Even though it meant not live-tweeting during the DNC’s Houston debate, where he was guaranteed a (considerably less flattering) large audience. Per the Washington Post:
… With the president speaking here Thursday to a closed-door retreat of House Republicans, scores of protesters gathered to express opposition to White House policies and outrage at Trump’s recent tweets calling Maryland’s largest city “the Worst in the USA.”
The visit by the president — who maligned Baltimore as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live” — was limited to a dinnertime speech kicking off the GOP retreat at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Harbor East.
House Republicans selected Baltimore as the location for their three-day conference long before the president’s attack on the city, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 10 to 1. Well before the White House announced that Trump would attend the conference, a coalition of advocacy groups calling themselves the Baltimore Welcoming Committee had planned days of rallies to protest GOP policies on immigration, climate change and other topics. There was to be a singalong, a light show and a dance party. Organizer Sharon Black said Trump’s scheduled appearance “upped the ante.”
“This is about the remarks about Baltimore and his policies. You can’t really separate the two,” she said…
Of course, Donny Dollhands goes nowhere without a few of his devoted sycophants…
Absolutely effing disgusting. House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy is once again spinning conspiracy theories about why his party lost the midterms, from @DanMartinTalks https://t.co/YAVbbYyzJQ

While Democrats debated policy, Trump gave a bizarre, dark speech to House Republicans in which he pushed fake tax cuts and made-up health care plans.

Meanwhile, Trump told Republicans tonight that “we will always protect patients with preexisting conditions.”
His DOJ is in court trying to undo the protections for people with pre-existing conditions in the ACA.

Trump’s remarks lasted 68 minutes, in a low energy speech, possibly because of the low energy audience. He alternated between reading from his teleprompters and ad-libbing, resulting in him frequently returning to topics he had already covered once or twice before…
This reads like a stream-of-consciousness poem from one of the Beats who got ostracized because he was using *too much* benzedrine. https://t.co/CHoHh2V4zW

Calouste
I’m surprised it was at a Marriott, not at a hotel owned by you know who.
FelonyGovt
Soshulism!!!

They’re so predictable with the password stuff. So dumb.
Saw Kavanaugh was trending on Twitter and went to have a look. So there;s at least one more sexual assault story and the FBI apparently covered it all up and/or didn’t investigate.Terrible stuff.
Anne Laurie
@Calouste:
The ‘Permanent Party’ members were no doubt hoping His Grifterness would refuse to spend ‘his’ (our) money at any hotel that he wasn’t taking a cut from.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Anne Laurie: IIRC, the junior Senator from Utah* is named after one of the Marriott’s founders.
* I think you may know this guy.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Yarrow:
that last part interests me, Kavanaugh knew it was coming. Which probably means trump, Barr, McConnell, etc all knew.
Mary G
@Yarrow: FTFNYT really shit the bed on that story – they’ve deleted two tweets and went with a third that said “we apologize.” They are infused in the rich white man bubble and need to add a public editor STAT.
Mary G
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: And we still don’t know who financed Kavanaugh’s $92,000 country club membership and multi-million dollar house, which he could not afford on his judge’s salary. He and Bob Barr should both be impeached.
Yarrow
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Kavanaugh knew it was true and the Republicans on the committee knew it was too. Remember the woman they brought in to question Kavanaugh at the hearing. She started asking him a question about the calendar and they called a break and she was gone. They knew she was asking him something that he shouldn’t be answering.
@Mary G: @Mary G: Yep, the NYT was terrible on this. Excellent reporting let down by some editor or someone who was in charge of the tweets.
As for the money, I think it’s probably money laundering of some sort. It should totally be investigated. It’s a travesty that someone with that sort of financial mystery in his background could get anywhere near being selected for the Supreme Court, let alone get through the process and get on the court.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Mary G: lots of interesting discussion on twitter about the weirdness of that article, presented on the op/ed pages

I knew I’d seen this the other day. If there’s any question Barr is up to his eyeballs in the Kavanaugh stuff…

No idea if it’s true, but common sense indicates he hasn’t always been celibate, although he may be now.
I can’t get my mind around McCarthy; he admitted Putin pays Trump but he seems fine with it. I always knew republicans were evil but I had no idea they were so unpatriotic.
Somebody needs to get working on a contingency plan for the day, coming soon, when republicans refuse en masse to leave office claiming the votes were hacked.
I wish someone in the media would point out the logical fallacy of claiming election malfeasance while actively agitating against election security, but apparently that’s too much to ask.

@hervevillechaizelounge:
Infuriating, ain’t it?

Trump is talking about a further tax cut on top of a $1 trillion deficit. From recent stories.
Democrats need to bash these “no tax and spend spend spend” Republicans.
Chris Johnson
@Mary G:
I’m gonna make a WILD GUESS and say ‘Russia’ and or ‘Putin’. Did I win?
NeenerNeener
So Trump claims he got Osama Bin Laden’s son? Obama is living in his head rent-free, isn’t he?
Butter Emails
@Chris Johnson:
Nah. I’m going to guess it’s just standard corruption. Rich Republican or Republicans supporting a favorite judge.

Why do these guys insist on repeating twitler’s slurs? Do we need to know everytime he calls Biden “Sleepy”? They all seem so eager to aid him in branding Democrats. I’m already sick of it.

I’m a fourth generation Baltimoreian and generally up for an anti-Trump protest but decided to go to my grandson’s soccer game instead. Maybe it’s just rationalization, but I’m thinking maybe just ignoring him (aside from working like hell to defeat him next year) is a good thing. Next time, I may show up with a sign that says, “Oh, I thought it was going to be Donny Osmond“!
Ohio Mom
Kudos to whoever is behind the Trump rat balloon. Very nicely done and on point.
