 1830 a reasonable time?

    August 13, 2019 at 1:27 pm

@HinTN: OOh! Saffron Grill looks good. Never been there, but still, we are able to get almost anywhere so other people with time/distance restrictions should do the choosing with you.

I really liked Indo Cafe when we met there. We thought we were in the wrong place at first because it is hard to spot. The food was good.

So far the votes are in favor of The Maple or Saffron Grill.

Saffron Grill is a little roomier, and more conducive to chat for a larger group.

1830 works just fine for me, at either venue. I don’t have green balloons, but I do have a lot of red hair :)

@HinTN: The Saffron Grill is yummy but at the Maple I could bring my dog….but really either one works for me. BTW there is an express bus from downtown to Northgate at that time so if you’re up for a 10 minute walk you could save the Lyft, at least one way.

@TomatoQueen: Thanks. He’s been the best cat ever – talkative, sociable, crazy cute. I put him in bed last night and cuddled for a couple hours. When he got up -two tries – he groaned. He’s been sleeping outside at the neighbors and in the road!

    Dan B

    August 13, 2019 at 4:25 pm

@Sab: I was born in Akron. My father’s parents knew the Seiberlings. They stayed at Stan Hywet. My grandmother sang for their Tuesday Musical Club. The Seiberlings offered the apartment over the garage (former stables / carriage house) to my parents when my brother and I were little. My mother didn’t want us to grow up around the super wealthy.

  48. 48.

    Sab

    August 13, 2019 at 5:20 pm

@Dan B: John Lithgow’s family lived in the carriage house when he was in high school.

The first campaign I ever worked on was John Seiberling’s. I was maybe 16. He ran as an anti-war candidate, but he was basically an environmentalist. He’s why we have Cuyahoga Valley National Park instead of solid housing developments from here to Cleveland. Born into a Republican management family and a corporate lawyer until he was 50, he was always to the left of where Elizabeth Warren is now.

In addition to Tuesday Musical, his grandmother also helped start Alcoholics Anonymous.

  49. 49.

    Dan B

    August 13, 2019 at 5:30 pm

@Sab: My mother loved John Seiberling. (As a politician.) My father got a job with Seiberling Rubber as a chemist. He was there until 1960 when they opened a union free plant in Arkansas. He quit to get us out of that Jim Crow cesspool. The company had been taken over by a corporate raider so it was not a career future anyway.

Alas, North Seattle is way too far for a South Tacoman to get to. It’s probably easier for me to get to Portland, Oregon, than up to North Seattle. I had fun during one meet up; but, it seemed to be a fluke to be so far south in Seattle, which made it closer to Tacoma. Hope you all have a good time. Send some Balloon Juice vibes down to Tacoma; maybe my cat and I will catch them.

@Bonnie: I’m sorry you won’t ne joining us! It really is difficult planning for a jackalariat territory that spans 100 miles top to bottom and 50 miles west to east.

Might there may be enough south Sound dwelling jackals to do a Pierce County meetup?
