there is an 80% consensus trump is mentally unfit for office across the full spectrum of voters. if everyone started being blunt this fact would be more conventional. the only honest disagreement remaining is over whether to put up with it or not.

The thing this @politicoalex story about Bossie and Lewandowski at the WH underscores is how much the president spends time telling folks he misses the old 2016 days https://t.co/WPtXay3mj1
— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) May 27, 2020
Bossie’s an old-school, successful ratfvcker — which is why the #failsons and luzers in Trump’s permanent cortege hate him. Lewandowski’s a no-neck two-bit thug, which probably intimidates Jared and Stephen Miller, and it won’t surprise me when rumors leak out that he tried to throw hands on Parscale. Insert ‘Let them fight’ gif —
… Republicans involved with setting up the Thursday meeting with Trump’s state directors said they were taken aback by Bossie and Lewandowski’s warning. They felt the need to mollify Trump, who has been kept abreast of his reelection effort but hasn’t always been aware of the granular, on-the-ground details.
The sequence, which was described by four people familiar with what transpired, offered the latest snapshot of Trump’s angst about his battleground state standing. With just five months until the election, the president has been privately expressing concern about his poll numbers and senior Republicans are openly sounding alarms about his swing state prospects...
When the discussion turned to Arizona in the Thursday meeting, Trump and his political advisers expressed concern about GOP Sen. Martha McSally’s campaign to win the seat to which she was appointed in 2018. The president waved in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was there to meet with him on a separate matter, for the discussion.
Those present in the meeting also voiced worry about the prospects of another red state senator, Georgia Republican Kelly Loeffler. The senator had at the time been under federal investigation for stock trades, though the Department of Justice has since dropped the investigation.
Georgia, like Arizona, hasn’t been won by a Democratic presidential candidate in decades. But recent surveys have shown Trump on shaky ground, including one commissioned by the political team of GOP Gov. Brian Kemp that had the president running neck-and-neck with Biden.
On Tuesday, the campaign announced that it was promoting former White House political director Bill Stepien to deputy campaign manager. The move was described as an attempt to provide additional support to campaign manager Brad Parscale, though some in the White House viewed it as a check on Parscale…
Whisper: Mitch McConnell doesn’t care whether Trump wins in November. Mitch has his wife’s multimillions to fall back on, not to mention his own ties to Putin. Mitch would be just as happy to see a Democrat in the Oval Office next year, so he could go back to being ‘the (dis)loyal opposition…
I remember 2016. He absolutely loved holding court on Morning Joe (which happily let him.) They were the rare media figures he saw as equals. He only switched to Fox & Friends out of a bruised ego and he doesn't respect any of those chucklef***s.

Trump, screaming unmasked spittle over a whirling helicopter: 'well as you saw he likes me again now, he's a patriot. Some called him Cannibal Carl but all the tough guys love Trump. I love tough guys. Obama with his broken tests left the grocery stores empty. I re-opened Meat.'

Purely coincidental, I’m sure, that the right-wingers singled out for their death threats someone with a Jewish-sounding name. /s

mdblanche
I’m sure you’re right about that, but shouldn’t he at least care whether his Senate colleagues get reelected? He can do his disloyal opposition act from the minority if he has to, but wouldn’t he prefer to stay majority leader?
Anne Laurie
To tell the truth, I’m not entirely sure McConnell does care about being Majority Leader — he was very much in his element blocking President Obama, and he doesn’t need a leadership role to keep doing that under President Biden.
More importantly, as long as we can nuture Trump’s suspicion that McConnell is ‘disloyal’ (and McConnell’s contempt for Trump), does it matter what either one ‘really’ cares about?
HumboldtBlue

@mdblanche: Yertle cares about one thing and one thing only: Yertle. He should be fighting for his power here true but that doesn’t keep the bucks flowing in. Off topic facts of the day: 2.709 million Americans were deployed to Vietnam. 58,220 of them died. 1.746 million Americans have officially contracted Covid-19 so far. 102,107 of them are dead.

@Anne Laurie:
If he becomes Minority Leader Moscow Mitch, he’ll have a much tougher time doing that (I hope). Unless Majority Leader Durbin decides “in the spirit of comity,” to restore the filibuster, I would think Traitor Turtle’s fifth-column-ing will not be as effective.

There should be zero reason to bring comity and work with a party that holds every value in contempt. It will derail every thing Democrats would want to work towards. Instead focus on bringing everyone to book and who gives a shit about what the press and the opposite party think.
cain
@cain:
And Durbin as majority leader? I don’t think so.. the women have shown to be the real strength of the party. These men need to sit down and let the women drive – I’m hoping that ewarren/klobuchar will take the helm or Harris if she doesn’t get picked. I’m done with these men.

How is this, along with death threats, not a violation of twitter policy and cause for shutting down the account?

@cain: Any of them would be ok, but Warren is the only one of them who would kick McConnell’s ass all day every day. I’d love to see her as AG, but she’d be replaced in the senate by a republican, so I’d rather have her as majority leader and Harris as AG.

Predictions: (1) Roy Blunt (R-MO) will be the next Senate Minority Leader, because Amy McGrath beats McConnell, and M.J. Hegar beats Cornyn (R-TX). (2) Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will be next Majority Leader because the Senate Democratic Caucus decides he’ll do the best job of any of them.
SFAW
@cain:
Maj Leader is not the best slot for Warren nor Harris. Klobuchar, not sure. But it’s primarily an administrative and managerial role, not a “deep thinker” (meant in the best way, not as a pejorative) position. Why tie up AG Harris (FSM willing) or consumer/financial leader Warren in an administrative role?
Be that as it may, I’d prefer Durbin over Schumer. But if the only thing that matters to you is having a woman in the position, I think Yutsano’s suggestion of Patty Murray is probably the best one.
SFAW
@Baud:
Although my wishes pale next to yours — as well the Intertubez know — he’s been a disappointment. It almost as if he needs Speaker Pelosi to show him how it’s done.
Baud
@SFAW:
Pelosi >>>> Schumer, but I doubt the Senators think Schumer has been bad enough that he should be replaced, and it’s frankly an unknown whether his replacement would do a better job.
I don’t think the issue justifies the amount of digital ink that has been spilled on the topic.
I don’t really care, except for having a Majority Leader rather than a Minority Leader.
Geminid
I think Warren’s highest value will be drafting legislation. Her climate change/clean energy+conservation plan was outstanding, and I think it would be a good template for upcoming legislation. Maybe her policy people will sit down with U. Mass. economist Robert Pollin. His interview with Dan Droulette in The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists March 2019 is dynamite. It’s titled “We Need a Better Green New Deal.” The Bulletin is the outfit with the Doomsday Clock. They do a lot of reporting on climate change now.
SFAW
@Baud:
I don’t disagree. I was just expressing my hope(s). But, yeah, I think he’ll get the position, assuming we take back the Senate (FSM willing).
My meager knowledge/understanding tells me Durbin would, at least partly because I don’t think he has the blind spot (so to speak) re: the financial industry. Don’t know enough about Murray. I think having Warren do it would be a waste of her talents.
Seconded
Tenar Arha
@Sab:
dead thread, but HIPAA doesn’t apply here.
1) That law applies only to records held by healthcare providers, or insurance companies & adjacencies. You have to give permission to share that info. It definitely wasn’t intended to apply to contact tracing or it wouldn’t be legal. But again, the tracer doesn’t usually share your name with the next person in the chain, it’s you who shared their name as someone you had contact with.
2) And HIPAA is moot anyway. That fucker Sims was informed by the sick legislator(s), and Sims informed the Republicans but NOT the Dems. Literally excluded & endangered his colleagues by deliberately withholding important information that was shared with leadership to help everyone.
Suzy
@cain: I assume the majority leader would be Schumer.

If the Dems win the Senate, Schumer will be Majority Leader.
I’m a total Warren fanboy, but her skills are a total mismatch with those required of a leader of a Congressional caucus.
Warren for veep IF it means that she’s going to have a major role in Biden’s Administration. Otherwise, Warren for Fed Chair or Treasury Secretary. But Veep, Fed Chair, and Treasury Secretary are the only positions that Warren should even consider leaving the Senate for. If she gets any other offers, she should stay put.

Reminder; there are browser-based tools to disrupt the Facebook tracking. E.g.
They include these:
Chrome, Brave: Block Facebook (extension)
Firefox: Facebook Container (extension)
Facebook makes money tracking/profiling people and selling targeted ads., and this includes tracking non-Facebook users.
Don’t be an eyeball sold by Facebook!!!
Also consider other generic tracker blockers. EFF’s Privacy Badger is helpful and causes very little problems. (Zero so far for me for the past few years.)
